I hear you about downsizing. I had so much music gear before. Gave it all away and now I only have my iPad, a MIDI controller, an audio interface and a mic. And I've never had so much fun making music! It's just so fast and straightforward, I love it. Less is more.

When I first started producing, I needed a roomful of expensive gear plus an electronics guy on call _just to get started_ recording on your state-of-the-art 4 track, LOL. Now it all fits in my iPad bag... 👍

I’m sure you’ll never get a question like this again. I’m 73 years old. I’ve been a session player since 1967 ( did one session with the Wtecking Crew in LA back in 69 ) . I’m totally into analog ,and recording everything on my iPad with no plug ins . I’ll record an acoustic guitar first with no click track, then tap out a rhythm on anything that will create a percussive sound ( cardboard box, empty tin can, handclaps etc. Then a bass track ,and lastly the vocals which I just sing with the original first acoustic guitar track. I’ve been using my old iPad Air ,hence no way to interface a microphone. It’s just getting ideas ,and vocal harmonies down.My daughter gave me an Apple Macbook five years ago, I’ve tried recording on it using a Focusritd 2n2 with two Rode condenser mics. However , I only know how to use GarageBand in the very early itinerations , which are the best if you want to record the way I do. The iPad has a very early GarageBand ,so it’s quite easy as there are not a lot of work around. But the fact that the iPad is limited to recording with the built in mics, which are of course a joke . Then when I go to the MacBook, it’s a new GarageBand, and it’s got so much shit going on , it just will not let me get a simple all live, all mic recording. The ONLY thing I use on GarageBand is the microphone, and acoustic guitar, I don’t go near any looping, bass, keyboards ,drums or anything else. The Focusrite works fine, but as the GarageBand on MacBook had soooo many paths you have to go through, just to try and get a good vocal ,and acoustic guitar sound ( I like to record the acoustic where you can hear the click of the pick hitting the strings on chords ) . So my MacBook 2013 I believe has not been used hardly at all 120 charges on battery , as I like to not be cumbeted down with more wires . All in all I’ll bet I’ve not put 100 hours on the MacBook. Here we are Jan. 2019 . I want to sell the MacBook, and get a 12.9 inch first or second generation iPad Pro . That would give me a large screen, and it’s my understanding that Focusrite has a new interface for iPads , ( Focusrite on MacBook is USB , which seems insane ) . “ get to the question you fuck8mg idiot “ ! OK, OK , be kind I’m an old man. If I get an iPad Pro that I would use ONLY for recording , what would you suggest I use ,what simple app with say 16 channels where I can use the new Focusrite iPad interface , using my Rode mics ,and get ONLY what I would use to mic everything . Remember I’m coming from a 4 ,then eight track analog tape background . Obviously with 8 or possibly 16 tracks on tape, you would still bounce tracks ( Queen ) . I’m hell bent on getting my own compositions recorded with great fidelity . Rather like what recorded music sounded like on studio playbacks in late sixties . I’ll leave you with this. Beatles sing “ I Will “ Paul did that all acoustic guitar ,overdubbed harmonies ,and 12 string intervals ,and a percussion sound. That’s the sound quality I’m looking . If ANYBODY has read my entire post here, I applaud you . I would have stopped after first sentence . I know I’m going retro, but that’s what I do best . Thank You .

Your UA-cam videos have been a game changer for me. Switching to iOS production was something I’ve been contemplating for awhile but it can be frustrating at times. Your info has provided a lot of clarity and has gave me the confidence to know I can produce the way I want to in iOS!!! Thanks a million!!! The fact that you even do this is absolutely inspiring and I appreciate it immensely!!!

you just sold me the ipad pro! I used an ipad mini 2 for two yrs now and have spent over 100euros just for the apps, which is ironic because its like half of the money ud spend on your device itself. now that i work with elektron machines and actual synths an ipad can work as an actual syth, controlled by an external sequencer, how crazy is that? love your style and the commitment, cheers!

Man, I am new to your channel. Maybe you have already answered this question. I know that you wanted to go back to your roots, come back to making simple decisions while composing, but just wanted to ask - is now iPad really your only tool for making music? Or do you export your ideas to a computer DAW for the finalisation in the studio? Or do you just export final version for mastering in the studio?

Great video homie! I got a couple great apps from your recommendations. I just started using the ipad and so far I'm loving it. They are just so convenient because as a DJ and producer I can have all my tools on 1 device in 1 place! The ipad is amazing for music, it's definitely much better than i thought it would be and it's made life easier for sure. I am really thankful for the time you take to educate us and keeping us up to date. Me personally, I am studying audio engineering and it’s really informative, but you are living proof that it doesn’t need to have those big and pricey setups to make good music. Would you mind showing us your workflow from beat creation to mastering and uploading? Maybe even how you handle your filming setup and editing ... I mean from start to finish? Because I feel really stuck on how I want to go on in the future about producing and marketing my work and myself

Werdrath I just lack in keeping my motivation up when in my head I know what to do but it takes so long on certain DAWs and plugins or apps to get there, it just kills the flow and I don’t enjoy doing those repetitive elongated obnoxious tasks and just loosing the momentum. And the Colossus Piano app is the absolute best piano app on IOS. The concert piano has 24 layers per key. The upright sounds amazing too. It’s free to download however the in app purchases are steep. The file sizes are also extremely large but it has to be with all it entails. Definitely worth a look. Also audio unit compatible.

Great video as always. Definitely one of your best. I recently caught on to your page and have been running through the videos. Absolutely great information with a great delivery.
One app I noticed you kind of skipped over was ThumbJam. I don’t really use it for sounds but the main reason I find it extremely useful is the midi scale lock function. It can map any scale even exotic scales to my midi keyboard and map it to the c major scale or all the white keys. I’m not great at playing keys but I can play the hell out of c major and a minor lol. And if you don’t have a midi keyboard available I find it to be one of the best midi controllers as well.

I think I’m a bit behind the curve since I’ve managed to avoid using beat maker 3 and am still stuck to my mac using Logic but mainly for my Maschine and using my iPad as peripheral for the apps I love and I have a lot of the same favorites, patterning is my favorite interface for making glitchy variations on my drums, and Audiobus 3 is my main tool to bring my gear together and bus into Logic or Ableton (besides Maschine and NI Komplete it’s the main reason I’m not ready to give up the extra gear just yet, it’s just too wild for live performances and using the midi effects on my live controllers and midi guitar playing), but I’m gonna check out Beatmaker and see if it can do the job, you seem like a man who knows his biz! I’ve been researching music apps for iOS for the past five years. My first requirement is that they be absolutely free with no ads...ha! So that does limit my choices, but also forces me to look far and wide. Your video is invaluable because you have a focused list of professional level iOS tools. I’d suggest you could go a little slower; sometimes you’d rattle off 4 or 5 names, there was no text on the screen when this happened, so I missed it. Also, the list of links was not in the same order that you spoke of them in the video - made it a little hard to follow along. But very cool, and you upped my game in 10 minutes flat!

I have a 17inch gaming asus pc with reaper (daw) but it only holds about 2 hours of battery charge and it’s heavy. I was looking into iOS for a more portable solution and now I’m seeing this iPad with all the apps is probably more powerful than my current setup. Thanks for the dope video man.

Did you ever use iMPC Pro 2? If so, what did you hate and like about it? BM3 is cool, but I personally prefer the workflow of iMPC Pro 2.

You‘re awesome! I was looking for an iPad App I can correct my vocals with - thanks to you, I found it: the VirSyn stuff will do the job. Also LumaFusion seems pretty cool! I have a lot of Mac plugins and usually produce with Cubase and NI Komplete, but just like you said: sometimes it‘s useful to shrink the setup to achieve an outstanding result... and thanks to the iPad and the great Apps available, this is now possible! Keep it up man, all the best!

I like your newest back ground choice. It is a richer as in color and background interest. I think one of the best right now on UA-cam. The only ones better are the news channel like foxnews etc.

Great vid. On n off I’ve been making music on iOS for about 6 years. Boosted my device power from an iPhone 6 to an iPad Pro 10.5 in January. Got a some ideas for future apps from this vid. Thanks man. Ps: I recommend you jailbrake if possible. Root access is amazing for file sharing in all apps.

This is dope! However, I want to know how you handle/manage file sizes. I'm sure with the number of projects you're working on, file storage will accumulate fast. Please, I want to know your production process. Thanks!

Great selection. I'm getting a new iPad soon primarily for music making. Will a 32gb iPad (2017 version, not the pro) be enough to store tons of apps and let's say up to 1gb of samples?

My main IOS music app would be Geoshred which I use with a Seaboard Rise but I also use touchAble for controlling ableton Genome for quick sequencing and iMaschine 2 for creative freestyle messing around.

Peace Henny, thank for this video. A lot has change in how we do music production over the years. Just like you, I have had tons of music production gear. Yes as you get older, you want to keep up with the younger music producers. I all the way agree. As I write this, I am considering getting the ipad Pro 12.9. My current set up, in the 2nd phase of my music life. MPC REN, MIDI CONTROLLER AND iMAC. I'm ready for the third phase ipad, and mini controller. Thank you for sharing what you use, especially the video apps. BTW we both have a mutual friend Needlz. Peace my G. -Neek Rusher
