  • I'm starting a new video series called The 400 Square Foot Garden. I'm going to teach you how to grow food from May thru Fall with a crop plan for succession plantings to take all of the guesswork out of growing. I'm hoping to inspire as many as possible to create a small sustainable garden using only a small 20x20 foot area in their backyard!

The obvious answer is to put your tower on a wheeled stand. That way you can turn it easily.

May I suggest perlite and vermiculite in your potting mix. Also, you won't get many strawberries your first season because they're getting established. I have the Dollar Tree stackables and a Greenstalk. I noticed how flimsy the DT stackers are, so I doubled them up. I also have quite a bit of my garden on automatic irrigation from my water spigot. I plan to do the same with my towers. I used to have the Greenstalk on an automatic watering system before I moved and it worked out well. Another thing I do is I use masking tape with a sharpie and label what's in my planters or seed starting trays. That way I will know and not be concerned that a tag got moved. I've been gardening for 45ish years and I will tell you that there is no perfect way of doing things. What works for a Gardener in New York probably won't work for someone in Texas, but they might be able to adapt it to their individual needs. Good luck in your journey. Also, for all Gardeners, don't plant anything you don't like and don't think you need to plant 50 plants of something if you really will only consume what 5 plants will produce. Figure out what to do with the produce if you get it (including donating to a food bank). God Bless!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I did learn that after the fact that I shouldn’t get so many strawberries the first year. I’m hopeful it will be a better year this year for strawberries. I planted mine in a Greenstalk and I really love how it works so far. I do struggle with writing down what I’m planting that’s a big mistake I always seem to make I always think I’ll remember what I planted but I rarely do lol

I got a tip from a youtuber gardener to put my stackables on a lazy Susan. So I did exactly that. I rotate my strawberries and my herbs during the day. So they can get sun on all sides. So, you might want to think about doing that😊 Also I have mine stacked four high

I would not depend on rain for any potted plant. Even when it does rain it is not enough especially for potted fruit producers.
I put them eight high but on a wheeled base I glued to the bottom planter. The wheeled pans are also sold at DT.
I also leave the top planter empty and I fill it with water in the morning. I set them on a cement pavers so they turn easily. I also invested in a drip system. It gets hot where I live so I give everything a good soaking early in the day before the sun is high and at night. I got lots and lots strawberries year one and so on.

I’m getting ready to plant my everbearing strawberries in Dollar tree planters. I will now only go 4 high like you said. Also I bought small yellow sponges to go into the bottom of the pots that another guy mentioned. I w@nt to get a pallet for my plants too.

@@beverlyspringer5368 sorry to hear that I have dealt with the same struggles. The only solution I’ve found for the heat this year is using a shade cloth, it’s a 30% shade cloth and it saved my lettuce rows from bolting, I’m sure it could be used for your strawberry plants too! You could search for shade cloth on Amazon

I may be getting ahead of myself, but do you think it would help by the amount of drainage holes you make?

I purchased the greenstalk gardens for this year and I’m hoping they do a better job holding on to moisture. I was afraid with these if I made too many holes they would dry out too quickly. I’m planning to only stack these dollar tree planters about 3 tiers high for herbs this year and I’ll put strawberries in my new greenstalk leaf planters.

I will say I have been watching dozens of stackable videos and I did see one lady only do 1 hole (or 3 per tier) rather than poke out all 3 holes per section (12 per tier) to help with moisture control

should put sponges in bottom and dont put hole in very bottom put in the side right on top of the groves so that it holds a small amount of water and it will be like a self waterer

@@onceuponatinyfarm I found with my Greenstalk that I needed to add 1 extra hole for each planter cup and I grew amazing strawberries in it where I used to live. I just put everbearing strawberries in it a few days ago in my new house. I haven't set up the irrigation yet, but I expect to in the next week. It'll be on a timer on my water spigot. Also, if you buy more Greenstalks, buy them near Mother's Day because they go on sale and several of the UA-cam channels (Roots & Refuge is one) have an additional discount code for them.
