Remember seeing this on Rage in ' 92 in my first ever share house off Ipswich Rd in Annerley. $40pw for a room, parties every weekend, 4ZZZ collective, those were the days.
There's an amazing trance-like quality to this song. It's like being in somebody else's compelling dream. It's of it's time, yet timeless. How do you write and arrange music that simmers just below rage and still echoes with love and passion and humid summer air? Keupper did, it's an elegant arrangement with the restrained execution of a professional artist and I marvel at it's brilliance every time I hear it. And I know that I'll be hearing it for days. It's so bloody resonant!
That is beautifullly expressed, presumably inspired by the genius of the music- only can happen in Australia, the home of the songlines that stretch back through our beautiful indigenous people
Speaks to a time in my 20s "and what they said in all that time was true there were no good old days as such" came one like an epiphany especially as a working class intellectual refugee
I have been listening to this type of music since I was 15 years of age I'm now 52 love the alternative music that came out in the 80s 90s even the 70s and 60's the music scene was so much better back then and you're right where did time go
Nice we caught the end of him playing Byron about 5 years ago,,, very intimate setting,,, my mate was stoked afterwards he met him (I told him to just go up to him),,, he was chill as,,, I just checked out his guitars and no one told me off lol 😆
As of 16/2/2020 there were 82 brain dead dickheads who did not like this song, possibly the best song ever written by an AMAZINGLY talented man. THANK YOU Ed we love this, your are remarkable.
if we can have the Go Between bridge in Brisbane, in honour of the Go Betweens (NO complaints there), then Ed Kuepper deserves a freeway or at least a suburb - Kueppers Plains (pun intended, for those of you who don't know brisbane Coopers Plains is not far from Ed's childhood zone) sounds good.
He was in one of the first punk bands ever, called The Saints”, in Australia, and is highly respected in Germany where he lived (lives?) for a long time. Britain recognized The Saints as ground-breaking .
I've seen him play live twice. Both instances were in fairly intimate settings. He was only accompanied a drummer and he is an intense guitar player and his sets are intense. He just belts out all these original songs, many of them on a steel string guitar. What he does is takes the listener on a journey into his mind. He is an artist not for the casual listener but even so he can draw you in mid set. I find to get the most out of these types of musician it is better to be familiar with their material to better appreciate the live. He really is an excellent live performer and very approachable. We had a chat after the show for ages - perhaps 45mins and it was the first time I'd seen him (not that two occasions is much LOL. I was introduced to him by a New Yorker who was visiting Melbourne (Australia) and I was hooked. We saw him at a pub and there were only about 10 people there on a Monday night. That was in 1994 and by '94 he was already getting on to be a well known performer for about 15-20 years. I came to him late.
Honeyy fools gold is a deserved album in Australia's top 100 of all time , just like l' m stranded with the saints led by a legend aswell in Chris Bailey may he rest in peace
Apart from memories flooding back this reminds me that there is only 2 degrees of separation in Brisvegas. Eds brother spent some time in the same classroom as me at high school (now long gone) and the list goes on.
Saw Ed do this at the Basement last week - just Ed, his guitar, and Mark Dawson on drums. Astonishing. Sounded almost exactly like this studio version, but, incredibly, better. How does he do it? Ed is a musical genius. Oh, and he was funny and humble as well. Knockout show. If you get a chance to see Ed - regardless of who he's playing with, what he's playing, or the venue - just go.One day we will realise he is our Dylan, or hendrix, or.....maybe just our Ed :-)
Currently watching this clip in a hotel in Kao Lak Thailand . Have seen it played live at the Gov Hindmarsh hotel about 20 years ago and it still sounds great.
This should be voted the best song ever Killer riff great voice He should be incredibly rich Another Aus that doesn't get the complete recognition I hope in a hundred years they go wow (this song)
I’ve had the “I was drawn to it against my wishes, ugly memories of the war.” lyrics in my head for months now then finally I remembered who sang them. Ed Fucking Kuepper!!! Great song.
The Saints are great even when they have a bad day. CHRIS BAILEY will be recognized after his light goes off. Love the band, imagine, growing up in Yugoslavia, comming in a book shop and there is ETERNALLY YOURS
Yes it started when i was cleaning dishes And the phone rang in the hall I was drawn to it against my wishes Ugly memories of the war I didn’t count on mass destruction When i saw you It was the way i made you feel I hadn’t seen such mass destruction ‘til i saw you Was the way i made you feel Well we went to town past the old café That existed to service the highway And what they said for all those years There never were good old days as such I didn’t count on mass destruction When i saw you It was the way i made you feel I hadn’t seen such mass destruction ‘til i saw you Was the way i made you feel
As for the landscape in the video, the first minute shows the cokemaking facilities in Port Kembla steelworks, in those days perhaps the largest industrial plant in Southern Hemisphere. Then there is a tall cylinder (one of two) holding the reserve gas supply for the steelworks. A very tall chimney seen between weatherboard houses belonged to the copper smelter that changed many hands (I remember it under the name Southern Copper). The smelter is gone, and the chimney too. The orange flame is from the burning of off-gas in the steelmaking plant. The derelict suburb is most likely Port Kembla or its surrounds.
I saw Ed Kuepper perform this song at a party last weekend in Brisbane. This song is just magical, but the first time I actually knew of it was in 1999 when Jimmy Little covered it and it got a lot of radio airplay at the time.
Love Ed. I find he went through a bit of a self indulgent period seeing him live several times years ago. I left one gig. Kinda weird. It might have mean just me but I love all his earlier albums. Thank goodness you can now get most of it on streaming platforms. Awesome muso and songwriter.
wow how coool is this one, not much more can be said except thank you Ed and to you NZOZ Thank You for finding and sharing all these great tracks n vids with us all a wonderful collection you do have
I get the urge to walk around the shops at Bayford St and Oxley Rd listening to this song. Maybe I will play it Dunlop Park . Well it sort suits there, doesn’t it.
good music. thanks. I lived with bands and a promoter, and met a lot of 80-90s bands. from here and overseas. great times. real acid and extc. I was living in the city and managing a cattle/pot+magic meshroom paradise. farm in the equivalent of Woodstock. be warned! the scag got me for 20 years..
Have always loved this song on the Butterfly Net CD, which would be one of my desert island discs. I don't remember seeing the video before, but it really does justice to the song.
Still priceless in 2024 . What a tune...this is what Australia really sounds like people
I ran into him in a random concert in valley mall in brisbane for free the whole town stopped had a party was beyond unbelievable
Ed kueper has being one of my music hero's for forty years . And Chris Bailey

Triple Z are good
Same here! Down the road at Red Hill though. Best fun. 😊
Slightly off topic, I remember listening to triple zed one night, everyone in their studio was punching cones 😅. Slightly juvenile but pretty funny
Quite possibly the greatest Australian song of all time ⭐️

wow! well said, exactly how i have been hearing the song the last 40 years
Actually the way you write is pretty awesome too! What I would've said if I could've found those words. Thank you 🎶
That is beautifullly expressed, presumably inspired by the genius of the music- only can happen in Australia, the home of the songlines that stretch back through our beautiful indigenous people
Agree 1000% !! Nothing flashy or pretentious about this. Just beautifully executed, hypnotic artistry, which evokes nostalgia !
live performance of Ed at the zoo in the valley just knocked my socks off! I was left tingling.
The best aussie musician, from Chile
72 years old in the year of the Coronavirus in August of 2020 and still love this song..Stay safe all you out there. 😶
Speaks to a time in my 20s "and what they said in all that time was true there were no good old days as such" came one like an epiphany especially as a working class intellectual refugee
G'day ed. Lovely track here isn't it mate ?

At 61 still loving it November 2019 😎
It's absolutely brilliant and it's an absolute shame about the way music has gone these days.
Same 61 in February but in my head I’m still thirty ROCK ON

This doing is still as beautiful and haunting as the day I heard it. One of my faves since the first day I heard it!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Seriously beautiful song, Ed.
Lust & love in lyrics. I still get the shivers when I think of my beloved - gone but never forgotten ❤️
The very close friend who introduced me to Ed Kuepper's music is sadly now gone. I listen to remember. Thank you.
It’s the year 2022 still love this song, his guitar on kings of the sun just beautiful , still 72 yrs old love the saints.
Saw him do this song live in a small restaurant/venue in Katoomba, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. Brilliant songwriter and great show.
Nice we caught the end of him playing Byron about 5 years ago,,, very intimate setting,,, my mate was stoked afterwards he met him (I told him to just go up to him),,, he was chill as,,, I just checked out his guitars and no one told me off lol 😆
@@blacksaxmusic haha. I asked his sound engineer what his guitar was going through but he didn’t tell me details ( the guitar had a unique sound).

Here it is 11/02/2018 an this yank is just now finding this man's music. Why wasn't his music pushed harder here in the U. S.of A. His music is sweet.
Thomas Blue his music goes back to the 70's.keep looking and enjoy.

Masterpiece classic. Beautiful blend of fast-slow pacing and declension. Lovely riff ricochets and hangs in the air.
The man's got talent. I believe he is a diamond in the rough.....could have been a super star.
Apart from memories flooding back this reminds me that there is only 2 degrees of separation in Brisvegas. Eds brother spent some time in the same classroom as me at high school (now long gone) and the list goes on.

A guitar hero. What a talent he has.
Currently watching this clip in a hotel in Kao Lak Thailand . Have seen it played live at the Gov Hindmarsh hotel about 20 years ago and it still sounds great.
One of the greatest song's about about pure carnal desires, always reminds one of opressive humidity of a Brisbane summer day
Oh yeh
Yes he has a song called Electrical Storm but I suppose you know that but still...
Always thought it was about a domestic....lol
Rings true
This is a great song but hard to get out of your head, esp that guitar riff .
Memories miss u sis💖🙏
I saw Ed Keupper perform at the Paddington RSL - already had his album
Ed is an aussie music legend.
Bloody great song
The underrated musician is the key to excellence.
@@TimeTraveller010 when you refer to Nick Cave, don't forget the bad seeds.
Agree with what you say about underrated musicians. But no one is a legend. Australians love to make the word totally meaningless.
I had him on a tape, then I had him on a CD, now I've got him on my Ipod.. Brilliant!
Feel like i am listening to Rage at 4 am Sunday morning...
This should be voted the best song ever
Killer riff
great voice
He should be incredibly rich
Another Aus that doesn't get the complete recognition
I hope in a hundred years they go wow (this song)
A 'stumble' find...made me release how old I am...that's how you make m feel Ed. Cracker of a tune. 🙏
I’ve had the “I was drawn to it against my wishes, ugly memories of the war.” lyrics in my head for months now then finally I remembered who sang them. Ed Fucking Kuepper!!! Great song.
