Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is the only game in the series in which there are two characters per kart: one to use items, and one to drive.

While the Special Items are cool for the most part, the execution for some of them is less than stellar. The Bob-omb is the only Special Item introduced in Double Dash to return in all future Mario Kart installments as a regular item. Not counting Tour, none of the Special Items introduced in this game have come back in any future installment.

They're executed the way they are because they wanted to give you a reason to pick other characters that isn't just stats.
You can't say that about any other mario kart

I mean technically Mario’s special made it in Mario kart 7 and 8 as a fire flower

@@RhythmicHalo I can't believe it took until Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo to add the Fire Flower. I feel like it should have been introduced in DS instead of that godawful Blooper item. Seriously, the Blooper is one of the worst items they've ever added to the series, and I hope it gets removed in a later installment. It does jack squat in some games like Wii, the ink can simply be removed by just using a booster or entering the water (which is a problem considering most tracks have boost panels and some tracks even have water), it disproportionately punishes new players while doing barely anything to experienced players, and it's only obtainable in middle to back of the pack positions where you should be getting something powerful.

It’s also kinda ridiculous how Nintendo first added the golden mushroom as a normal item, changed it to toad and toadette’s special, and then changed back to a normal item

@@RhythmicHalo They should have given Toad and Toadette the Poison Mushroom as their special item instead of the Golden Mushroom.
