I’d correct you by saying that Angels literally saved Robbie’s career as the first album flopped completely until Angels was played on radio. I’ve seen him live in Pretoria back in the noughties and he’s an outstanding showman and entertainer

For US people - it is really not possible to explain how huge this song is in the rest of the world. Entire pubs, arenas and stadiums of people will all scream this chorus at sports games. I was at Octoberfest last year and entire huge tents (1000s of people in those “tents” all know all the words of this song and yelled the chorus). The theme holding all these instances together is, of course, alcohol!

Robbie was in a boyband , Take That in the 90s , they sold millions , he left the band , recorded a solo album that had a couple of minor hits , the record company were going to pull the plug , but decided to release this single , it went stratospheric in Europe , selling over a million in the UK , subsequent albums went platinum , his concerts were filmed including a 3 night special where he played to over 375, 000 crazed fans at Knebworth , worth a look at . Tunes worth a listen are ...Rock D J , Feel , Let me entertain you ,
He's a good guy , had his share of troubles well documented , he rejoined Take That for an album and tour in the early 2010s ..He has sold a lot of records .. Funny guy too , likes the crooners , did an album of classics .. Well worth exploring .

Some of us in the US were listening to Robbie 🙋‍♀
I distinctly remember seeing Rock DJ on MTV's TLC...which means it had to be getting votes...
For my guess as to why his album sales were lackluster in the US? Well...the high school and college kids who were listening to him were probably downloading his singles from iTunes (or Napster or LimeWire for "free" 😇)...
While I don't remember buying the full albums as CDs, I know I had Angels, Better Man, Rock DJ, Feel, Mandalay, Let Love Be Your Energy, and perhaps a few others on my first iPod back in the early 2000s.

The UK's Robbie Williams is one of the biggest popstars on the planet. It's cool y'all are getting around to him. He started out with the 90s boy-band Take That. They only had one US hit "Back for Good" (1995/US#7), but it was phenomenal. And while it cracked the US Top10 it went to #1 in over 30 countries. He was the first to leave the band and pursue a solo career, and he found immediate success. Teaming up with songwriter Guy Chambers (formerly of World Party) his music appealed almost as much to Indie hipsters as it did to the Pop masses. Like any popstar worth his salt, his style changes all the time. He's done power ballads like "Angels", "Strong", and "She's the One" (a World Party cover), Indie Dance ("Millennium" "Rock DJ"), Vocal Pop/Crooner ("Road to Mandalay" and "Somethin' Stupid" with Nicole Kidman), and Rock ("Let Me Entertain You" and "Kids" with Kylie Minogue). And that's just his first couple of years out as a solo artist. He's still going strong.

LOL. Who can forget "Rudebox"? @@lordhoot1 But I only listed his earliest stuff from his first ten years in the spotlight. "Rudebox" was from 2006, I think. I was an Indie Dance DJ in the US at the time, and Robbie was playing in the whole French Electro sandbox of Justice, Mr. Oizo, and Daft Punk right that minute, so "Rudebox" was a very hip track to dance to at the time. But as we all know, some of those lyrics were always a little cringe and simply haven't aged well. Joking about the Special Olympics was always a bit cheap, even for a joker like Williams. And the fat-shaming line has aged like milk, as well. But the beat? It slaps HARD.

Definitely not as well known here in the states, but he’s a star basically everywhere else! Some other great songs of his to check out are “Feel” , “She’s the One”, “Supreme”, and “Better Man”. His career is pretty varied, he even made a few albums of classic songs like “My Way”, “One For My Baby”, and “Something Stupid”(a duet with Nichole Kidman!)
Also, still putting in a plug for the band Take That, Robbie started off with them in the late eighties when he was 16, went solo in the mid nineties, and re-joined them for an album in 2010. “Back For Good” was their only big U.S. hit, but they’re a huge success everywhere else. He started in the boyband Take That in 1990.They ruled the charts until they split up in the mid 90s: three multiple platinum albums, topping the charts in several countries as well as eight no.1 hits in the UK. Overall, Take That sold around 35 million records and has 164 platinum, 45 gold and 12 silver certified record. Then Robbie went solo and eclipsed his success with Take That. So far, he has sold 77 million records, has released 14 no.1 albums and 10 no. 1 singles. He has 548 platinum certifications world wide as a solo artist. He has collaborated with the Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and even made a single with Nicole Kidman (a cover of Frank and Nancy Sinatra's "Something Stupid"). This song is about his mum, he was part of the boyband Take That and had lots of well documented "issues" and this song is about his mum always being there. Everyone in the UK knows all the words to this song, it's just one of those songs everyone knows. He is definitely an artist that is worth reacting to more he has some great songs.

Songs that I recommend by him are: "Millennium", "Rock DJ", "She's The One", "Let Me Entertain You", "Lazy Days", "Come Undone", he did two duets "Something Stupid" with Nicole Kidman which was a cover of the hit by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, and "Kids" with Kylie Minogue. There are many others by him but these are good ones to start with.

I didn't fly to England to hear the audience, LOL. I wish he would still join in so we can hear his voice along with the audience. But he is the most masterful entertainer. Robbie Williams went from boyband teen heart-throb, to serious artist and star, to being something of a parody of himself, but during the period he was a serious star he had a massive hit in the UK with this. In the late 90s you couldn't go anywhere without hearing this track, and it even became a major popular song request for funerals and other major life events, and a huge karaoke song.
This will probably remain his most enduring hit, which he will be most remembered for.

Since you love crooners, you should check out Robbie's swing albums. The first one , Swing when you're Winning , featured Sinatra's own pianist (Bill Miller). Incidentally, the pianist loved Robbie's renditions so much that he played some of the tracks to Sinatra's children and got their OK to use a track of O´Blue Eyes on the album. The duet is "It was a Very Good Year", one of my all-time Sinatra favourites. Another highlight is Robbie's duet with Nicole Kidman, Somethin' Stupid- which you've already featured in your channel in its original version.
