It was a few years down the line, when I came across his American song book material, and like you Jackie, this was the first song I heard him sing, and was totally smitten bye the Big Band sound No matter what anyone thinks of Rod Stewart, this guy has “charisma” and I totally agree with you about this type of music. He has his own style but he can belt out standards as if he was born to sing them. Some have said he doesn't have the voice for them but they are badly mistaken. After all, if Louis Armstrong could sing them so can Rod. So glad he made these Great American Songbook recordings.

My Mother adored this song, and I have been without her for 2 yrs. now, and I wake up humming this song even though this was for her first husband Russell who she lost in Belgium during the war. She always sang this song and funny, I am singing this song for her now. Michele.
Mine too ! She passed today at this hour 6 yrs.ago. Am playing this now, MISSING her so. She didn't like Rod in my teen Rock yrs. butt then when he did this !!! Her NEW LOVE, kicked Sinatra to the curb, I bought her all 3 of his orchestrated old songs , played when she took her last Breath !
For all those bashing this arrangement and Rod's version, take a musician's perspective. Perhaps this is the music that Rod really enjoys? He has made his millions now and has his knighthood. He probably doesn't care about people's opinions now. If he wants to sing what truly makes him happy or content then who's to stop him? Regardless of it's quality, the man should be left alone when also considering his contribution to other music genres...
There was a house band playing at the then new Philippine Village Hotel in Pasay City (Metro Manila) in the mid -70's and they closed out their show every evening with this number - great tune, great lyrics, great job by Rod ... great memories.
