First of all I would like to say that Shota is 200% American asking for Ranch and BBQ at Macdonald's 😂 but seems like a cool guy. Thank you for making this video Shun Chan. I can't tell you how much I related to this video even though I'm not Japanese or Asian. My family is from Mexico and even though I'm also second generation Mexican this is how it always goes when meeting my cousins who grew up in Mexico
They definitely have BBQ, but I don't know how many Japanese people order it. I would hit up McDonald's at 3am because it was closer than a Konbini and get two 15 piece McNuggets(they have old school McNuggets) with BBQ sauce. They don't sell a 20-piece in Japan.

I started out as a nurse in rural Hawaii. I had to brush up on my Japanese because the obasans had dementia and forgot how to speak pidgin and only spoke Japanese at that point. Imagine saying okole and oshiri all day.

I absolutely loved this video. I felt proud of the Japanese American guy. when he started speaking Japanese he spoke quite well for a guy who is born and raised in USA. That means his family spoke the language in the household, which is a huge thing, i know people who didn't teach the mother tongue to their children. They got along pretty well.
Shun-Chan. If you ever come to Southern California I can connect you to the JA community. I am Sansei - my grandparents came over from Hiroshima and Yamaguchi Ken over 100 years ago. I can speak some Japanese. My children are younger Yonsei but that’s because I married late. Most Japanese Americans marry outside of our race - many marry ABC’s (American Born Chinese).

@weebwacker69 - Growing up, my kids (now in their late 20’s) were the only “full JAs” they knew besides some twins. There were a number of “hapa haole” (half White), half-Chinese or other Asian, and even “quapa” (quarter Japanese) in their classes. Far fewer half-Black or half Hispanic in general. By one quarter, you can’t even tell they’re Japanese, but many will tell you! Also, JAs have dispersed from primarily JA areas such as the Gardena and Crenshaw areas. In areas that are sparsely populated by Asians, Asians tend to assimilate into the predominant group - sometimes derisively referred to as Bananas, but it’s just the way it is.
Interestingly, Shun Chan found a “Shin-Nisei” (New Second Generation) - not many of those around, thus his Japanese is very good. By third generation, the Japanese language goes by the wayside. The Shin Nisei have not experienced the traumas of interment camp during WW2 and have come to America when there was much more acceptance of Japanese people and indeed many Americans are now Japanophiles. Not so even a few decades ago when Sanseis would be ridiculed for bringing rice balls for lunch instead of sandwiches, and comedians made fun of Japanese products as being inferior. I remember the look of horror and “EWWWW!” from other kids when I said I ate raw fish! Asian food was considered so exotic and not in a good way. Now Americans are more into sushi than I am.
The descendants of those Japanese who moved during the Meiji era will slowly disappear- that’s my take.

@@beezelsub - Do I consider out-marrying to be a good thing? I don’t place a good/bad value on it one way or the other, it just is. For my parent’s generation it would have been a bad thing.
Yes I consider the hapas to be JAs. Some have mothers from Japan so they are quite Japanesy, more so than Yonsei or Gosei or even some Sansei.
My nieces and nephews are almost all mixed and they don’t relate to their Japanese side at all! Much of it could depend on where you grew up and how much your parents made an effort to introduce you to the JA culture/identity and to an extent how Asian you look.
Interestingly my kids have remarked many hapas have a hard time dealing with identity issues.
Ever met anyone past yonsei? I'm a yonsei myself and I know one guy who's a gosei, he married an abc girl though so I guess it stops there. I'm kinda hoping I could continue my chain with another ja but I noticed I've only ever gotten together with abc girls. Maybe it's inevitable in this generation haha.

This was great! I think the part about him using boku vs ore was interesting, and something a lot of first or second gen kids can relate to! If you only ever speak to your family in a language, you probably miss out on some of the other social factors that affect how you speak.
shun is quickly becoming my favorite non-american japanese american. as an american-chinese kid I really feel like i relate to shotas cultural differences in his native country (cuz thats how i feel anytime i go back to my family in taiwan). it would be fun to compare the 帰国子女 experiences across different cultures

I find it funny that most of my friends (who are sansei like me) end up dating other japanese descendants, not white guys. There's such a big community here in São Paulo.

It's interesting seeing the sitting posture between the two at 3:37. Shota has a more relaxed and I guess masculine spread out seating position while Shun has a crossed straight up posture
also at 5:35 even though they're walking at the same pace you can see Shota's body going left-right with each stride while Shun keeps his torso centered

I worked at a Japanese company once and the company CEO looked, talked, and moved like he was from some yakuza movie. The rest of the male Japanese staff (and female, for sure) would make themselves look small and neat, like they were trying not to take up space and just wanted to look inconspicuous. But not the CEO - he was very masculine in posture, even did the Japanese bow with his arms crossed (very memorable). There's definitely a cultural significance there.
I talked to a Japanese person and they told me they knew I was American cuz I "walked big" lol.

I’m hafu, Nihon to Americagin. Lived in Tokyo in the 80s and 90s and now live in Seattle. I went to an English speaking International school in Tokyo and everyone at school spoke Japlish, (Mixing English and Japanese in the same sentences). It was natsukashi to hear him speak English and Japanese in the same sentence.
The word Japlish would not be something us Sansei would like to hear. Any word with Jap in it or alone is considered derogatory to us. Do not use that word in the US!

The word “keigo (敬語)” generally means honorific or “respectful Japanese.” It is one of the three general levels of politeness used in Japanese speech, namely: colloquial, polite, and honorific. It means speaking very humbly of yourself and addressing the other person formally with the utmost respect and esteem.
And it's a big pain in the ass that interferes with you getting to matters at hand and communicating efficiently.

This was a really interesting video to see, considering that I am half American and half Japanese, who grew up in the US and just moved to Japan 6 months ago (I'm 16). I definitely do like both places, but what I found really funny in this video was that, no matter where you grew up, we men like to talk about vulgar things and make sexual jokes. 😂😂

Awesome video, Shun! It’s hard to find these kind of videos that interview Japanese Americans living in Japan. I’m also Japanese American. I’m actually an issei (1st generation) technically speaking. I was born in Toda, in Saitama Prefecture, adopted and raised in Hawaii. I grew up similarly to someone who is haafu because my adopted parents are Japanese American (sansei 3rd generation) and Portuguese American. I still live in Hawaii currently, but definitely want to go back to Japan to live and work there for a while perhaps teaching English to start with. All the while also learning more and more Japanese. I’ve studied Japanese for a long time now, but am still not too good with it speaking wise. I went back to Japan for the first time 10 years ago and again most recently in 2017. I miss Japan so much. Anyways, thank you for the video, I really enjoyed it!

What an endearing meet up. I am curious as to why "Western girls" are framed as White girls only. Have you ever imagined yourself and/or has your new friend Shota/Shoda dating "Western girls" who are not White/Caucasian?
I wouldn't judge this. Depending on where Shota grew up he might have been the literal only non-white person. I had an AA friend who grew up in Washington state and she said there were never more than 2 black kids in the class. Her mind was blown when she went to the south that you could walk down and street and casually see a black person. But not like one, a great many.
