I was put onto this method by a project about to be lauched at Granja Caimito ranch in Andalusia, Spain (on UA-cam) which covers 40 ha. It seems to be a very innovative and successful method that is picking up traction around the world. Great to see it being implemented here.

Great effort. Really hope they didn't plant any eucalyptus. Gwandana rainforest trees please!

Hi there. Thanks for your support. All the trees/shrubs that were planted were not only native but also locally endemic, incredibly diverse and included groundcover, midstorey and canopy level plants. We can't wait to show you what it looks like in a couple of years.

I know that the Miyawaki forest method instructs that the trees should be planted 1 meter apart. This might produce a rapid forest, however I don't think the trees would be able to grow to full size because it simply is not enough room for their trunks to expand their girth. Has anyone experimented conducting a Miyawaki method when spreading the plants further than 1 meter apart?

You may wish to look at the artificial forest at Yokohama National University campus. It's where Dr. Miyawaki taught, perfected, and implemented his method. Dr. Miyawaki's inspiration came from examining the natural protected forests around ancient Japanese shrines and temples (which were off-limits because they were sacred areas). He realized the enormous density and mini-eco system, and his method is trying to mimic them. Put differently, let nature take over and decide who survives or not. What humans do is to bring all available indigenous species together, and the trees, flowers, bees, insects, or birds will do the rest.

I think you would thin some out at some stage once they have established a closed canopy, its probably less work in the long run and less expensive in labour costs to do one or two rounds of thinning than it is to maintain the area of grass and weeds while it establishes

You expand the area when the forest saturates.

Good to see Australians beginning to do something. 3000 trees isnt much tbh.
Australia is renoun for being one of the worst deforresting countries in the world. Its also top of the tree for killing more species than anyone else.
So..good job. Its a start lets hope it catches on.

All the best from Croatia, EU. 🌱Miyawaki is a dense, fast-growing forestation technique that enhances biodiversity and mitigates climate change. Its benefits for Australia include restoring ecosystems, improving air quality, and providing green spaces for communities, fostering well-being and resilience.
