The company has invested more than one billion US dollars in the new production location. The plant, which already employs 2,500 people, will have a capacity of up to 175,000 units per year once the ramp-up phase is fully completed.
San Luis Potosi will build the BMW brand’s most successful model series: the BMW 3 Series Sedan. In the company’s more than 100-year history, this iconic car has come to represent the heart of the brand, setting the standard for dynamic performance, efficiency and design.
The new plant in Mexico expands the BMW Group production network to a total of 31 locations. In line with the BMW Group’s Strategy NUMBER ONE - NEXT, this ensures the company has a flexible and efficient international production network, with a good balance of value creation between Europe, Asia and the Americas.
The new location in Mexico is another building block in this growth strategy. The country is a member of the NAFTA free-trade area with Canada and the United States. It also has a large number of free-trade agreements, including with the European Union and MERCOSUR, which make it easier to export cars and import supplied parts.
The NAFTA region in particular, with its consistently high sales volumes, is a key market for the BMW Group. Twenty five years ago, the BMW Group opened its plant in Spartanburg, USA, and has since invested nearly nine billion US dollars in the site. The company will invest a further 600 million US dollars there by 2021 to gear it up for future generations of the BMW X models. The number of jobs will increase in parallel to around 11,000. In total, the company supports almost 70,000 direct and indirect jobs in the US.
Hermann Bohrer, director of the Mexican plant: “The plant was designed from the start to allow us to respond quickly and flexibly to future model variants and production volumes. We use innovative Industry 4.0 technologies, including new automation solutions and modern assistance systems. Sustainability was also a major focus from the beginning - and we are setting new standards in this area.”
The BMW Group used digital 3D plans during construction of the plant, both for the building itself and for the installation of equipment. During every phase of construction, architects entered specific information, such as location, dimensions and completion date into digital models. Digital 3D-scanning technology was also used during construction for the first time. Combining these two technologies allowed for real-time analysis of construction progress and cost-efficient modifications, providing the BMW Group with continuous planning reliability.
The new BMW Group plant is a pioneer in the field of intelligent maintenance. Smart Maintenance Assistant Software is being used for the first time, enabling proactive maintenance throughout the plant to be planned ahead of time, thereby increasing equipment availability. Service activities are based on current, intelligently organised system data instead of predefined maintenance intervals. Using smart devices such as tablets and smartphones, staff receive all relevant information regarding equipment status.
Various Industry 4.0 technologies are used, for example, in assembly, where screens have largely replaced paper throughout the assembly process. Two screens per takt provide staff with all the information they need - information which, in the past, was only available on paper. This digital job card is being used for the first time at the BMW Group plant in Mexico.
This is awesome.....I had no clue BMW had a production plant in San Luis Potosi💗💗👍👍
I dont understand why mexico dont make their own name brand cars, they did before.. mexico is super rich in natural resources but then again cant make their own vechiles?
Humans make some incredible machines to build another machines to be used by another humans.
Those who say "I won't buy a BMW if it is built in Mexico and not in Germany", is everything fine at home?
@X X Which people? Nowadays there are more Mexicans returning to Mexico than leaving it.
@@redzoom7857 I respect that, just remember that NAFTA guarantees that at least 62.5% percent of every car has to be manufactured in North America to be free of tariffs and with USMCA this percentage highs up to 70 %, which means that some pieces of every car are actually built in the US and others in Mexico, crossing the border at every step of the manufacturing process and making the car industry of the region more competitive against cars manufactured in other places like Asia or Europe which would make them expensive. Personally, I prefer to trust in both the US and Mexican industries.
They cant afford it anyway lol
I bought a 330e and waiting for factory to schedule the build. Thrilled by this video!

Robot, handling high precision assembly work. Human, pushing bucket and mop around.
Welcome to the future.
It takes more technology to build a mopping robot than a robot that builds cars xD
Yes, If your only skills are mopping the floor than that will be your future.

How to know if the car was made in Mexico? VIN number starting with 3 ? Or no necessary?
Just here because they are building my M240i xDrive now ;D
Man machines are just so damn fascinating to look at.
What I find it kinda strange is the lack of work force to produce these cars ....this place looks empty...
maldo72 that's why their cars are unreliable. There should be enough workforce to double check the work. In toyota factories you will find more people doing manual work to ensure reliability
@@tanvirina lol okay buddy
Most car manufacturing is like that, but they do have 2,500 workers there, including lots and lots of engineers.
That's done on purpose, so the potential buyers won't be scared of the quality of these cars. Well, people, who lease them, don't care much.
maldo72 it seems that way because there is machines doing the other work
Decades ago we built those machines to help us to work but now it's because of those machines that many didn't even have a work..
I'd skip the North American delivered models. Thankfully here in Oz, are are straight from Germany, but we pay way more. A heavily optioned 330i sedan goes for almost ~$100k AUD, which is ~$77k USD. But happy to pay more for German made.
Wait why

I will not buy any BMW not made in its original location.
Good, then buy an Acura or Lexus built in the US,Mexico or Canada.
The workers look focused and meticulous in their job. Cool process beautiful car. Good job by BMW.
Similar production as in AUDI México, San José Chiapa. But, in the Audi´s plant I could see an (a) labor process a lot less automated. Por example, where finish process of the Paint Shop, in Audi the quality is review for workers. Here in BWM San Luis is for robots. Important to considered that in both plants the workers of the assembly´s area haven't exoskeletos.
NietzsChe Guevara They can keep Audis or BMWs made in Mexico, big no thanks.
same thing in germany plant, bmw uses robots to check paint.... automation is a good thing, robots don't make mistakes cause they slept poorly the night before ;)
These Germans
I LIKE TO VISIT YOUR PLANT AT SAN LUIS POTOSI
I don't understand why it is not made in Germany? To bring all the equipment in and build a factory is very expensive.
My 3 BMW made in South Africa in 2017 , zero problems .
Excelente, hermoso. Adelante!
Mexico Assembly Plant for New 3 Series is not my choice. No Thanks!
Germany auto 🇩🇪
Hey, it missed a screw!!!
weight savings man.
Who made this machine I can't even think of making a paper boat
So far what I have seen the skill element has bee completely removed from the workers ... even with the engine and transmission they all show up pre assembled and the works do a few bolts here and there ... almost like a token jester to meet some government criteria to get massive tax breaks for basically assembling the car in Mexico ... and the few jobs they have here could be completely done by Robots.... time to wake up people they don’t need you anymore to build cars .... computers have taken over .... Skynet has awoken (see first Terminator movie).
Does nobody ever talk at these assembly plants
not if they know they are being filmed? or edits them out
Because their bosses keep talking and chatting between workers at bare minimum, maybe?
At least put some German supervisors in charge in every department, otherwise it will become CADILLAC

In all of these videos, the workers show fear, is my job going to be replaced by a robot, that never stops?!!!!!

Pura ingeniería alemana 👍🇪🇦😬🇲🇽

I'll Pass on Deliver should the Assembly Plant read - Mexico!
What is that liquid they dip the cars into?
Tequila 😉
I believe is to precharge the metal with a charge (+ or -, not sure), so that then it goes into paint shop, they make sure that the paint is properly stuck to the metal.
That is the galvanizing process. It is a zinc-based coating that prevents corrosion

Saludos
