All normal procedures are memory items so the checklist should be completed after everything is set. It is a checklist not a do list where normal procedures are concerned. If required function is carried out during the checklist it means that item had been forgotten, or missed, and the checklist had done its work to ensure it was set.
Been watching you for a long time, but we all know that Kim is the star of the channel now ;) Good job Kim! We all knew you could do it. You have the community, and more importantly, Baron Pilot, by your side. I can see and hear BP's influence in your training. I'm sure he's more proud of you than we are. Outstanding!
You are doing great! Just remember to follow your checklist! As a CFI myself I train my students on a flow follow by a checklist model. On our "Before Take Off Checklist" it states "Doors/Windows.....Locked/Latched." Looks like you did it on the first take off but let the nerves get to you on the second one. Double check and triple check if you need to but before crossing the hold short line be sure your checklist is 100% complete. On the last landing DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GO AROUND! Get comfortable and proficient with go arounds. Stable approach and landing in the touchdown zone and centerline should be must otherwise go around and try again. Don't set yourself up for a runway excursion. Keep up the fantastic work! Practice makes perfect and boost in confidence. Cant wait for the next video. Love the journey.
I am never ashamed when I have to do a go around. If the site picture looks wonky, I go around. Ps. It's so hot here in California that I have left the windows open. No big deal. Maybe it was hot. You can fly with the windows open per the POH. It's just the extra noise from the window.
Go-arounds can be disastrous for pilots who don't practice them (even if just chair-flying them) often enough, so +1's to those saying to not be afraid to do them (perhaps after a few reviews with your CFI, but you're probably already doing that and we're just not seeing the vids here). "CRAM, CLIMB, CLEAN, [CLICK for IAPs], COMMUNICATE!!" I have to remind myself of this every single freakin' time I decided to do a go-around, and it works!
As you progress becoming more comfortable in your flying it comes with time. Well on your way to being a very competed pilot. I am 80 and felt the same way as you do now when I started flying in 1973. Do not fly anymore and always enjoy you young people taking up the challenge. Best to you always.
My young son wants to be a pilot so bad, and I'm gonna make sure we watch all of Kim's journey together so he really gets to know the process. These are invaluable!
It is so fantastic to see you cleanly and calmly talking yourself through EVERYTHING! You are absolutely in command of that aircraft. You know everything you need to do before you need to do it, you're organized, staying ahead of the airplane, making good decisions (the midfield cross to get a better idea of how to head into an unfamiliar runway at an unfamiliar airport is a good example), and ya. So what if your takeoffs and landings aren't perfect. In one sense, saying "that sucked" is good... always room to improve, but in another sense, don't be too hard on yourself either. For where you are in your training, you're doing great!
Kim I believed in you from day 1 you have done amazing flying with your husband n now getting your own flying license I am sure all of us fan’s would fly with you anytime. We’re all so very proud of you keep up the great job Kim your amazing. You got this champion
As so many have said in comments before me, you really did great Kim. You recognized that your initial Soft Field T.O. wasn't what you wanted and did a much much better one on your take off to return to home base. You worked yourself through every aspect as you should. Really a great job. You get better with each flight. You will see that one day very soon it will all come together, and you'll love it...lovin the videos..thanks so much for sharing with us all. moose
Good onya young lady. It is educational, informative and entertaining to follow your progress on this rewarding life journey. This retired geezer would suggest that finding the way to be confident and comfortable in that solo journey is the secret to personal happiness. And at the end of the day, YOU only gotta make YOU happy.
You sure do help us non-pilots appreciate all that is involved in flying an airplane. Much more involved than we previously envisioned. Well done, Kim.
Each time I watch is that walk down my own memories. Those nerves you talk about, knew em well, but as I continued they faded back. Be careful of being hard on your self. I am/was very critical at times on even what others would have said "decent landing" that critical aspect feeds back to the nerves. Watch a couple of videos where ATPs bounce a jet and say "on one is perfect". I got to say it is nice to fly today with all the electronic aids. ADSb takes some of the worry away and moving maps helps take some stress off the navigation, but I LOVED that you still noted and timed way points. Charts and timing won't run out of juice 🙂 You continue to grow as a pilot and the most brave thing you do is post your journey on this site. I look forward to the long solo cross country.
Just wanted to thank you for this comment. Even though it wasn’t intended for me it certainly hit home as I’m learning and kicking myself left and right due to being VERY self-critical. I needed to read that. Thanks again 🙏
I’m not a pilot, but the first time I drove a car solo and sailed a boat solo were some of the best moments of my life. You have inspired me to try another solo moment. Thank you.
Congratulations for not getting swamped, and making the decisions you need to at the time. Refining takes time, so ease up on yourself. Oh yeah! Welcome back to the ground; it's always a great landing when you and the plane can take off again.
I knew this was going to be good, after the first 30 seconds or so, because the confidence in your voice was obvious. It's great that you recognize each tiny error, and fix them, even though nothing you did was "life threatening". You're perfecting your skills, as we all do, and that's the key. Great job, and we're all happy you're sticking with it! :)
Kim you did good you showed a lot of confidence.Practice makes perfect. You handled it well the cool part is when you video this you can always watch and critique yourself and can see how to improve the next time around. "great job". I remember doing a go around on my first solo and how cool I thought that was flying down the runway and then climbing out LOL.
knowledge..practice.. execution..observation.. and even more practice..and more repetition ..makes confidence ..which finally makes perfect..a really great job..and keep em coming..
Kim, you greased the first landing. Your next ‘soft-field,’ TO you got that right rudder in and held the centerline. Really nice work. I think we could all feel your new solo pilot intensity. Keep working on it to build confidence. Thanks to Mr. Baron Pilot for the great captures and editing. Brains and beauty, EPIC. You’re doing great! 👍👍😁
Oh Kim don't beat yourself up! You really did lots of good things. You took care of business, did extra things to make sure you would know what you were landing on and so you could insure landing safely. Landings aren't always going to be butter no matter how long you've flown. You've really made progress and are doing great. Be aware of things you can improve on, but don't beat yourself up, young lady! You really have done good and come a long way. I know a certain Baron Pilot is one proud dude. Keep it up, Kim!
I agree with Richard as a non pilot. I did really like the way you narrated all your decisions and moves as you were executing them. That is a lot more than other pilots I have been following. Thank you. Looking forward to your long cross country flight.
You did fine, better next time... You did the most important thing... Keeping emotions aside until you were sure you had made it.. Your excitement shows as does your desire to achieve. Boo Boos are the best lessons against disaster. One day 50 or so years from now.. You will have great memories. It's always fun to watch the young folk's...
Good job going through the checklist out loud before the first takeoff. I didn't hear the after landing checklist, or the before takeoff checklist the second time. That's probably why the window was left open.
Hey Kim, I was actually inspired to start my PPL, back in Feb this year, at age 50 from your early videos. Today I am at 30 hours, soloing the circuits and in a week or so will be doing solos further away. It's nice to see your journey because you are a little further ahead than me. Like you, I still have the shakes after every landing ( good or bad landing, dual or solo ). It's funny, because I am confident getting into the circuit, I am confident that I know how to land the plane safely, on the final approach and landing and am feeling good and my landings are all pretty consistent now ( except when there is strong crosswinds... I have work to do there ). And despite having confidence the skills my instructors have taught me, my hands are still shaking after every landing. Lols I am still making minor mistakes, tracking the center line on take-off and landing is one of my current focus - I am OK, but just not consistent.
You are doing so well. I just don't understand why you are so critical of yourself. You are ready, you are perfect, you correct your mistakes and that is amazing. Congratulations.
I thought is was successful and very well thought out. We al learn every day. You, you are doing amazing Kim. Every day is a day to learn something new, Keep doing what you are doing!
I’m a G650 pilot and have just recently gotten back into GA. I loved your video, very helpful and informative. You did awesome, pat yourself on the back!
I am so enjoying your journey to PPL, Kim. You're doing great, and no matter what anyone says, you're a pilot now! You're just waiting on a certificate. Solo x-country flying is where you get your wings. Great job, Kim... and who cares that the landing back at home wasn't perfect. ;) Can't wait for the next one. BeardedAv8r
I haven't been keeping up with the channel, (I am a non aviator) but I am really impressed where you are at. Not just that, but you film it too. How many would do that with all the keyboard warriors criticism that comes hand in hand with UA-cam and other social media? 😀😀😀😀👏👏👏👍👍👍
Watch out guys. There`s a new pilot on the block. A cute one too😉. It`s awsome too see Kim inprooving at every flight. She seems much more relaxed now. I mean, we all knew she had what it takes to achieve it. Awsome also to see her `mentaly going throu what she`s doing, and saying it out loud. She obviously had 2 good teachers🤙.Congrats Kim. Happy landings from portugal😘
Kim to get a 3 degree glide slope to the runway keep the runway about in the center of your windshield. At the airlines we plan to touchdown the first 1500 feet of the runway no later than 1/3 of the runway length. So try and hit those targets. Also fly the airplane all the way. If it isn’t doing what you want then take action. Keep it up you will get more and more confident with experience.
Nice work, I'm sure you are probably past this, but on short final I don't like the nose swinging back and forth, I keep it parallel and use the aileron to stay on centerline. Keep the aileron in until you taxi off the runway for crosswinds. It took me a little bit after I got my certificate to perfect crosswinds, a good scare made me find religion on it. But better off to just do it and not have a scare. You look like a great pilot, excellent work!
Great work. Nice confidence building flight. Recommend an IPad mount. If unable, try to place the ipad at eye level so you can see outside and instruments. This is a good habit to build for instrument training
You are doing good Kim. Very proud of the progress you have made. Keep practicing and self evaluating. That is what every pilot, regardless of experience should be doing. Also, use those checklists every time. The aviation community is gaining an exceptional pilot! Keep up the good work!
You're doing great Kim. Don't kick yourself too much. We all struggled our first few solo flights/landings. Just takes time to build proficiency. You'll get there!
Ahhh I remember those days getting my license. There “will” be a few unexpected air events in her future. BUT she is gathering experience to become the best pilot she will ever be…. After her check ride. I can still feel how capable I was with the aircraft the day of my check ride. All the self critique of your piloting skills getting to that check ride…. Then you appreciate any landing is a good landing. Great video.
Didn't see anyone mention this yet but at 15:58 she calls right downwind when she's entering a left downwind, by 17:06 it's left base... runway 04 is left traffic.
Soft field takeoffs came in use to me when I had a heavy load one day. I set 10% flaps then used a long displaced threshold to begin my roll. My plane (a Cessna 172 hawk XP) lifted off smartly and the departure was uneventful. I had four people on board with all their heavy and oversized baggage. Since I had a long flight, the fuel burn equalized the over weight conditions and I learned a lesson that day. Don’t let anyone talk you into bringing more luggage than you should carry! Oh yea, everything went okay but, it could have gone very badly.
Great work. I like the way you talk your way through the procedures. You have come such a long way in a comparatively short time. all the best from Canada.
great flight, I know you will watch the video and critique yourself but all in all, good flight. best of luck on your long x-country. I remember mine to this day and that was 1986!
Easy with the aileron on the takeoff rool please. Landing on 04 with a 120 at 4 wind would have required a slight slip to the right ( right aileron - left rudder ) before touch down resulting in a nice center line , we reckon
Kim ❤❤❤ You're doing a good job, Kim, you're did a good take off with the plane. It's ideal headquarters. It had the control of the plane. When you're making a landing and watch what you're doing, you'll get there. I said good afternoon. I hope you make good out with this flight

Self critiques are the best part. Smooth as silk landing at the cross country airport. Funny wind coming home so slightly off centerline.
You got this Kim, Your doing Great!!! Remember ANGELS are meant to Fly!!

Hey Kim, haven’t seen you in quite awhile. Way to go. Proud of you.
You are doing alright Kim, keep it on the runway, practice makes perfect.

Outstanding, well done Kim.❤
You are not nervous Kim, you are excited and elated😉. I put a small towel on my left thigh, to wipe the sweat off my left hand🤪
That hand sweat is a thing lol 😂
You are doing so well. I just don't understand why you are so critical of yourself. You are ready, you are perfect, you correct your mistakes and that is amazing. Congratulations.
Keep it up you are doing great I have been following you guys for a long time I am a commercial pilot and still enjoy learning with
Thanks for the ride. I think you did awesome. I'm a non pilot. I loved you telling us everthing you were going to do.Keep doing what you are doing.
Great job Kim
I’m a G650 pilot that has recently gotten back into general aircraft flying. I love your videos! You do such a good job!! Keep them coming!
Awesome! Thank you for your kind words.
Go Kim! Be happy for the thousand things you did perfectly, and work on the one thing you're not happy with next time.
You're doing great. Thanks for making this content, I really prefer to see this type of realistic flying.

Total 180 in the confidence. Happy to see that! Great work
Rock on Kim!
The struggle is real~! Gr8 practice~!
Coming along nicely.
Greased that first one! Your correcting mistakes. Very good job!

You did great, Kim!
Good job! Keep up the talk it double checks your mind interpretation of the checklist.
Any one you walk away from...
You are doing great Kim! Keep it up!
Great job!!! That looks like so much fun...
Great work. Nice confidence building flight. Recommend an IPad mount. If unable, try to place the ipad at eye level so you can see outside and instruments. This is a good habit to build for instrument training
With this vid you bring me back to the beginning of my flying adventures, I think you are doing great! Keep it up!
Kim
Wow what a smooth landing that was. You go girl 😮
Keep on learning and striving for excellence no matter how many hours you log. Cheers
Nice work. I'm enjoying your trials and tribulations.
Thank Michael. Kim really appreciates that and we appreciate your continued support. 🍻

I love watching your channel and I think you’re doing great as you get more experience you’ll get more confident
Great work. I like the way you talk your way through the procedures. You have come such a long way in a comparatively short time. all the best from Canada.
Great job 👍 well done
great flight, I know you will watch the video and critique yourself but all in all, good flight. best of luck on your long x-country. I remember mine to this day and that was 1986!
Very nice flight !!! I love the split screen camera views. I wish more YT flyers would do this.
From sitting here you did a hell of a job. You should be very proud of yourself.
Your doing "Great"
Kim. Practice Makes Perfect
Calm down girl! You got this.
Sounding strong on those calls
