She had faint whisps of memory of sitting with her grandfather and watching videos of strange little animated people with huge eyes and jerky body movements. She would always become entranced when her grandfather would open up his dusty old computer and move his fingers across the keyboard in a frenzy. It always amazed her that her grandfather was able to move his hands so quickly and effortlessly, and while by all means touch typing was a useless skill in the modern world, she always felt that she could see the magic of times forgotten in his nimble fingers. Shhe had always loved to make fun of the funny little singing animations that he showed her, and he would laugh along.
The grandfather used the old vocaloid songs as a way to connect with his own father, who had died when he was only fourteen years old. Naturally, he never told is granddaughter this. The grandfather had only good memories of his father, which, unbeknownst to him, was the result of his mother's own efforts to keep her son blissfully unaware of the truth about his father. She decided that he was only a child, and so when his father died from a sudden heart attack when he was only fourteen years old, she decided to keep her son from ever finding out about his chronic infidelity and she destroyed all of the papers that might have shown that she was planning a divorce. He was only a child, and he deserved to be able to mourn his father freely, unburdened by the knowledge of who his father really was. She took that knowledge with her to her grave.
The old woman died alone, but she didn't mind. Her children were all off living their own lives, and the truth was that they simply didn't have the time to come and visit their elderly mother, not even when the nurses told them about her rapidly declining health. She didn't resent them. She had worked hard for them to live their own lives, and she was happy for them. Despite this, she was terribly lonely in her dying moments. As her eyes began to close for the last time, she remembered those funny little animations that her grandfather had shown her all those years ago.
