When I was in kindergarten we had a caterpillar as a class pet named Sunny. Our teacher taught us about how caterpillar turned into butterflies. So when Sunny finally went through their metamorphosis, we took them and let them look go. I remember them flying off and all us kids waving , saying goodbye, and good luck. Very wholesome and A+ class pet

You'd think schools (being a place of education) would actually do their research on proper animal care for whatever they have as a class pet, and have a desire to teach children on how to look after certain animals the right way. Of course not all schools are like that, but the fact that there are schools that just lazily slap a crappy habitat with a small animal(s) down and call it a day, yeah, really says a lot about their character. The public school I went to before homeschooling had a fish tank, and one of their fish died in a horrible way, the fish got stuck in something mechanical in the tank, I can't remember what it was exactly but poor fish, it was a pretty yellow tropical one, and my favorite out of the ones they had. I drew a picture of him during art class once.

When I was in school our teacher started a new project where we got twelve fertilised duck eggs, incubated them and raised them for a bit, it was awesome 😊 Five hatched, two of these sadly died (they were just the runts of the litter, it wasn’t because of inadequate care or anything, I think the eggs were just cheap) We kept the three healthy ones for a few weeks and then took them to a duck farm. It taught us lots of things about farming animals, coping with death, life cycles etc. Sometimes school ‘pets’ can be educational ☺️

One of the teachers at my school has a bearded dragon enclosure in their room! The actual tank is built into the wall, so you can see it from the classroom AND the hallway. The setup seems really good, and the tank is big, but I’m not sure if the tank being in the wall could stress them out at all.

Okay Soda, I’m about to make your day. My 5th grade science teacher had a few fish in a large tank with a filter and air pump and stuff. The tank was clean and didn’t have rainbow gravel or anything horrible like that, and it had some live plants. Funnily enough, that was my only class pet experience. I sat near the tank, so I got to watch them swim around. 😄

When I was in high school, they had a farm which was technically owned by the school but all the animals were owned by the man who cared for the animals full time. For a kid like me, who really struggled even being in school because I got really overwhelmed, it was a lifesaver. If done right, I really believe animals can do lots of good in schools.

We never really had class pets at the schools I attended, however when I was 8yo, our teacher had a working beehive* set up so we could see the behaviour and workings of the bees.
Mr Spenser was an apiarist and the hive was behind glass with an exit for the bees to venture out.
It was well tended and fascinating to watch.
*It was probably a single frame from a typical apiary.

The tank was very bright ligthed and the white one (named Milco) was so lethargic when my gf first got them, wouldn't really eat, wouldn't move. Now she's doing so much better! 3:02 I suspect the water may be red because of the dyed rocks on the bottom of the tank.
Once, back when I owned a betta, I bought some pretty looking red gravel in a pet store, mind you, so it should be safe to put in the water, right? I thought would match his color (because he was a really nice, red Siamese betta). But like a day or two after I put the gravel in the tank, the water turned red, so I immediately threw this awful gravel away, because I don't even want to know what kind of dye was used for this and what my poor fish had to literally breathe in. I hope he forgave me for this....

I had a science teacher that had an AMAZING set up for fish. And she had Goldfish and they lasted years living in the school. Then in the summer she would take them home with her and set them up there.
Everytime I went in her classroom or walked by it I could look right into the classroom and see the tanks. I don't ever believe I seen those tanks like filthy dirty either. Like this teacher took super good care of the fish and had a super nice set up tank and lots of room because she had a few Goldfish. Then on her desk she housed a Betta and his tank was never dirt or anything like that either. She also had a pet turtle for a while, but gave him a new home because she needed more counter space for kids/projects. But even the Turtles tank was clean, he had a place to dry off, proper lighting, heat lamp, everything. Like she was an amazing teacher. And if you asked her advice she gave you wonderful advice for how to take care of fish and turtles.
PLus I personally feel happier in a classroom when there's a fish tank present. Because I LOVE watching fish swim and it calms me down. It's just peaceful to have other life form in a classroom. Well back when I was in school anyway. Lol.

I always see Axolotle aquariums and they're always empty with just sand or gravel or something with a filter in there to give oxygen in the tank. They are bottom-dwelling, meaning they spend most of their time on the bottom of the tank. However, it depends on the axolotl, my ax Mochi loves swimming up to the top and resting on a leaf. Despite the fact that they need space, they need a hide like a reptile, and plants for coverage. They can get anxious when they don’t have any cover and can’t hide. But other than that they do need plenty of space to roam, and they eat anything around them that moves. If the plant isn’t moving, they usually won’t eat it.

In the wild Axolotls are not surrounded only by rocks double the size of their heads. The naturally live on sand, mud small and big rocks all together. They have survived thousands of years just fine. The issue is that Axolotls ARE NOT MEANT TO BE PETS! So, it messes with their head and then they eat what they normally wouldn't. Also, Axolotls NEED some gravel in their stomachs to help them digest their food.

At my old highschool, we had a turtle tank and it was done pretty well actually. It was a really big tank and had lots of room to swim and bask under the lamps.
There was a big area across from it that was an indoor garden with a lot of tropical plants and a fake little pond that they kept koi fish in
It was a little small for 5-6 koi but, they did the best they could to keep it clean and as far as I know they never had any outbreaks or deaths since it was put in, so it was nice.
I liked watching them water the plants, the fish would come up to try to bite at the water that 'rained' on the surface thinking it would be food.
Sadly I think they removed the fish because idiot teenagers kept throwing coins in like a wishing well, so now it's just a decorative pond. But the turtles are still there!

2:22 I mean, I’m pretty sure you can do that, just for short periods of time. They are amphibians after all, and isn’t part of the definition that they can be on land and water for a good amount of time? Technically fish can too, but for shorter amounts of time than amphibians. Axolotls would be in between the amount with fish and the amount with say a frog which is on land more often. This is all from what I know I could be wrong.

His name was Homer and he had a partner named Marge who had to sadly be rehomed due to her being an amazing escape artist and she'd started fighting with Homer. Everyday us students had to feed him and take him out to bask/run on the school oval for 15-30 mins. Our teacher made sure to show us all how to pick him up properly aka not by the shell. He had a bask though I don't remember ever seeing him use it. She always kept the tank super clean, never saw it dirty. She always watched us pick him up and if we didn't do it right she'd remind us and show us how to pick him up without hurting him, usually though who didn't pick him up right were worried he'd hurt them even though he never hurt anyone on purpose. Loved having him in class and getting to interact with him and learn about him

I have a friend who keeps 2 red eared sliders around that size in a plastic bucket with no filtration and no lamp, it's only because of the window sunlight that they didn't get metabolic bone disease and I tried addressing it several times but excuses on top of excuses and he doesn't want to rehome them either, I tried, but I can't do more since we live in different countries now, i would have taken them myself otherwise

Isn't that just her natural hair color? She's been growing it out and her roots are always the same color. But I'm not blond so I don't know if your hair color changes depending on what shampoo you use, does it? /gen

The only thing I see wrong with Boise aquarium's Axolotyl display is the lack of hiding places for the Axolotyl... Other than that, the rocks aren't too small and overall it looks very clean... Oh and its pronounced "Boy-zee" and its the capitol of the state of Idaho

In kindergarten we had a rabbit and the teacher would ask kids to keep him during holidays and i would be the one to take him most of the time because he liked being at my house, we would leave the cage opened most of the time and he even became friend with my cat. Yes, they would genuinely play together and run around the house :)

My aunt had a tank for tropical fish with mostly coral and a proper set up so she looked like she knew what fish needed. But she gets her kid a guppy (I think. This was a while ago so I don’t remember) and just throws it in a bowl with shitty gravel and one fake plant

When I got my axolotl me and my family didn't know that axolotls couldn't go with fish so we put my Axolotl in with the goldfish that we had in the next morning my dad looked for the Goldfish and we couldn't find it and we knew it was that the axolotl ate it

Axolotls are adorable, the breeder I got my leopard gecko from also sells axolotls really cheap, though I don’t know way to much about them, they looked really healthy, one of his had a 40 gallon to itself and at least a 100 gallon tank long holding his adult axolotls. I love aquatic animals but I don’t think I could manage to keep fish happy and healthy, I’ve only really ever kept beta fsh and I sadly had no experience like any child in a pet store
The last fish I had my mom had gotten a little bit of a bigger tank (it was probably only like a 2 gallon) but it did have a filter. I regret not doing research on them but since then I haven’t kept any fish, I know how I am and I won’t be willing to do weekly water changes. They look gorgeous but things most people sadly don’t realize is just because it’s bright and colourful doesn’t mean it’s happy and healthy.
I’ll stick to reptiles but I will always admire people who really care for their fish

When we first got our turtle (he was very small) we had a tank that was only a bit bigger then that. We did get a bigger take for them especially because we all of a sudden got 3 more, the tank was very much bigger and we set up a bucket full of sand for them and some rocks that they could sit on. We also had a fake alligator skull that sadly one of the turtles got stuck and drowned but after that we took it out and the other three are now happy and living in a large kitty pool in a fenced area around our house :) we do plan on making a actual pond for them especially if they get bigger (idk if they will but if anyone is curious they’re red eared sliders)

I had a science teacher in middle school who had snakes, turtles, a guinea pig, and a rat. Both years that I was in the class, we couldn't see through the glass of 1 of the snakes, and it was behind piles of books.... The water in the turtle tank was green, they had a platform, but there where 3 or 4 turntles and it was disgusting, and was never cleaned through my 2 years with her....

8:53 my chem teacher didn’t know how to teach for shit, but this man’s tank was amazing. it didn’t have a lot of plants but it was always clean and had amazing water parameters and i gave him some of my baby guppies and he had neon tetras in there as well. there were about 12 of my guppies and 6 tetras and it was literally like 60 gallons. it doesn’t sound that amazing but it was honestly gorgeous. then just downstairs there was a 200 gal pool thing? but it had a bunch of HUGE goldfish and a koi and i don’t think they ever cleaned it… wasn’t in that class but i saw it when the door was open…

In elementary school, the grade 7 class had this huuuge wooden framed cage with chicken wire that had an iguana in it. Thing was so aggressive, you’d be close to the “enclosure” and it would just charge at you. That’s the only interaction I’ve had with an iguana, so I don’t know if that’s normal behaviour for them but I doubt that set up was good for it… (this was 20+ years ago)
