Pull start snatches back on Honda pressure washer

- I bought a Honda pressure washer from a guy who said the pull start snatches out of your hand when you try to crank it. He was right! I tear into it and I was surprised when I found out what the problem was. Watch part 2 to see if we got.it worked out.
• Pull start snatches ba...
Good video I have two of them given to me. About to fix them both! Most people don;t know this but you are supposed to start the pressure washer with your finger on the trigger. This helps to keep the pressure from building up in the washer. You can pull the cord with one hand very easily. When you continue to pull the cord with pressure in the washer it will eventually hydro lock and then lock up causing all kinds of problems. Turn the water on, keep you hand on the gun trigger to release the pressure and you won't have this problem in the future. A machine used correctly will run a long time with regular servicing!
Our shop pressure washer has zip ties with wide open all the time
7 years old and working great
I placed a bottle of Gatorade in the pistol handle to hold the trigger open when pulling the cord! Works well!
Good idea.
Its very common that those rocker arms crack, seen that before. Yeah, the stud for the coil could have been tightened with a crescent wrench. I think you ment that at the end as well as how you used the paper. I could tell you were rushing. FYI Honda suggests replacing the valve cover as they know they get bent removing them. Rather than using a thicker metal, they went cheap on those. I use a heat gun on them first to make it easier to remove them. Generally when that cover has been removed more than twice, its no good any ways. I actually keep one extra handy because I hate waiting. I also keep a couple valve arms in my supplies because the cracked arm is common on those. I hate waiting on parts.
Thanks for watching! The heat gun is an awesome idea. Never thought of that. I'll definitely try that next time. For the cost of the parts, you're right. It makes sense to have some sitting around. It's generally not an issue for me because with work, it always takes me a week to do something that should take 2 hours. I appreciate the feedback.
Yup mine had a cracked rocker arm👌
I’m little shop and we keep two sets and 10 gasket plus 4 gears for sweet honda
My wife was so pissed at an old lawn mower once. She demanded a new electric start mower and we took the old one and used it for target practice!
Oh the rage against our machines!!
I was that way about the mower in the last video I posted. I've never felt more defeated by a machine in my life.
The zip tie is not as visual as say a long screwdriver or a 6" 3/8" extension. So you know how much easier it is being that this is a video watching a screwdriver or an extension going up and down so you can demonstrate the piston more visually being at the top of the stroke.
The cam wheel has marks to show top dead center.
I just saw a day old youtube video saying Honda have recalled 400,000 motors used in mowers and pressure washers!
Makes sense. I had several comments on this video saying that was a pretty common problem on the Honda motors.
Thank you Average Joe's! I found the same rocker arm cracked. I was about to throw this pressure washer away. Best regards!
No problem. I'm glad it helped you!
I believe a heat torch would have been appropriate there
I had a pressure washer given to me for free. It was winter. The guy thought the engine was seized up or blown up since it wouldn't turn no matter how hard he tried. After monkeying around with it for a while and not finding anything wrong, it turned out there was still water in the pump below and it was frozen solid. After I thawed it out, it fired right up.
That's awesome. We rarely have that problem here. Maybe a couple days a year that drop below freezing.
@@AverageJoes4u Well I am in Minnesota USA so the cold is normal for many months.
I'm originally from Alaska but live in South Carolina now. Gotta say, I don't miss the cold.
Why cant anybody ever give me something like that for free. Dont have much use for a snowblower, living in East Texas and all but would take a 360 mower, a side by side, 60- 80 gal air compressor or even a pressure washer ..hint hint
Lol. I hear ya. If you wanna make the drive, I have several solid push mowers. I'll hook you up brother.
The way to fasten that coil that works for me is to put in that first bolt loosely, stick in the business card and turn the flywheel until the coil lines-up with the magnet on the fw. The coil is then pulled towards the fw and I thighen that first bolt, turn the va past the magnet, pull out the card and put the cover back on along with that front bolt that screws in that second coil hole. Bingo !
That would have been much easier. Appreciate the info.
Thanks ! I repaired my power washer and it starts like a dream
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
This had to be the most painful repair job ever!
the longer I watched, the worse it got.
It was certainly painful to watch
Why not use a longer paper to reach across both legs of the coil to get the gaps the same. Tighten both bolts before putting the cover on.
I agree. I've seen it done a million different ways. I've always been of the opinion, if it still has fire, nailed it! Lol
I appreciated your determined (and successful!) effort to get that rocker cover off. I'd like to see you get out a stuck emulsion tube, cos the only vids I've seen has been where it plops down easy even if with a slight encouragement from above using a small Allan key as a lever. I've put my little used carb in a sonic bath of water, washing up liquid and vinegar for 20mins at 50° of course with plenty of carb cleaner spray before and after, and it is STUCK. I can get a cleaner wire to poke through to the top but those multiple side holes need examining. I've also seen plenty of people shrug and say, if it's stuck, leave it, it doesn't matter. Right.
Yeah. To be honest, up until the last video of the generator, I've never had a tube that wasn't frozen in and it might be a coincidence but that was a Tecumseh. I always leave them in and hope for the best. It usually works out okay.
John, Very light heat, then PB Blaster, then light shock (through a short full diameter dowel rod) with the smallest ball peen hammer you own. Breaks loose the Brass / Aluminum oxidation, lubes the contact surfaces a little and Life is Good. BUT - if life throws you a sucker punch get a 3 " drywall screw and gently, gently screw it into the 'do nothing' large end of the tube and carefully use it like an easy out. Leaving the uncleaned tube in is the wimpy choice of the irresolute --- and fixes nothing.
Thanks for the detailed inspection and diagnosis. Appreciate that! Subscribed! I have a GCV190 on a Ryobi pressure washer that I'm about to open up the same and see what I find. First time I've experienced this. Neat to see all the potential issues... including a timing belt off. Liked, subscribed and comment feed.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully your problem will be an easy one to fix. Good luck,
@@AverageJoes4u Logic, though I know what you mean... luck on some days seems with time and resources. Currently last left off wondering if I can see the key on the shaft without removing. Definitely need a flashlight to look down into better since isn't like the B&S's I'm used to working with to verify key isn't sheered. Guessing will be a lash or rocker arm issue. Kind of thinking if a rocker arm issue... I'll weld to repair for some reason... I guess since I just got the EG3500 running. Not quite there yet... though valve cover removal will be next once I grease the metal to keep the rust at bay. Once I get the video up... I'll link your video as well in the description.
@@jafinch78 I was able to see enough of the key to tell it wasn't broken. My next thought after that was the valves were off. Even after trying to adjust the valve and still having a ton of slop, I still didn't put it together. I almost missed it. Just happened to catch the light just right and I saw the crack. Never thought about welding it. If I'm not mistaken, I ordered a new Honda rocker for like $8. Maybe you'll get lucky and the lash is off. One can hope right. Lol. Also, I appreciate the link. I'll be checking out your channel shortly.
@@AverageJoes4u Thanks again for the insight. Wound up being the exhaust rocker arm cracked almost all the way through and does look like on the bottom/engine side. I'm debating the welding now that appears to maybe be a cadmium coated part... so not thrilled about welding around that. Also, I was wondering like say if intentionally designed to be the weak point like a key is designed so to prevent the valve from having issues as well as the cheaper material cam... so basically is an easier part to replace for a repair. I'll check around tomorrow to see who has what and if nothing... I might still weld. Give er a few as I'm just uploading the series of videos regarding without editing since a little busy at the moment with chores.
@@jafinch78 no worries. Glad you got it figured out.
At 12:26 I'm going to say the issue is more likely with the valves or rockers.
You're dead on sir. I've actually never had this happen before and I almost missed it. I only caught it because the valve was still super sloppy after I tried adjusting it.
@@AverageJoes4u I sow the cracked Rocker after the valve cover came off as mentioned by Rick above. Seen this exact issue on another video. But thanks for your sharing.
That was a first for me. I almost missed it.
I've seen some other videos on these gcv190s with the same problem. I am working on a Simpson 3000psi pressure washer with gcv190.
I thought it was hydro locked with fuel.
After repairing the recoil I tried to start it after I got the water hooked up and it nearly ripped my hand off.
So I checked the valves and compression release and they were ok so I rebuilt the carburetor, I tried it again and it pull the recoil rope right out of the handle .
So a call to a couple places and to Honda and apparently the compression release mechanism are defective on many of these gcv engines.
I have had two of these that are this way and now Honda says these compression release are about two months out because they come from China
That's especially disturbing to hear now because I'm about to start a video on a gas powered air compressor with that same engine. Hopefully I don't have that problem. Have you checked on aftermarket availability?
My problem was a little simpler. The belt slipped off the cam pulley so I synchronized the belt with the pulley and reinstalled the belt. I reinstalled the cover and it's been running fine since.
That was a first for me. I almost missed it.
From what I seen the rocker arms break exhaust rocker arm breaks cracks
You are correct sir. Took me a minute to figure it out.
The Automatic compression mechanism on the cam cannot touch the rocker and leave the valve open on startup
Stuck Valve cover - a little, very carefully applied heat (watch the plastic!!) is your friend.
No brass, lead or plastic hammer? Go ahead and use your CARPENTER'S beater - but just use a short hardwood block to transmit and distribute the beating over a larger area. Little to no destruction from the CARPENTER'S beater if you do that.
In the beginning you mentioned one of the 3 things you were considering was a sheared crankshaft shear 'pin'. Lawn mower - yes - since they stop suddenly due to rocks, stumps and other 'stuff' in the grass - but probably not a pressure washer.
The Harbour Freight hose pliers were good to see - I use them ALL the time. - Joe -
You're right. I should have put some heat to it. Patience is not one of my virtues. I'm generally more of a grip it and rip it kinda guy. Lol
If you work on them you need to keep a couple of new valve covers in stock, can’t waste 45 minutes getting the cover off eather, there hell to get off most of the time and in winter i use heat gun
Not a bad idea. I didn't have one handy cause it didn't occur to me I was going to have to go in. I was almost convinced going in that it was the flywheel key.
It's funny you said that. It snatched me on the arm the same exact way. Lol
First thing I do is pull water pump with customer there and tell them to take it with them and bring it back when pickup and we will install it
Pump was pretty good on this one.
I agree but I had other local shop sued for pump damage
So I just pull the four bolts and remove it
There's videos that are a waste of time and those that help, figured out my problem in ten minutes with this one 😁
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
They must have put that window seal around that
It was definitely on there.
Compression relief spring?
Nope but it is a compression issue of sorts.
Stripped the shit outta that coil bolt
Yes. Yes I did.
Oh it FN hurts not doubt about that. Have 2 washers doing this same thing. Ran fine last summer. Bet I know why board short kid gave up on it. Haha.
Yeah. It definitely didn't tickle.
Use a heat gun to help the removal of the valve cover
Just heat every one that comes in save time
Omg! I have this same problem on mine! I was running fine then it just stopped. I try starting it and it did the same thing. Snatch the cord out my hand.
Do you own a large screwdriver? Sometimes that silicone that Honda uses is pretty tough budge
Yeah, it was definitely on there. I was trying not to bend the cover too much but my method wasn't great either. Still bent it some but I was able to get a decent seal after some light hammer work.
Rocker arms need more ribbing for strength, is all & it be a good reliable unit, shame when manufacturers cut corners:(
You're right. They're not made of much.
Except...
You never hear about the intake rocker breaking. Why is that??
ua-cam.com/video/zZz0MRqxGX8/v-deo.html
Relatively common problem with GCV 160/190s.
Don't replace that rocker without checking out my fix for valve guide contact. Otherwise, you might be replacing it again.
ua-cam.com/video/zZz0MRqxGX8/v-deo.html
You put it back together in the coil needs another screw to hold it down correctly
Not sure what you're referring to. I gave that unit to a buddy from work. He used it last weekend. Still going strong.
The front post is the second fastener to the magneto/coil
Break out the heat torch
I've got the same problem with a 8750/7000 generator hope so easy gix
I hope it goes well for you sir.
At that point right there where it wouldn't hardly come off how to take a sledgehammer to it and beat that hole in right off of it
Lmao!! If only the camera hadn't been on.
What engine is this one ???
I believe it was the 190 but couldn't swear to it.
Rocker on exhaust are usually cracked on theses engines
@@philliphall5198 to be honest, that was the first Honda I'd ever worked on.
@@AverageJoes4u I thought I heard you say you had another honda engine
@patc7198 I have had other Hondas in the past. That was the first one I had ever worked on I believe.
You need a cheap pair of hemostats to close that fuel line bud.
That's a good idea. Wouldn't be as rough on the line.
Exhaust rocker arm is cracked
Am I looking at a cracked rocker arm
It didn't snap back on you when you first attempted it because you forgot to turn the ignition on LOL
I'm kind of glad. It had me jumpy. It got me twice and it sucked equally both times. Lol.
@@AverageJoes4u lol got me about 5 times...that's why im here...thanx for video...im basically 100% im going to have the same problem.
Cheap.and fairly easy fix once you figure out what the problem is. Good luck!
Times like these, we men ask why we even have nipples.🤔
No doubt. I wasn't sure it was even still there.
That's just in case we want a "gender change" part of the parts are already there.
The exhaust rocker is broken
A little heat and the cover comes right off
its the valves on it i would say about a 5 min fix
Yep. Actually a broken rocker arm. Never had that happen before.
@@AverageJoes4u I've seen this before. I replaced the rocker arm.
It was a first for me. I almost missed it.
We will always folded the dollar in half and set the magnet to call against the dollar folded in half
Not a bad idea.
@ 6.10 I ALSO HATE those Fuel LINE CLAMPS - RETARDED DESIGN !!!!!!!!
i hate the 3 STUDS for the Fuel tank always comes out with the Nuts !
i Hate the Silastic on the Cam Cover
Same issue with my Honda Gsv190 Very hard to PULL will check the Rocker
When you Removed the Cover the Rocker Looked like was Cracked - thight it was the Old Silastic
Good Video BTW
Need a better camera position. You are between the camera and the work much of the time.
I agree sir. I'm learning as I go. That was one of my earlier videos. I'd like to think they got a little better as I went. Or maybe they didn't. Lol. Thanks for watching.
Not what I thought . does this man have any other tools , rather than using a set of pliers to do that coil stud up with , why on earth didn't he use a wrench or deep socket to do it . And a scraper would have been able to remove that cover plate . Bang , Bang , Bang goes the hammer , what the hell .
I do own a few more tools but I've always been a grip it and rip it kinda guy. Thanks for watching!
34 minutes and 47 seconds of my life that i'll never get back.
@@charlesnorman7107 sorry you wasted your time. Hopefully I can do better next time and possibly live up to your expectations. Thanks for watching!
@@AverageJoes4u can't please everybody eh? Don't sweat the small stuff Joe, everyone's a critic behind a keyboard.
@@TheCrittercam001 very true sir.
This guy !
In 10 minutes screwing with this crap you can have a permanent injury to wrist, fingers arm, elbow, rotator cuff, neck, knee, hip.
And peed some! Lmfao😂
i NEVER PUT SEALER ON A VALVE COVER -------NEVER
if there is no gasket- I make one
I've seen a bunch with silicone so I just went with it.
I been using permatex silicone on valve covers for years, beats any cork or paper gaskets any day, good job Joe btw xD 👍
Use my phone to the speaker don't say half what I say
