An easy way to remember it: Open-ended mutual funds behave like regular investment funds (i.e. hedge fund, private equity) Close-ended mutual funds behave like actively managed ETFs (AUM remains the same, thus the value of the close-ended fund depends solely on the performance of the underlying assets)
As per sebi a maximum of 20% of AUM can be borrowed by open ended fund as well in case of emergency. The same was being done by some Franklin debt fund to meet redemption pressure
Thanks for the descriptive video. How to know the duration of any specific close-ended funds? And will the close-ended fund will automatically be redeemed after the duration is over?
Que 1.If anyone is starting SIP for XYZ mutual fund(for eg) then it will be in open ended or close ended??? 2.Whether any type of mutual fund (open or close) Deduction under 80C can be availed under both the funds??
very well xplained but i have few doubts...1) u said that close-ended fund has lock-in period so how can one trade on stock exchange?...2)since close-ended funds don't accept offers after NFO and are subject to less change then how come their commission is high? Ty in advance
1) All closed ended funds have to list themselves on exchange. They can be traded but the problem is liquidity is very very low. 2) Commission is high because their is higher marketing cost on them.
In case of closed ended fund you mentioned that there is no exit option and if we want to exit from the fund it can be done through exchange. Does this mean that under this scheme mutual funds issues it's own unit and get it listed on a stock exchange and this is where the investors can practise exit option given market demand and supply factor? Basically i am unable to understand which units gets listed? t would be benevolent if you answer my query. Could you please explain here unit=shares or something else?
@yadnya.. For closed ended funds, what if the equity market is highly stressed at the end of maturity of the scheme. Is it becomes necessary to sell at maturity with huge loss or fund manager wait till market to go up.

I think SIP is possible on Closed end funds because they are traded on exchanges
They are traded on exchanges but with very low liquidity. It is tough to sell or buy them there.
