You are so patient and details in teaching the flute. I appreciate it when you place the flute close to the camera so we can see where to put our fingers. That really helps with learning. Thank you so much!
As a beginner flute player, coming from reed woodwind instruments, your tutorials are so helpful. One question. What is the point in putting down the pinky key versus not? Because when I play BAG, they sound the same whether the pinky key is pushed or not
Hello! Yes, it's super challenging to say what the problem is via text :) .. but I can speak to a common reason why this typically happens. When playing, we ultimately will run out of air and a lot of times I see my students tense their lips when they run out of air to try and keep the sound going. So if this is the case, I would recommend working to keep the lip position totally set and consistent (firm yet neutral corners, not tight) and when running out of air, instead of tensing the lips, keep the center of the lips relaxed and engage the ab muscles instead to keep the air going... almost like when you talk for a really long time without taking a breath, you'll notice your abs will start to engage to keep your voice at the same volume... so take a deep breath before playing and when you start to run out of air as you're holding a note, begin to increase the engagement of the stomach muscles (again, not the lip muscles :)). Also, sometimes thinking of using warm air when we play can help us to play with more support from the stomach.. Lastly, you might also try using a mirror to keep yourself honest and really make sure nothing is changing in the face as you run out of air... I hope this helps some!! Since I haven't seen your playing, that's the best I've got as far as responding via typing :P Best of luck in your practice!!
