As you can see here, the original Castlevania wasn't only on the NES, but also on the MSX computer. Author scrimpeh ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/s... ) did on the MSX Castlevania what Phil ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/Phil ) Côté & Morrison ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/M... ) did on the NES Castlevania ( tasvideos.org/901M ).
This version is different in some important ways. Some new gameplay elements include the requirement to collect a white key in each stage in order to advance, the removal of the chain whip after each boss battle, and the ability to buy subweapons from sitting bystanders in white or red clothes.
This is an improvement of 01:14.90 over the previous run thanks to a few new time-saving tricks.

I love the old school Castlevania games, my favourites of all time. 1 3 & 4 are fantastic. I havent played this version before.

Some of us like exploring. As nice as the NES version is - It IS A BADASS GAME, mind You - for me the MSX 2 version is better, just because of the maze-like characteristics.

Surprised to see this version came after the original Castlevania in Japan.
Castlevania made the Stop Watch stop working on bosses after the first few seemingly because it trivialized challenge yet in the MSX version the Hourglass works on Dracula, showing just how easy he becomes.

but yea try it on death or dracula and you're screwed

on the msx version there are no one ups even through score accumulation. you just got 3 lives. if you can make it to dracula on the MSX you deserve to kill him with the hourglass.

Hmmmm you can just feel the lack of scrolling with this machine, kind of a game breaker for this kind of gameplay

The MSX 2 standard has smooth scrolling by default. Konami decided not to implement It, doing a maze/exploration kind of gameplay instead.
Still, It is a major kickass game if one asks me.
