The juxtaposition between the hillarious/silly/crazy and the serious/heart wrenching and heart warming is what makes this series truly great.
When I was watching an LP of this game it made me laugh like crazy as well as making me take a 20 min break beacuse I was crying so much I couldn't actually see what was happening on the screen... The Yakuza series is one of a kind for sure.

The Yakuza film adaptation is glorious btw. The guy who plays Majima has his eyesight weaker in his right eye, so they switched what side his eyepatch is. But they already had a scene visualised where Majima stares menacingly with one eye out of a corner, and they just kept it with him peeking menacingly WITH THE EYE THAT HAS THE EYEPATCH ON IT.

also sounded like he tried to complete the minigame's story without taking breaks to do other things, which can take quite a while to finish, so he just got burned out on it, which led to him not wanting to do Kiryu's Real Estate management minigame.

So, the Cabaret Club minigame is definitely worth playing to unlock Majima's Mad Dog style, since it's THE most broken style in the whole game. Aside from the unga bunga running attacks, it also has a Heat Action that INSTA-KILLS 3 ENEMIES AT ONCE, and a counter that does astronomical damage (I'm talking, like, 2 or 3 health bars of damage)

The best way to describe the Yakuza franchise as a whole is as such: The main plot is like Goodfellas or The Godfather, but during the intermissions they play an episode of the Simpsons
The Whole "Theyve never killed anyone" Is because murder within the Yakuza is a serious matter, not for moral reason mind you, but doing so carelessly will get a lot heat from law enforcement on the family. The characters of Majima and Kiryu haven't done so and its a reoccuring plot element, the specific events of the random battles arent to be considered canon.
However: another take Ive heard is that its a slight mistranslation, instead that they've never murdered anyone, a small distinction in some cases, but legally a big one

  • @Lord_Numpty

I swear, 24 Hour Cinderella mixed with perfectly timed excessive violence is the best bloody thing. This is proof that Majima is truly the best characters.
And yeah, while I haven't played it (YET), the whole thing is absolutely muck-futhering bonkers. Except during scenes played straight, which actually seem quite impressively done.
Also, the Vtuber whose name you couldn't remember is Usada Pekora.

This game franchise is/was actually really poorly named in the West, because most people hear the name "Yakuza" and think "Oh, it's like Mafia, so it's like a GTA clone but with a focus on organized crime in Japan" but that's just wrong. In reality, the real name of the franchise is "Ryu Ga Gatoku" in Japanese or "Like A Dragon" in English and the games have only recently started using the Japanese translated name for Western Releases once they got to Yakuza 7, which was also a soft reboot as well as sequel series with a new protagonist. It was a marketing decision (or mistake IMI) made with the localization of the first game to try and sell copies with that GTA clone idea even though that label doesn't fit. Especially because the main character is actually only a member of the Yakuza in the prologue of both Yakuza 0 and 1, as well as 7. But comparing the franchise to any open world crime sandbox game, like GTA, Mafia, or even Saint's Row like you did at the start, is a mistake caused by that GTA clone misconception. The protagonists don't/can't beat up or kill random people, are generally good people despite their ties to organized crime, the combat is entirely melee based up until the most recent entry (it's a turn based RPG now), and the games takes place in small but very fleshed out districts of real life cities in Japan, with their names changed for what I assume are legal reasons. Though if you HAVE to compare them to a game in the open world crime sandbox genre, the closest one to Yakuza would be Saint's Row 2 rather than 3, because the silliness is almost entirely in the side content while the story is played straight. If there's any game out there that you can say Yakuza is derived from, it would be Shenmue, or for the latest game, Dragon Quest.
Edit: No joke though, I would genuinely love it if they made the Cabaret mini game into It's own full game. Every time this studio has brought back that mini game in subsequent titles, that was one of the things I was looking forward to most in each title.

  • @nothri

24:45 That's...complicated. Yakuza as a series began as a very serious story about a Yakuza basically trying to get control of the local gang through a series of quests/fights. The storylines have gotten more elaborate, the mini-games have gotten more frequent, and the current incarnation of the game has gotten a little bipolar by trying to keep at least some of the original series' serious story elements while continuing to have the off the wall silliness that frankly is the most popular part of the game for most people. You might think of it as a Japanese version of GTA. Fairly open world, lots of random games and side missions, serious characters and plots in places and absolutely over the top nonsense in other places. It isn't a perfect comparison but it gets the nature of the game across well enough.

If you want to preview the yakuza games tehsnakerer has a really good , possible one of the best series for long form (around 6 hours for some of the yakuza games) extremely in-depth breakdowns , good guy dedicated to his craft to an absurd degree. Also yes mr shakedown is like the lamesouls "drop currency on death" (which they stole from diablo and made worse) but done in a really good way and yes you walk on grown men pretending to be babies AND ITS NOT EVEN THE FIRST TIME kiryuu keeps running into that

Yeah this series immediately jumped into my top 3 after playing Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami. The combat system is the best I ever experienced. Yes even over DMC because the skill floor is just low enough to be able to make use of everything but the ceiling is high enough to where there is a MASSIVE amount of depth for the combat to make up all kinds of combos and such. The side missions are just as fun if not better than Borderlands. There's a ton of fun mini games. Characters are fantastic with Kiryu being a great protagonist and the story is just a badass emotional Rollercoaster. Definitely recommend. Order is Yakuza 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2 (Kiwami are the remakes for Yakuza 1 and 2. 0 is a prequel.), then you just go up through Yakuza 3-7. Hell we're getting three related titles with a interquel on Kiryu between 6 and 7, Yakuza 8 and Ishin which is a spinoff on the Shinsegumi. Definitely recommend it on PC so you can mod Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2 and 6. Kiwami 1 just to have better looking takedowns with Essence Remade and another mod whose name escapes me but I'll edit here once I find out that improves the skill system and styles to be more equal. Kiwami 2 and 6 so you can have all four styles again because for whatever God forsaken reason they decided to just only have one style. Not to say any of these games are worse and that's why they need to be modded. Far from it. It's just a improved experience.

Sure, it’s a grind, but it’s more of an optional way to make some money, with the secret styles being just that: secret. Just a nice boon to players who were willing enough to go through the entire thing, not something essential to the core gameplay. Regardless, do give this game a try. It’s a blast

I'd day the entire Yakuza series in its entirety is a serious take on the entire GTA series. Funny how it initially flopped in the west for being advertised as GTA in that market. But post GTA4 and 5 its actually the one with a story worth embracing at the cost of unnecessary sandbox roaming and mediocre storylines and characters. Rockstar fell off hard honestly. Its why Saints row was so popular for embracing the stupidity Rockstar originally had but slowly filed back to dumb jokes in way of "cinematic" storytelling and on rails gameplay.
Now in contrast the saints row series up to the reboot has been balls to the wall free of restriction on character customization, fun gameplay, and a batshit story that doesn't take itself seriously while Rockstar tries saying they embrace freedom but the customization in online, the most build your own character, is so restricted you can't even buy a new jacket to make yours without spending millions and even then its only one of like four colors and if you want another save up. Shit makes genshin on its worst day look like pulls are the floodgates opening in Mad Max.
Yakuza is neither of these series and never has been but has a third of the wackiness of the original Saints Row in both its side content and storytelling yet unlike GTAV or Saints Row. Yakuza actually let's you know when the story is happening and how goddamn dramatic and serious it is. And even when you're locked in a room it still doesn't try and derail you from finishing the quest in your choice of violence. It builds the game to YOUR liking and challenges you based on how you approach and prepare while peppering its absolute absurdity and thats honestly part of what makes it so good.

It's one of the best games I've ever played in my life, and I will always request anyone interested to try it out. Play this game. That is all.

Her name is Sena Kashiwazaki aka 'Meat' from the series Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. It's a romantic comedy with a surprising amount of heart. It is not off brand but probably should be as it is very... Fan service based...
The show is basically 'Melancholy of Haruhi' meets 'Konosuba' but with the plot of 'It's not my fault I'm not popular'.
Basically a few kids start a club to actually make friends but they all have 'personality quirks' that make that difficult, so they join the club for support and just to hang out.

To sum up Yakuza in general, Main game is badass serious, Side Stories (about 100 ish pending on the game) is mainly silly that almost always end in a fight in one way or another.

The cabaret club is not even half as bad as Max0r makes it sound like, it's 6 very distinct hand signs that are easily recognizable even if you have shit memory like me or you, otherwise it's just making sure you have good girls which is helped by the fact it pauses when you're selecting your girls so you can think about it
Kiryu's real estate is way worse because it is literally just waiting and rubbing yourself against every building in Kamurocho in the hopes you can buy it

I don't know if you have played the game or not yet, but Maxor wasn't lying when he said you'll experience the highest of ecstasy and the lowest of anguish. The game really does put you through a roller coaster. And, of course, I don't know you as a person, I don't know anything about your personality other than what you've shown on camera, I don't know any of that. But from what I *can* tell... I think you will shed a tear in some of these scenes. I genuinely do. I think you will laugh until you cough, and I believe that you will cry. Go try the game out if you can. It'll be a ride, a long ride, but one you will think back to for a long time.

🤣 He's not joking about how much extra shit is in these games but the beautiful thing about them is for the most part, you're genuinely able to beat the game and never touch them past their tutorial introductions yet dumb stuff like that is a VERY good break from how heavy the story can be sometimes. Shot and left for dead by someone you did 18 years in prison for and look up to as a father? Nah.. Imma go play an off brand Mario Kart or run my own business 😂

    Yakuza is INSANE!
Zaboomafu. I miss that old stuffed monkey. And the youth.
I think it's supposed to be that Kiryu has never killed anyone //without cause, like self defense// , but saying he's never killed anyone is more funny.
Hostess club owner, but yes, you need to play this to heck to unlock the final style. Kiryu does real estate for his secret fighting style.
1 billion YEN, but that's still a sizable chunk of change.
Yeah, game mechanics can break world logic hard. Getting a certain 15% interest by getting revenge on the mega mugger in a matter of in game days is something that could break economies like a cheap table in a Wrestling title/story bout.
There's a cult that commissioned propagandanime of their faith. Be. VERY. AFRAID! Those people are on some next next level crazy.
    Digornio needs better cheese.
Given that this is basically Japanese GTA, and going on 8 main titles plus spinoffs, I'm inclined to think it's mad genius.

My goal with Yakuza 0 was originally to 100% it before moving onto Yakuza Kiwami (Yakuza 1 remake, basically), but I toned it down to completing all 100 substories. They're called that instead of sidequests because not all of them are quests; some can just be conversations where the only "quest" was unlocking them.
It took me 3 or 4 years and 140 in-game hours to accomplish this goal. Why?
Because I was so bored out of my mind by all the cabaret club minigame I had to play to accomplish this that I would go on year-long hiatuses before picking it up again.
A few nights ago I finally grit my teeth and finished grinding out all *42 special training sessions* with the cabaret club girls that are required if you want to face one of the two secret superbosses in the game. You have to play a night of cabaret club management between each of those training sessions so eventually what I ended up doing was starting the night, muting the game, and scrolling twitter for 3 minutes between each one because it goes slower if you actually try to play the minigame.
Don't get me wrong I LOVED just about everything else about the game, but I... cannot believe I let that be the reason I let Yakuza Kiwami remain untouched in my steam library for years.
At current time my completion percentage for Yakuza 0 stands at 89.30%.

The abuse part is actually just a negative state a customer can be in, and at least 3 scenes are probably from the Yakuza 1 or 2 remaster, it blends well enough because Yakuza 0, 1 and 2 in their most modern form are all made in the same engine, why 3, 4 and 5 weren't is beyond me, but effectively 0, 1 and 2 are practically identical, besides map, saving, settings, substories, minigames, ease of earning money and style progression
Also the real estate is comically easy compared to the cabaret club, you just go around and throw money at certain buildings, or you walk in and talk to a friend, then you make about a billion yen in roughly 4 minutes, as opposed to the cabaret just eking out about 100 million after probably 6 minutes after maxing all the platinums, Isobe and I think Dolly.
And the game is in fact deaderly serious, expect to cry at least once

The Xabaret and Real Estate minigames aren't that bad, actually
I admit it took a while for me to get into the Real Estate because at first you don't do much on it, you just invest and wait and sometimes have to beat up some people in your area, but the more you play it the more you'll have stuff to do
The Cabaret is really fun, the hand gestures aren't that hard to memorize, there isn't a lot of them
I never got myself into these type of games, but having it as a minigame in a bigger game was actually very interesting

Funny thing is this is one of the only times where half of the shit in his video isn't just Max0r BS. Yakuza is that strange. Some stuff they fail to mention is how we have an entire game in this one where you customize Pocket race cars to race fellow pocket racers to win the title of racing champion. Not to mention how in future games we have a side quest that has a sequel in the next one. Lets say that one has the most twist and turns of any story i've ever seen.
