You should check out Joni's album Hejira. It's her other most acclaimed work and it mixes in a lot of jazzy influences and a more dreamy and layered production into her typical folk style

Thats her at her best imo. Her best songwriting. The musicianship is incredible on there. Jaco's bass playing is so subtle but my god does it add so much flavour.

This album might just be the peak of singer-songwriter music. Pure vulnerability and honesty, it's breathtaking. Also ditto to everyone saying to also listen to Hejira, very different but no less amazing

When the late Kris Kristopherson heard “Blue,” he was so flattened by its emotional honesty, he said to Joni, “Jesus Christ, girl, keep something for yourself.”

    a few recommendations:
songs - Adrianne Lenker (folk, singer-songwriter)
Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon (folk rock, singer-songwriter, alt-country)
SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic)
Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production)
Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo)
Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop)
Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)

Thank you for your great reaction, David. I've always loved this album, but now you have explained the complete conceptual story of her life's experiences and the blues that came with it through an album of individual songs. Her Song Spell. A lost year in the life of Joni Mitchell, before she was famous.

Great reaction. One of the best albums ever, a masterpiece of songwriting! Two songs (My Old Man and River) were about her love affair with musician Graham Nash of the famous group Crosby, Stills & Nash fame who she hurt when she broke up with him and he was devasted; he wrote the songs "Our House' before the breakup and 'I Used to Be King" after the breakup. BTW 'old man' refers to a domestic partner or lover probably in a long-term relationship. Love can inspire such great song writing!

  • @collinbeal

This album is always hovering in the periphery of my Top 10 by a hair's breadth. It's so poignant and descriptive and full of lovelorn ennui; even more than that, it's so personal and human. I hope you'll one day listen to another revealing and vulnerable folk album, the pinnacle of my top albums, _Ys_ by Joanna Newsom. I've stopped spamming it in your comments, as I don't want to be annoying, but I will remind you that you told another commenter about a year ago that the reaction to it would be coming soon. Smags never misses, and I hope you'll pull through for ol' Bealio here. Love you Smagsy-poo keep being THE sigma reactor of UA-cam.

_Blue_ is a defining album of 1971 & often recognized as Joni's masterpiece - it isn't. Joni has *several* masterpieces (better than _Blue,_ imo). You wanna hit:
    • _The Hissing Of Summer Lawns_ (1975) 👑
    • _Hejira_ (1975)
    • _Court & Spark_ (1974)
    • _Song To A Seagull_ (1968)
    • _Dog Eat Dog_ (1985)
    • _Chalk In A Rain Storm_ (1988)

    recs:
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles (Sick sounding early 90s math/indie rock, awesome guitar tone)
Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (GORGEOUS unique sounding early 90s shoegaze, sounds like mbv, pavement, guided by voices with twee pop mixed in, so awesome, better than Loveless imo)
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy)
Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine)
Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc)
The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time)
Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod)
Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock)
Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West)
The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music)
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi)
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips)
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
