NOTE: In this video i'm specifically talking about solutions for recording to SSD Drives only (not CFAST or solutions with half CFAST)!!! To me personally why use half a solution paying $2000 dollars for 1TB of CFAST (4x256GB) vs just $300 for 1TB SSD. And when I mention that you cannot record full 4.6K RAW at 60p i'm talking about Full Uncompressed RAW. It is possible to record compressed RAW to one single drive, but that still doesn't solve the problem that I need my SDI Ports for Live Production (hence why I have 3 Ursa Mini cameras).
I use Sandisk Ultra II SSD's and record 4.6K Uncompressed Raw at 24fps. You can use 2 of them to record 60fps Uncompressed Raw. If you want faster, they have the new Sandisk Ultra 3D SSD's. I bought one a few days ago. They are faster than the Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD cards. I talked to Sandisk a few days ago and the Extreme Pro's are discontinued. The Ultra 3D is taking it's place.
Just to be clear: Are saying that it is possible with Blackmagics OWN recorder to 1) Record Uncompressed Raw 30fps 4,6K on one SSD in the recorder 2) Record 3:1 Compressed Raw 60fps at 4,6K at on one SSD in the recorder Dual Recording isn't possible, but there is an Option to record (compressed) RAW with 50-60fps on the recommended SSDs with the SSD recorder? An answer would be much appreciated!
MrCheesyCam I have a cc fast adapter on the way from China; is the Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD compatible? Also what is the max TB the adapter can handle? I figured I'd ask since you actually own one.
Thanks so much for this! Looks like Blackmagic just released a firmware update for the Production Camera 4K so that it is now compatible with it's SSD Drive adapter.
Having only one SSD seems like such a weird decision on their part. It's using the 12G-SDI port but it's only connected to it with 6G-SDI so they clearly could have supported two drives. I wonder if they could release an official two SSD solution with an HD-SDI pass through. That seems like it would be ideal.
It's interesting that you're getting different results. I've been able to record 4:1 Raw at 60p on Samsung 850 Evos with the Blackmagic SSD Recorder. When I tested it I ran it for 10 minutes without a problem before I shut it off.
You're right, it can record compressed RAW, but not Uncompressed RAW at 60p. But personally testing out 4:1 RAW was not that great, so I never use it. It seems just too compressed for me which defeats the purpose of RAW. Aside from that though, I have several of these cameras because I do Live Production, and Live Switching, so I need a solution that leaves me with my SDI ports. But if you don't need much, the BlackMagic Design SSD recorder works. I personally need a lot more than what the BM SSD can offer.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered one. Please advise on the following: do you think two Samsung Evo 850 1T are sufficient to record uncompressed 4.6k raw at 60p? Blackmagic tested out ssds that are able to record 4.6k uncompressed raw at 30p on a single ssd. the eva 850 1T is not among them (while the pro 1T version and the the 4T eva is). I would think that it works in dual mode but wanted to be sure before spending on them. Also: when recording in dual mode: can you plug the ssds into your pc and just start editing in resolve as if it was recorded on a single drive? Thanks for any help!
Hello. Thank for your details on this. However, checking today the link for CCtech Ebay stores says "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available." I also found that Amazon says the same. Do you know if available from other retailers?
I am outputting to a Tricaster Mini through the SDI ports so this is amazing. Can you run this while outputting to the SDI? This would be to create a backup while outputting to a Tricaster for broadcast.
Hello thanks very much for this very helpful video. It seems cctech is available only on ebay China for UK market. Have you faced any issues using cctech like dropped frames etc as some people have experienced issues with their 2.5 inch ssd enclosures like dropped frames on DIY solution. But cctech seems a very good solution even if the monitor door is kept slightly open. I am planning to buy a ursa mini pro in next few days. Would you recommend it in mid 2018 over other cinema camcorders like c200, fs7 etc? Also, I have short listed Samsung 860 evo 1tb x 2 ssd's for the UMP. Would it be a good choice over pro ssd's? I think BMD only suggests pro vs evo but then let's see. In regards to the lenses you have, I read that tokina 11-16 or 11-20 are not very sharp lenses, how do you find yours please? Would you recommend tokina 11 - 20 f2.8, sigma art 18 - 35 f1.8, tamron 24 - 70 f2.8 vc gen 2, tamron 70-200 f2.8 vc gen 2. Thanks & Regards.
No issues with dropped frames. If you shoot mainly 24p or 30p and Prores HQ you can pretty cheap SSD drives. You’ll need better drives if you shoot full 4.6K RAW uncompressed as well as dual card mode. I like the Ursa image quality, but the Canon C200 seems like a good option. I just don’t like how it has to use CFAST for RAW as that media is expensive.
MrCheesyCam Hello and thanks again for your kind reply. Here in the UK we have another very good and very similar dual ssd recorder for Ursa in another name, May be from same manufacturer abroad but in different name, it's called cinediskpro for around £300. Now I am totally torn between c200, ursa mini pro and Eva 1 :( C200 - superb af & lowlight & image quality but internal codecs & memory option sucks big time which definitely are the deal breakers but I like c200 very much. I watched a recent video on YT where someone fixed a ssd and v mount battery onto his c200 but it voided his warranty which he doesn't care about. Eva 1 superb image quality, great low light with dual native iso and light weight but feels like a larger GH5S and unusable af for pro work BUT can record whole 5.7k and 240 fps 2k or 60 fps 4k plus proresraw and other great codecs to expensive external recorders like shogun inferno etc and finally my favourite BBB (big bad boy) the ultimate UMP BUT I think it's bad in low light plus crap af but everything else superb i think unless I'm mistaken. Did you notice or had any issues with your UMP? I heard and watched a lot of people had many issues at first but seem to be fine now. Gosh. Honestly it's very confusing now. With your great experience out of these three which one would you kindly suggest and why? I want it for events plus corporate and narrative films. Thanks very much for your humble advice. Regards.
Does the viewfinder being partially opened interfere with shoulder held shooting? It seems like that could get annoying for shoulder shooting on the ursa broadcast cameras.
MrCheesyCam also I can’t find CCtech anywhere in America. It all comes from China at the moment and takes like a month to come in. Do you know any sellers here?
I have a similar set up, but having real trouble with my sdd drive afterwards, I try to connect it to my imac, but it does not show up, so am unable to view the footage. I'm not a tech, camera guy, so any help would be appreciated, I have the ursa mini, with hyperx savage SSD drive, but just can't figure how to see the footage anywhere and there seems to be no explanations anywhere for it. Thanks for any advice
Do you mean the drive does not show up when connected? Or does the drive show up, and you cannot view the files? If you are shooting braw, then you need davinci resolve to render out the files. You can’t see it in other applications.
@@MrCheesyCam Hi Mrcheesy, it doesn't even show up, someone told me to get a usb 3.0 to sata 2.5 adapter cable reader, so hopefully this will fix it now. Thanks ;-)
So mines just came in the mail but didnt ship with instructions. Im having an issue mounting it to my camera. I already took the other battery plate off my camera. Can you do a tutorial or a quick blog post on that?
The reason it works is that CFAST is like a mini sata solid state drive. So I don't think one or the other could be said to be more reliable. But of course there are cheap CFAST cards that are not recommended to be used with the URSA, and same could be said about SSD drives. If you get a good one you should have no issues.
I did some research and the official black magic record has (supposedly) released support for the non pro ursa mini after this video was made. it only requires a firmware update. I could be wrong but this is what some of the q&a treads say on B&H. i plan to try it my self when i get the chance.
Yes it will work with the older Ursa Mini, but it still used the SDI output, and that is a big problem if you do live switching. That’s the reason I purchased three Ursa cameras. The solution they offer goes totally against being able to use that SDI output..
Do you then simply connect your ssd drive to the editing station and a usb 3 interface allowing you to keep the footage on the ssd and edit straight from there?
There are a few fairly large factual errors in this video regarding the Blackmagic URSA Mini SSD Recorder. You CAN record RAW in 3:1 or 4:1 compression up to 60 frames to a single SSD easily. You can also achieve 60fps in 4.6K Lossless RAW by shooting dual card. The BMD SSD recorder will allow dual card recording and spill recording across only the card in slot 1. It will allow you to bounce between the SSD and the CFast or SD card in slot 1 in the same way you can when shooting internally on the Mini so that initial statement that you start with is incorrect. Also Blackmagic have mentioned on their forum that they are intending on adding support for the URSA Mini in a firmware update. It would be good if you correct this video so that it provides correct details about the products.
Yes they did update the firmware. but it still uses the SDI out, which I need for live production, and you still can’t use dual card mode without investing in CFAST cards. I’ve been happy with the other adapter I have, and ended up buying another.
We have problems with CCTECH. Everything works when the cable is connected to the camera. But once the screws touches the camera it begins to jerk, something similar to short circuit.
So there are actually different size SSD drives out there, and some are just a few millimeters more slim. Typically they come with adapters you stick on the ssd.
@@MrCheesyCam Thank you for responding. I really appreciate you taking the time. I'm trying to find adapters that would make the thin SSDs fit nicely into the the C2S, but I'm not having any luck. Do you know of any adapters?
pls pls pls I want to have this adapter in one week, and in Ebay page say is coming in 10 or 20 days from china. Exist a way to have it on a week???? pls T-T
question: if you really wanted to close the LCD using the CCTECH SSD (maybe squishing the wires a bit) to be used on a gimbal like the Ronin or MoVi, can it be done? I know its probably not ideal but that's my #1 concern.
MrCheesyCam gotcha. Thanks so much for the quick response - I really appreciate it. I haven't fully explored your channel (which I will), but as a fellow Ursa Mini Pro (and the original Ursa) owner, I'd love to hear what lenses you love with this set - what you own and what you love to rent when the budget is there. Thanks a lot man!
+Michael Simo I rarely ever rent anything, but I’ve managed to get away with a set of Xeen Cinema Primes, a full set of Rokinon Cine DS prime lenses, and for my zoom lenses I have the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8, canon 17-55mm F/2.8 EF-S (love the image stabilization), 24-105mm, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8, and 100mm Macro. This range of lenses gets me around a lot of jobs. But I would say a majority of the time for run-gun I use the 17-55mm EFS.
Thanks so much man. While I don't have them in my arsenal, I've had the chance to do a lot of shooting with the canon 24-105, 24-70 and 70-200 (my fav of them). The Rokinon Cine CS were actually way sharper than I thought they'd be. I finally made a purchase since I've always been renting, but I decided to go with a flawless used Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 Distagon ZE which I'll send to Duclos in LA or a cine mod - so far it looks insanely sharp. I personally have only owned a bunch of Minolta Rokkor 70-80's & Nikon Nikkor 70-80's prime stills lenses which have a really unique look with a lot of depth. But they are a bit old..Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to checking out more of your videos!
+Michael Simo Yeah Rokinon’s aren’t the best, but the lenses have a matching look (for cheap) which makes it easier to edit in post. Old lenses are nice, but can have a much different look every time you switch from on to another. Could be tint, contrast, saturation, sharpness, etc. So just to make things easier and faster for myself I wanted matching lenses. The set of Rokinon DS looks very much like the higher end Xeens.
Thanks for the info. Does the SSD module work with the original Blackmagic Design V-Lock Plate? I was able to get a seller to offer the SSD module without the V-lock Plate for $100 cheaper since I already have the Blackmagic V-Lock Plate.
It sits between the battery and the camera. As you dock the battery it gets power from the battery, and also passes power to the camera. It’s a pretty clean setup.
Since the 4.9 update, the blackmagic official ssd recorder works perfectly on the Ursa 4.6K and now even on the 4K. With a Sandisk Extreme Pro I was able to shoot 4.6K Lossless Raw at 60p no problem. After shooting a feature using a system like the cctech, I can tell you that having cables sticking out (which at times can get yanked out in the middle of a handheld shot), and not being able to close the screen properly is a nightmare. Blackmagic's solution is a much better and more elegant solution for using SSDs.
Your use case sounds very different than mine. I do live broadcast and live production. In most case cameras are not being handheld for shots. I really need my SDI ports. There is no way the Blackmagic SSD adapter works for my needs. So unfortunately there is no perfect solution, and fortunately we all have options.
Yes it does now. Not at the time I made this video. Still doesn’t solve the problem about taking up the SDI ports. I’ve been using the CCtECH almost every day and have had no issues.
That change came after this video in a future firmware update. When they first released it, it did not work and they made no comments about making it compatible with the older model. They sounded like they insisted it only would work with the PRO models. But after this video (several weeks after), they finally made some firmware update to work with the older camera. But even so, this doesn't solve some of the issues I have with it. I have (3) ursa because I do live production. I NEED MY SDI outputs for Live Production. Their solution uses up the SDI so you can't do live production as the camera was intended. Also, they only have one SSD slot. Even though they say you can still do Dual Card mode with theirs, you have to use one SSD and one CFAST. How inconvenient is that? A 256GB CFast is super expensive, so if you threw a 1TB SSD drive, and one 256GB CFAST just to do dual card mode with their solution, you would be limited to 256GB of space in dual card mode! I've been using my solution for a long time now, and I shoot very very often. It's been the best investment for this type of camera, and I even purchased another one. I would not go back to theirs. I'm not knocking them in any way, I buy all Blackmagic Design products, but this particular one is not the best solution for me.
Thanks for the thorough reply :) Yes I understand that now. I understand the problem you have, you raise a really good point. But if I'm not streaming live will that not really be a problem for me? In other words, is the SDI that will be being occupied by the SSD, does it need to be used for anything else other than live streaming?
True. But besides the machined aluminum housing, it's just a basic CFAST to SATA adapter. Pretty much the same as the ATOCH or similar product. I've never had a problem with those, so I'm hoping I won't have a problem with this one.
Sorry, definitely need the SDI ports free and this does nothing for the other URSA's. There are better solutions at half the price and Cfast route is definitely out if your doing profesional work with huge storage needs..
+Starving Artist 101 (1) Reliable 256GB CFast costs about $500+. You need (2) to really make this camera work. That’s $1K already. You can get this SSD adapter + (2) 500GB drives for the same price. And everytime you need more media it’s way cheaper. No way around it with this camera, it eats up media if you want the best resolution and RAW.
And when I mention that you cannot record full 4.6K RAW at 60p i'm talking about Full Uncompressed RAW. when I click on the link to the CCTECH SSD Recorders, are the cheaper ones any different from the more expensive ones? Just wanna save a few bucks
If it looks the same, most likely it is the same. But check seller ratings before choosing one.
it seems like you can use that adapter for all the ursa minis with the firmware update
The SSD sits pretty loose in the Atoch C2S. Is there an adapter to make it a snug fit?
Thank you!
It’s Possible to use with gimbal??? in ronin I think it would be tight... :/
Have you tried to connect the BM SSD Recorder to URSA Mini 4k? My local BlackMagic reseller told me its supported. Is it true?
They are saying a later firmware upgrade may make it work. But not at the moment.
Thank you very much!
It works. I use it with mine.
Can you run the CC-tech SSD with the existing V-lock plate?
Yes you can
Very helpful, thank you so much. Put to ease my concerns.
i love to have that BlackMagic URSA Mini Pro
pls pls pls I want to have this adapter in one week, and in Ebay page say is coming in 10 or 20 days from china.
You can close the LCD over the wires, but the wires are heavily insulated and it will not completely shut. Pretty beefy.
How is the CCtech SSD drive holding up?
Sooo good! I bought another one.
Thanks for the info. Does the SSD module work with the original Blackmagic Design V-Lock Plate? I was able to get a seller to offer the SSD module without the V-lock Plate for $100 cheaper since I already have the Blackmagic V-Lock Plate.
bm always have to be a step behind. The old dual mode had been around for sometimes and i thought they would do better.
How is the cctech powered? Through DC power?
It sits between the battery and the camera. As you dock the battery it gets power from the battery, and also passes power to the camera. It’s a pretty clean setup.
Its also smaller! good vid!
Thanks man this is dope
This was great!
I'll just wait for the next camera. This thing is getting larger and larger.
Great tip! Thanks!
tHE BLM SSD RECORDER ABSOLUTELY WORKS WITH THE 4.6 EF!! NOT JUST THE PRO!!
Yes it does now. Not at the time I made this video. Still doesn’t solve the problem about taking up the SDI ports. I’ve been using the CCtECH almost every day and have had no issues.
Love this!
actually this SSD DOES work for the blackmagic mini ursa 4K (not pro)... r u sure it doesn't???
Thanks for the thorough reply :)
Yes I understand that now. I understand the problem you have, you raise a really good point. But if I'm not streaming live will that not really be a problem for me?
In other words, is the SDI that will be being occupied by the SSD, does it need to be used for anything else other than live streaming?
A good solution, of course! But there's no warranty except the 14 return policy.
There are better solutions at half the price and Cfast route is definitely out if your doing profesional work with huge storage needs..
this is great but it cost $540?!
Use Tom Antos's solution, costs a total of about $280 and can be repositioned for gimbal work.
Thanks. I get that you didn't actually watch this whole video. Already touched on that, not a good solution for me.
The price just dropped to $469.
FAKE!!!! sorry i follow BMD hard and this is third party goods. when BlackMagic drop the official adapter its going to be an event.
You have no clue what you’re talking about...
Is the BMD-SSD Recorder working on ursa mini 4,6k (not Pro) up to 60fps in 4k?
