Every Australian should be so proud of these men for what they done for our amazing country. My partner and I recently had the privilege of meeting one the last few 39th battalion hero’s at his home on the Mornington peninsula and it is a day we will never forget. As we sat across from our hero eating lunch all we could do is hold back the tears and continue to thank him for what him and his mates done for this great land. 👍🏻
I was a nursing student at the Austin Hospital on the Neurological ward back in 2004 and I had the privilege of looking after one of the 39th battalion heroes...when he started telling me a little about his experience over there..he became so very emotional you could see the emotion and horror in his eyes..I will never forget that time with him for as long as I’ll live. Thankyou for your sacrifice and service 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Well versed Kokoda Trail is amongs't the famous trekking sites in the world and thousands of veterans, bereaved families had been learned the hard way like former soldiers life line. I have learned a lot about the Kokoda Trekking trail.
The fuggin jungle of new guinea alone is a battle in itself, it will chew any one up, for those who survived, you are not alone or forgotten, from a u.s. paratrooper.
A fighting retreat over terrible terrain at odds of seven and eight to one is a job you give to elite veteran troops and if they manage it, you put it down to sheer bloody luck and the intervention of the Almighty. But these were green militia, not even regulars. I don't know that the history of war provides another example of such a feat.
The actual odds were that at Buna/Gona...22,000 Japanese landed, 12,000 were verterans of the Pacific South Seas Regiment, the Australian militia consisted of 542 personnel! That was the odds. The militia had to retreat and were followed up by 8,000 Japanese veteran soldiers.........those particular odds is about 15 to one.........remember the Japanese had routed the Americans in the Philippines with numerically LESS forces than the USA and had routed the British in Malaya/Singapore again with LESS than them and here they were assaulting the Australians and outnumbering them by MANY more! Eventually more Japanese and Australians joined the fight - the Australians finally prevailed and slowly pushed the Japanese back to their starting point. In the meantime, for the first time in WW2 a Japanese invasion force was denied its target and were pushed back into the water at Milne Bay by the Australians BEFORE the American Guadacanal action.
Every australian student should read the book kokoda written by Peter Fitzsimons to fully understand what sacrifice and love of country means. Every polatician should also read this before they sign away this country...oh too late they already have.

My grandpa was in 2/39.
@Adolf Hitler hmmmm I'd say look into the mirror.
My grandfather always said to me since I was a child, that if it wasn't for these men we would all be talking Japanese. Lest we forget
I will tell my 3 children the same
