There is a procedure for starting these machines, particularly when cold. Deviate and sometimes they are hard to start.

    • @minoosethna4615

Yes. Put the engine into retard, i.e. shut the right hand grip, shut the fuel corks, open the choke, that lever bent out from the air cleaner, kick - and you'll hear a 'sneeze' from the air cleaner, switch on ignition and taking up the slack, kick and after the engine starts open to advance. The clutch too has a unique system. The clutch has multiple washers, one star, and between the the 2 steel washers is a fibre one. In traffic when the clutch lever is down, and the lights go green, you accelarate and the clutch releases slowly giving you enough time to get going. The bike, unlike the HD has a side stand. To remove the rear wheel, you pull the bike towarrds you and kick out the main stand and rest the machine on one leg of the main stand and the side stand. Also when you do a night parking push the bike back on the two legs of the main stand. Oh how reluctantlly I gave mine away.

Great video! At 4min there is a yellow -48 with a chrome star emblem on the front fender. Was this an original add-on for Indians or a dealer option? Anyone with info where I can get them? Seen before on old chiefs.

My Father had one back when I was nothing but a small kid. I don't know what year or size engine it had, but I remember him taking me for rides on it. He'd set me across the gas tank and tell me to "steer" (yeah, right). I remember that he had to use both his hands and feet. It had a shifter on the side of the tank, a foot operated clutch, a right foot rear brake, and a twist handle on the left side handlebar. He told me it was a "spark gap" control, but later I learned that it was more like a manual advance for the timing. And if you didn't know just how much to twist it it ran like crap!!! I've always loved the older bikes. Just something about them.....

I traded that bike to D.R. for the 48 chief that was up and running plus he gave me $1200. cash, the year was 1976. The rest is history. Ok so the way to cold start an Indian is. Turn on the gas, give it full choke, with the key off give it two kicks. Open the choke two clicks, turn the key on give it a vigorous kick. If it does not start do the entire procedure again. Once it starts advance the timing and slowly open the choke during the warm up. Most of the starts shown no way were they "cold". I've owned 300+ Chief over the past 50 years.

I got an '88 Harley Softail and the next one that I want is an Indian Chief. However due to the covid scamdemic here in Canada we're shut down all over and here in Quebec, sporting good items are now considered to be non essential, in other words we're going full commie. I wonder where that leaves biking up here now...time to get the hell outta here !!
