This song about a delivery guys lifestyle working hard and long hours moving microwave ovens , custom kitchens refrigerators and colour tvs and not get paid much to a rockstar only playing a guitar or drums and getting paid millions for doing nothing . This song was released in 1985 and was the first ever music video played on mtv Europe in 1985 and for me the greatest music video ever made and most iconic guitar riffs of the 80s and in top 10 most iconic guitar riffs of all time

Mark Knopfler the guitar player was in an appliance store one day in the 80s when MTV was still new and there was a bank of TVs on the wall and he was listing to the store workers sales people and delivery people lamenting about their lot in life. Saying they should play the guitar on the MTV. Being sales people they keep going back to selling microwaves and other appliances. Recommended song the Allman Brothers whipping post
This was apparently inspired by Mark Knopfler overhearing two delivery guys talking in an appliance shop. The attitudes (and diction) are theirs. This came out in ‘85, in MTV’s heyday.
Sting and Mark Knofler are both from the North East of England (though Knofler was born in Glasgow Scotland) , why Sting does intro /outro good friends , the F word was a reference to manual workers towards , MTV stars making mega bucks for a seemingly simple job. a commentary on how hard working folk used language at the time, and you'd need to ask Mark but highlighting how badly it was used
It''s a great reaction from you. I'm a gay man, was 16 or 17 when I heard/watched this, and no sweat. I got it. It's the perfect song. Art imitates life, etc. Great song
The lyrics of this song were taken directly from remarks that Mark Knopfler overheard from some delivery guys in a stereo store one day, thus the rough language. (Another song like that is Elton John's "Texan Love Song", based on comments Elton's band heard in the South about the "long-haired commies".) The computer animation in this video was absolute cutting-edge at the time. Back then, MTV was ALL music videos. The channel was meant to be a video alternative to the radio, so they have "veejays" who hosted the same way a deejay would on the radio. This format survived for several years before the novelty started wearing off and the ratings dropped, which is when the channel began to produce original content. But those first few years saw an explosion of creativity, some of it really weird and wonderful. :)

My best friend's coool brother was 15 and had this album and if we begged on our knees he would let us listen to it! He was like "dont touch it!" lol, just like in "Spinal tap". Oh those were the days.
That was MTV's theme. I want my MTV! It was all music videos 24/7 and kids were glued to it. They're referring to Boy George, I believe. Back then we weren't politically correct.
MTV was an institution back then, something you watched, lived and identified with 24/7. At our high school We had a tv, playing MTV, at our cafeteria all days long. Guess where we spend our breaks. Now it’s just 🤷♂️
Mtv was a phenom never heard of. Music videos 24-7 all day every day. It introduced "VJs" video jockeys like radios djs disc jockeys. If you were a young person this was the greatest. To watch music videos all day all your favorite musicians and songs.
Mark Knopfler (lead guitar/vocals) wrote this song true to what he overheard a 'couple of meathead' appliance delivery guys saying while watching MTV on 20 or so TV's in a department store. He caught flak for including 'the language' and slurs, but the song isn't the same without it... once you know the context. :)
That's what worker at appliance saying about band singing on MTV. Guy was saying he should have learned to play guitar...paid money for nothing! Used unPC words. Not Knopfler words.
If you are interested in a deeper dive on Dire Straits, several songs that you may enjoy are Sultans of Swing, Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, and Tunnel of Love (the last is my personal favorite, but it's a little on the long side). Walk of Life also displays a similar sense of humor in the video (without dated slurs against any demographics thrown in). Meanwhile, Brothers in Arms is just as serious as you might expect for a song that is sung from the perspective of a military veteran.
And if you are looking for other songs by other bands I would highly recommend this classic from the Edgar Winter Group. It's a 1973 live performance of "Frankenstein" that was performed and taped in a TV studio for later broadcast. The musicianship is incredible and the energy is really amazing considering there's no audience feedback. ua-cam.com/video/P8f-Qb-bwlU/v-deo.html

Dire Straits is most certainly the GOAT! I'm always amazed that no one seems to talk about my favorite tune of theirs... 'Wild West End' (off their 1st album). I suppose that a road trip from central Missouri to SW British Columbia (~1900 miles) with my 'Wild Best Friend' in the summer of 1979 where we agreed this was 'the greatest song ever!' had something to do with that. We nearly wore that cassette out on that trip. Sadly, this friend took his own life 5 months later... cementing that song as a memory with my 'Wild Best Friend'... :) For any that haven't heard this tune, search for T4Ad_J_2l0w .
Dire Straits was a phenomenal band. I believe their first album is still their best. Of course, Sultans of Swing come to mind but check out Waterline. Just incredible work. The lead guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler went on to a great solo career which included scoring films. Of particular note is the film Local Hero (a brilliantly understated cinematic masterpiece - worthy of its own look).

If you like great musicians with catchy songs check out The Who and their song "Who Are You." They have a bunch of other great songs as well. Started in the early 60s. Their big songs hit in the late 60s and early 70s. But they had several hits in the 1980s as well.
Everyone who reacts to this song does a double-take when they hear the language in the second verse! The irony is that there are tons of other songs, notably in rock, metal and rap music, that include far stronger and more offensive lyrics. Incidentally when Mark Knopfler (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter) realised how offensive gay people found the word he stopped singing it when he performs the song, substituting words like 'queenie' and 'mothertrucker' instead. There are a huge number of great Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo tracks. It's always worth checking out live performances because all the musicians Mark works with are superb. The Alchemy Live and On The Night albums/DVDs just ooze talent. You should also check out 'I Think I Love You Too Much' from the Knebworth '90 concert. Legends Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton and their respective bands all playing together - the guitar alone playing is sublime!
Yeah. Someone in Canada tried to have the song banned from the radio a couple of years back. Knopfler even offered to provide an alternative version with the offending word replaced, but in the end the courts threw the case out on the basis of the context in which it is used. Some common sense for once!

Something to bear in mind when hearing these lyrics is that they’re not the sentiments of the singer. He was a journalist before the band got famous and was good at documenting situations. One day he was in a store and heard one of the store men grumbling to his workmates that they had to move colour TVs and refrigerators whilst the guys on the TVs on the wall didn’t have to do anything resembling work but they’d become millionaires.
Subscriber here, patiently waiting for stevie ray vaughn Texas flood live from elmacambo. You wont be disappointed. P.s stevie died in his early 30s in a helicopter crash
This song was popular in the early days of MTV. Its meant to spoof the viewpoint of guys who work "real" jobs such as the guys who move and install appliances scoffing at what they perceive to be the easy and carefree life of the rock stars they see performing on the TVs (they would presumably see a lot of this if they work somewhere that sells and installs appliances). The fact that it is the rock musicians singing the song is meant to be ironic. Make sense?
2:50 That's the actual spirit. You say a simple "never mind." and do it off like any real adult would. Thanks for listening to the uncensored/cut video and song. The background is, that this was a conversation the songwriter caught in a electronics market, two workers doing hauling jobs, talking about a music clip running on the TV's as a demo. They were complaining about the dudes making "money for nothing", and that they get all the chicks, and were mocking that lifestyle, because they thought theirs was more hard working and thus more stressful. They also used the "faggot" to describe what they saw as "gayish" behaviour, strange looking hair that maybe was dyed too, and having having ear rings and everything. The lyrics of the song are simply a portrait of some parts of the working class back in the 80's, and I find it more important to preserve moments like that. Back in the 80's, people thought "what two morons these guys are" if they heard a conversation like that, and people who thought rudely, using the word "faggot", were quite frequently found, but some knew when to shut their mouths in public, those two didn't apparently. It's more important to leave this part of history alive, and not cut it away because we don't like it anymore. Think of what would be if they would cut the parts about slavery out of history books, and the part of the Vietnam war, and Korean war, just because we don't like it anymore. By censoring and cutting out history, we are ignoring a detail that was once existing, and shall never exist any time again. It's forgetting by simply cutting out details we don't like. The totally wrong approach to address an issue.
"Nevermind. Let's move on."

I guess they just refused to see he was using irony and mocking the fools who thought like that, but hey, isn't ir more cool to be a " victim"?
Yeah. Someone in Canada tried to have the song banned from the radio a couple of years back. Knopfler even offered to provide an alternative version with the offending word replaced, but in the end the courts threw the case out on the basis of the context in which it is used. Some common sense for once!
@@jjc5407 We're living in weird times when " snowflakes " are being kow-towed to whilst the valiant health-care workers still are not being protected enough as they try to save lives.
Whining is encouraged along with aggression.
How odd.
As of a few years ago, they entirely removed the verse on the version most radio stations here play.
Robin Trower, Too Rolling Stoned. Thanks!!
Try Sultans of Swing from the same group much earlier in their career. They higher voice in the beginning and end is Sting from The Police. Other comments have already been made. Awesome job.
Search celebrities I want my mtv. Not everyone around the country could get mtv when it first started! There was a huge public service campaign to force all cable carriers to offer mtv! Tons of celebrities made commercials ! They are funny!
Back then you could say what I think you heard on that song..anytime you hear it now the word is deleted..and rightly so...
Cool song. I recommend "Don't Turn Around" by Aswad from 1988.
I'm a huge DS fan. Check out Romeo & Juliet and Telegraph Road.
Look at Sultans of Swing you will hear some Genius Guitar
The lyrics were verbatim what the singer overheard coming from the storeroom at an electrical showroom.
Make sense?
ALVIN LEE...BLUEST BLUES 😎
For a more depth you should do their song "Brothers at Arms" . Enjoy

Yeah, he said it. Back before the PC crowd got out if hand.
Well... what else could you call Boy George in 1984? There were no other words for him...
