Froylan Farias i would just poke the seller, its under warranty anyways and any FI car/bike shouldnt need gas when starting up (they advice against it matter of fact). my Polo 2012 got an ECU update some years ago(2013 i think) then it worked flawless down to -25C 👍🏻
Unless you have a carburetor with squirters that is only going to make it worse. It is like doing the opposite of a choke. I wouldn't even consider that a long start up. When my KTM 640 has been off for over a couple of days it takes more than this to get it going.
Where is giving it some gas the opposite of what the choke does? The choke limits the air that's being soaked in and thus, making the mixture a lot richer. Giving it gas manually just makes it even richer and if the issue is because the engine gets a too lean mixture, then this actually solves the issue quite well.
S0urc3C0de A choke on bikes normally opens a passage in the carburetor that allows excess fuel to "slip by", since many carbureted bikes have CV carbs. On FI bikes the computer would see the TPS signal raised when the throttle is turned during starting, causing more fuel to be sent into the cylinders. It's not a permanent fix. A brand new $13,000 bike shouldn't have to be played with to get to start in a reasonable time. It should start the first second.
Dude saw you walk out of the HEB around the corner from my house, and I was like wait, is that Motonosity?! Glad to see you haven't had any other issues with the new R6. As for the oil changes, invest in a good thin filter wrench and put dzus fasteners on the girl.
It looks awesome, at least. It sounds like it's just a fueling issue. The R6, in particular, is tuned for maximum top-end, so it falls to reason that the fueling on the bottom, would be an oversight. Easy fix, though - get an ecu controller and give it more fuel down low.
All it is is a fuel problem. When the bike sits for a while, fuel will slowly drain out of the fuel system (back into the tank). When you go to start it, it will take a couple of seconds for the fuel to get pumped back into the injectors. My bet is if you turn the key on and off about 5 or so times to let the fuel pump push fuel all the way to the injectors then try it, it should have a lot better result. Also, if it's not a safety hazard, then they don't do an official recall.
Yah I have tried this actually letting it prime already 10+ times and still have takes a while to start only thing that seems to make it start faster is giving it gas as I start it
That makes sense. It was something to try but it appears the fuel pump is cut off when the fuel pressure is at a certain point instead. When the bike sits, fuel drains back down thus allowing air to be sucked into the line and when the pump is turned on, it pressurized the fuel lines but does not bleed off the air. That's probably why twisting the throttle decreases the time it takes to start because you're bleed the air out through the fuel injectors quicker than if you were to do a startup without touching the throttle.
HONDASBEST so... What is making the fuel drain uphill... Against gravity... The fuel tank is on top of the engine, so if the fuel were to be "draining out" then it would be going down into the engine and flooding the engine, which does not seem to be the case here.
Fuel systems especially ones that use a fuel pump work off of pressure and vacuum. Once the pump shuts off, there pressure and vacuum is still in the fuel system causing the fuel to move around a little bit in which ever way the fuel goes.
Not being 100% familiar with the system on the Yamaha, I have had fuel injected cars that did this exact thing. One, a 95 F150 that would bleed off fuel pressure. air would get into the line and cause it problems starting up.
To set up the shift light properly look at a dynograph of the R6 and set it up to come on when you've passed peak torque by x. x being the rpms you lose when changing gear at the point so that your rpms reach peak torque, eg if peak torque is at 13,000 and from 2nd to 3rd you lose around 2,500 rpm then the light for you to change should be at 15,500. Find the mean value of x for every "important" gear changes (5th to 6th isn't as important as 2nd to 3rd on a track) and set it up for it to come up accordingly. There is a more mathematical and correct way of doing it by looking at the dynograph and then using engine rpms and gear ratios to find the perfect spot via maths, but the result is very close to the method mentioned above.
Yamaha have the highest reliability out of all makers, but doesn't mean they're immune! Hope you get it sorted. I watched the oil change vid and was kind of disappointed by what's involved! I'm looking at getting one (When Yamaha brings them to New Zealand in a couple of months) and it's way more involved than my FZR250 I'll be replacing with it! Oil filter is at the back of the engine at the bottom, don't even have to remove any fairings and drain bolt is located easily accessible between the bottom of the fairings. It's a dream! 10 mins and you're done! That being said, I think I could overlook it for something more powerful with better suspension, better brakes, better handling, not having to put up with sensitive carbs on a 4 cyl 250cc, and amazing looks. Also, set the shift light to 13,750rpm. Max power is at 14,500rpm, so will give you reaction time. Especially if you're looking to go a tooth or 2 less in the front sprocket, will get through those revs quicker.
you only think you're tired now! ;) congrats on mini Moto again and good luck! It'll be the best ride of your life! Can't wait to see pics (if you choose to do that).
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has that cold start problem haha Though if you give it a slight bit of throttle while starting, it will start right up for me.
Hey man I work at a shop and the newer models of the r1 and r6 tend to have a longer time to start up at cold start, and sometime while at temp. It helps to blip the throttle a little to start it, I have not heard anything about Yamaha addressing this as an issue. Just so you know it is not great to hold the starter button as long as you did, the starter is only meant to work in bursts. You should hold the starter button 3 seconds at max and then stop, if it doesn't start try another time, the starter can handle it but it does put excessive stress on the starter to run longer than a few seconds. My speculation of this issue is that there is an oil pressure sensor, so at cold start there is no pressure in the lubrication system and takes a little to prime the system before starting. This is only a guess, not official whatsoever.
Lol, Thanks for watching my videos Motonosity! I'm the guy that made the videos about the 2017 R6 problems. Been watching your vids for awhile and never thought I would actually get referenced in one of your vids. :) if you could, it would be really cool if you could leave a link to my channel or video in the description! Thanks!
I do see what you are saying about there are no official documents confirming the cold start issue. I did a search myself and could find nothing. I couldn't imagine why the dealer would want to lie about this. They are either misinformed or Yamaha is being slow in releasing an official recall.
Have you guys tried a battery with more CCAs? I get that if you buy a new bike you shouldn't have issues with the battery, so that would be annoying, but I would the think that the battery that they're putting in the R6s don't have enough juice for the R6s, making the battery the issue not the actual bike. I live in a colder environment and had battery issues on my 09 R1, bought a Shorai lithium battery and I haven't had to plug my battery in a tender in 3 years. Cheers and good luck!
I got the Toce double down slip on exhaust on mine and I love it XD And my R6 does the same thing from a cold start, we shall see if Yamaha releases something about it. Like you said, not a big issue. Does yours have the engine tick as well?
I would imagine the cold start problem might get worse in colder climates. Not too bad in this video, started right up on the second try, but then again it's usually at least 90 degrees in Texas at this time of year so it does make one wonder how it would handle a cold start in 50 degrees.
lol, I would hope the 2017 R6 starts up at those temps too, 35F, but given the hesitation even in warm weather I have my doubts. But the hesitation in the R6 might have nothing to do with the temp, so who knows.
mannybianco Not to bad Jesus man that was painful to watch bottom line you should push that button and it should start way quicker then that cold or not i can go days without riding my bike and it starts right up.
I had that cold start issue a few times even had it after a ride and a refuel at a gas station. But that was when it was breaking in. Got 2.3k on it and havent had it happen in probably 1.3k miles
That cold start is slow, because the tune is too lean when cold. Find a proper tuner, and you can fix it! Manufacturers do the lean start for emissions reasons.
So I have some questions. Especially with a recent rise in interest for the naked bikes such as MT09. For a day to day ride and street riding, what would your advise be. Do you have a take on if its any different? should I only consider R6 if I wanna take it to the track?
If you're just going to do a slip-on, the GYTR slip-on that fits the previous model is great. Small, looks good and sounds good. I'm betting it'll work on the new model as well.
honestly my 2013 ZX-6R 636 had some cold start "deficiency" but seriously, I just gave it a stronger Shorai Lithium Ion Battery and a K/N Fliter and the bike kicked over about 4 times faster. it pretty much start the second you touch it now. So I know I'm talking a different bike but it may be worth the shot.
Roads here in MA are too beat up for an R6. Snowplows. Ice. Frost heaves. But I sure do love the sound of that motor and I liked my brother's YZF600. So I am sure I would really dig this bike.
My 09 had a couple issues. One of them was the cam chain tensioner. That got recalled, and the headlight lenses would cause the black pieces to melt. Also a recall. Which they just some kind of clear tape under neath the headlight. Other then that it's been a great bike !
You didn’t mention the high beam, there’s 2 LED Bulbs, 1 is on 24/7, which I get flashed for a lot at night on mine.. plus it’s not symmetrical so it looks daft.
@motonosity I found out that if you ever so slightly turn the throttle whole turning the bike over it makes it almost instantly, it's supposedly because there's "not enough" fuel when it's that cold
My 2012 GSXR 600 starts immediately, every time. Even after not being started for months during the winter, it started immediately. Even so, I would love to get me a new R6, lol. I love my ride, but it's not a Yamaha. I had a brand new '03 R6 back in the day and it is still my favorite bike that I've owned (crashed it).
Next cold start try, turn on key and let fuel pump stop turn key off and then back on and then start. If fuel pump kicks on twice, it sounds like a pressure prob. Just a thought.
I own a ktm rc 200 whis also has similar riding position as your bike. I have neck pains when i ride this for longer distances. do you face the same issue?
I have a 17 r6 too and it does the same thing with cold start. I noticed if you flick the throttle while starting it it'll start up much faster. Must be something with fuel timing !
FYI you voided your warranty when you did the first oil change. First oil change must be performed by an authorized dealer...thought id mention that since you might be having issues with the r6
Hey bro, nice video. Just bought an r6, does your bike sound like it's rattling as you release the clutch in 1st? Is that just the bike chugging sounds a little sxetxh though
Remember your R1 doesn't have an oem battery in it, it's got a shorai battery. If you buy a shorai battery for your R6 too it should speed up the cold start.
Is it true that the 2017 R6 is as "uncomfortable" as the old ones? Because I've seen a couple of videos and two of my friends own old R6s and they all said that your wrist and back are in for a rough ride but you get used to it eventually. Is it true for this one as well or is it more comfortable than the old ones?
Lucky pull with that cop, man! They must not have the tech (or have it on) that they have here in my area: radar is constantly running and identifying the speed of all vehicles in sight. Better lucky than good! ;-) Great video! Enjoy these last few days before the baby! Life's about to change, big time!
Hello, did you r6 vibrate? Mine vibrates extremely hard after 6k rpm, making it barely ridable. Also, i hear like a buzzing sound from under the tank; The bike got like 100 miles on it, gonna go to the dealership next week
7 років тому
For the price I still prefer a gsxr 750, faster than any 600/636/675. Racetrack ready, more torque at low revs, almost 300km/h, more confortable. Gixxer 750 its a smart buy. Best of both worlds.
this is a very common problem regarding newer emission regulations! they reduce the amount of fuel on cold start ups to heat the cat up quicker and thanks to that engines just don't start up smoothly. so its a cheat basically. I've done this mod on all kinds of vehicles in the past from bikes to generators etc. and all you have to do is find the correct fuel table and add just a small percentage of fuel and presto it fixes the problem! only thing holding the aftermarket back is finding all the fuel tables! it's just a pain to figure out. so I would just go to your local bike tune shop and keep asking them if it's available jet. if you need more info just send me an email! hope this helps! kind regards
Starting sounds like a fuel issue. especially since elsewhere in these comments someone mentions cracking the throttle on theirs and getting a faster cold start.
Give it alittle throttle when you're cranking and it starts up. I know we shouldn't have to do that on a new bike but we do it is what it is. I'm assuming it's some kind of mapping issue, we'll see.
My '12 R1 can be tempremental with cold starts but it hasn't let me down yet... I'm just used to my CB400 almost seemingly starting before you even touch the button 😂
Hey I was just wondering about you’re R6, because I’m having a ticking sound that’s kinda loud when riding and when pulling the clutch in it stops, I talked to the dealership and they told me that Yamaha said it’s a normal thing, which is weird because when I got it brand new it didn’t make that noise till about two weeks later. I’m hoping you have any good information or I’m stuck having to deal with it.
Those Yamaha's you want to start them before the fuel pump finishes priming. so you really want to use the engine start switch as part of the start instead of leaving it on all the time.
i think its a fuel problem with the new fuel system. try to prime the fuel pump a few times before you cold start it. but thats bullshit i wouldnt be ok with that on a brand new bike.
subed. from Austin too. have an 06 r6, have not yet rode it. I needa get my license. bike had a lot of issues fr previous owner smh. exposed wires in gas tank. tons of rust in it. good vid man. be safe buddy.
My TTR starts up WAY faster than my Honda. Of course that's 125 vs 125 with different compression. Sold my Honda recently, hopefully getting a 230 soon.
Can you ride that thing out to Mormon MIlls and take some footage of the falls? The roads around there are of the rather twistie kind nd your R6 would eat them up. I particularly like your footage of what appears to be the highway that runs from Austin to Marble Falls. I'm 10,000 miles from home and it does my heart good to see the Hill Country, home sweet home, again.
R6 or a ktm 690 smc R! I like both but I already dont know wich one choose :(. About your experience on your motard and sportbike... what would you do? Sorry about my english. Greetings from Peru
I am wondering if it has issues getting fuel to fire up or maybe the firing order is off. If its that its very odd it would be on a mass such as that. I can understand maybe a few but not the mass.
mine has as late of a start as yours also. can't complain because like you said it always starts. my fluid resovoir seems kinda lose and wobbles while riding. Tried to tighten it but it doesn't do much. Thats the only other issue I have with the bike
hey about the exhaust I think if you should listen the old R6 with aftermarket exhaust because that engine still the same so it shouldn't be different sound.
I had a similar issue with my '12 ruckus. It wouldnt start unless i heated it up by spraying brake cleaner or carb cleaner into the intake of the carb. Turns out the engine broke-in at around 900 to 1100 miles. Adjusted the vavles and the intake valve was too tight and was staying slightly open and would seal when it warmed up. I think my exhaust wasnt as tight and i added thickness to the shim on those. BUT it might be something to look into. Just to double check the valve adjustments. Maybe the R6 is having the same issues with the valves getting out of spec when the engine breaks in. Let me know if this solves the issue.
haha, sounds like my bike 😂😂 Recently got myself into the Yamaha family, and I'm so glad I did. bought two bikes from shops not running, and I get my Yamaha from a scrap yard and it runs just fine, lmao!! Winter is gonna suck.
Possible Gel Battery? Those batteries need to be "loaded" before they are put to use. I suggest turning on the headlights on for a minute before trying to start (or blipping the starter to "wake up" the battery). But again thats only if it is indeed is a gel battery....
EpilepsyWarning well specifically speaking about a gel battery is that it needs a "wake up". once you demand a charge from the battery, it can then provide the necessary amps/volts/cca whatever needed for a quick start.
it's a well documented "issue" with the 17 R6, most of us just give it some gas when cranking and it starts right up
Froylan Farias i would just poke the seller, its under warranty anyways and any FI car/bike shouldnt need gas when starting up (they advice against it matter of fact). my Polo 2012 got an ECU update some years ago(2013 i think) then it worked flawless down to -25C 👍🏻
Froylan Farias I must be the exception.

Motonosity even looks good in 360p.
I just looked at a new R6 last Saturday and love it I will get one as soon as my house refinance is done. I'm 6'2" 250 lbs and it fits me just fine.
All of the extra work he does with his camera angles... Love it! Keep up the great work Brent!
Yamaha had these problems often back in the days and the reason was that the fuelpump was too slow at coldstarts
they recalled many bikes at this time
For quick cold start, replace the spark plug with denso iridium spark plug. It works for me.
Dude saw you walk out of the HEB around the corner from my house, and I was like wait, is that Motonosity?! Glad to see you haven't had any other issues with the new R6. As for the oil changes, invest in a good thin filter wrench and put dzus fasteners on the girl.

My 2016 r6 acts that way at times, I found it's all in battery life, plain and simple.
congratulations on the baby

Brad Brad that's actually a nice idea! :D
I'd just constantly fear that one would fall and jack up a bike or my wife's car :(
Motonosity You could just use screws instead of nails
you only think you're tired now! ;) congrats on mini Moto again and good luck! It'll be the best ride of your life! Can't wait to see pics (if you choose to do that).
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has that cold start problem haha

The best looking and sounding exhaust I've seen for this bike so far is the yoshimura alpha t full it sounds great
Plan on getting this. Its a Yamaha so imma keep it Japanese.
Possibly try n turn the key on and off twice to prime the fuel pump/lines more..
I would imagine the cold start problem might get worse in colder climates. Not too bad in this video, started right up on the second try, but then again it's usually at least 90 degrees in Texas at this time of year so it does make one wonder how it would handle a cold start in 50 degrees.

mannybianco if i can start my ninja at 2C (around 35.6 fahrenheit) pretty much any FI bike would start at 50 :p

Have you tried to tune it? I'm sure it comes from the factory super lean to pass emissions.
Love the R6. The triple clamp looks so plain. Is it a cast part or milled? It would look so sweet with a milled clamp.
That cold start is slow, because the tune is too lean when cold. Find a proper tuner, and you can fix it!
Manufacturers do the lean start for emissions reasons.

license plates can be secured to the inside of your garage door... then, is moving art

My Yamaha FZ09 starts within .5 seconds every single time, hot or cold. I love it.
Nico Lucia same thing here for my mt-09 street rally.
There's a problem with that, had 4 myself and not seen one take that long to start! I would take it to your local Yamaha dealer
@motonosity I found out that if you ever so slightly turn the throttle whole turning the bike over it makes it almost instantly, it's supposedly because there's "not enough" fuel when it's that cold
I also have the 2017 r6 just to clarify^
My 2012 GSXR 600 starts immediately, every time. Even after not being started for months during the winter, it started immediately. Even so, I would love to get me a new R6, lol. I love my ride, but it's not a Yamaha. I had a brand new '03 R6 back in the day and it is still my favorite bike that I've owned (crashed it).
New title= my license plate collection
Dang Moto, take off the warning sticker on that R6 already!!
The problem with the 2017 R6...
I don't have one :(
My 09 FZ6 (r6 motor) has a somewhat delayed cold start as well... I've grown accustomed to it as I've never had a no start issue.
Just subscribed! The wall of license plates looks sick. Do you have a louisiana one?
Next cold start try, turn on key and let fuel pump stop turn key off and then back on and then start. If fuel pump kicks on twice, it sounds like a pressure prob. Just a thought.
Still a nice ride, even with those small glitches. Bike sounds awesome.
i have the '17 R6, i have the cold start "issue" as well. I just twist the throttle a tiny bit while pressing the start button. works for me
I own a ktm rc 200 whis also has similar riding position as your bike. I have neck pains when i ride this for longer distances. do you face the same issue?
cool video. you actually talk about the cold start issue about the new r6. thank you
I have a 17 r6 too and it does the same thing with cold start. I noticed if you flick the throttle while starting it it'll start up much faster. Must be something with fuel timing !
Lol i love how casual he is when he takes his hands off of the grips.
Yamaha has a fix for it now. I personally own the 2017 Yamaha R6 and I am taking mine in tomorrow to leave it over night to have it fixed.
Better lucky than good! ;-)
Great video! Enjoy these last few days before the baby! Life's about to change, big time!
Just an FYI, all the slip on exhausts from the previous model fit the 2017 R6. 06-present.
Hello, did you r6 vibrate? Mine vibrates extremely hard after 6k rpm, making it barely ridable. Also, i hear like a buzzing sound from under the tank; The bike got like 100 miles on it, gonna go to the dealership next week
Guess I'll wait for the 2018 MY R6's
2014 R6, started cold today, started after the third little click.
How many bikes are you gonna get? seems like you running out of space by the way when you upgrading your R1?
Give it alittle throttle when you're cranking and it starts up. I know we shouldn't have to do that on a new bike but we do it is what it is. I'm assuming it's some kind of mapping issue, we'll see.
Hey moto! when do you plan on mounting your hi-lift jack and winch? i miss the jeep mods!
I noticed lately that you sneak some cool transitions into your videos, it's like one second your here then you're here lol
My '12 R1 can be tempremental with cold starts but it hasn't let me down yet... I'm just used to my CB400 almost seemingly starting before you even touch the button 😂
I'm guessing you can' get the cold start fixed with just a PC5 tune. A lot of bikes come a bit on the lean side from the factory.
The problem is it's about 400cc too small. I hear it has a handy storage compartment under the seat that fits a box of tampons perfectly.
Wow, so touchy. You must ride a lady bike too.
Those Yamaha's you want to start them before the fuel pump finishes priming. so you really want to use the engine start switch as part of the start instead of leaving it on all the time.
I think you should buy an akrapovic exhaust system.
Try some Lucas Ethenol "green" fuel additive. Could be a fuel issue if it's not electric.
The ecu was recalled for bad tune for US fuel since it’s different than the European grades
Does Motonosity love his R6?
@6:34 @10:25
i think its a fuel problem with the new fuel system. try to prime the fuel pump a few times before you cold start it. but thats bullshit i wouldnt be ok with that on a brand new bike.
My 2017 FZ-09 is like this too on cold starts.... Few guys on the FZ09 forum are having issues on there 2017 as well..
Im so jealous of how many vehicles you have ride man!
subed.
from Austin too.
have an 06 r6, have not yet rode it.
Love your videos keep it up motonosity.
R6 or a ktm 690 smc R! I like both but I already dont know wich one choose :(. About your experience on your motard and sportbike... what would you do? Sorry about my english. Greetings from Peru
I have a 2017 I did notice the slow start up but didn't think much of it because my 2016 r6 also didn't always start up right away, took a few seconds
I am wondering if it has issues getting fuel to fire up or maybe the firing order is off. If its that its very odd it would be on a mass such as that. I can understand maybe a few but not the mass.
The CCA on the battery might only be 50... up the CCA to a 100 or 120
mine has as late of a start as yours also. can't complain because like you said it always starts. my fluid resovoir seems kinda lose and wobbles while riding. Tried to tighten it but it doesn't do much. Thats the only other issue I have with the bike
hey about the exhaust I think if you should listen the old R6 with aftermarket exhaust because that engine still the same so it shouldn't be different sound.
Motonosity remember the R1 has Shorai Battery if I'm not mistaken. Maybe a lithium battery might fix issue.
I've been missing daily uploads so much D: but you keep doing adult stuff!!!
Let me know if this solves the issue.
oh and I am a motorcycle tech. Yamaha r6 usually does the e second start. They have had issues with the new ones. and transmission issues.
haha, sounds like my bike 😂😂 Recently got myself into the Yamaha family, and I'm so glad I did. bought two bikes from shops not running, and I get my Yamaha from a scrap yard and it runs just fine, lmao!! Winter is gonna suck.
I have a 07 CBR 600 & in the manual , it says to leave the run button switched on when the bike is turned off. Does your manual say the same thing?
Possible Gel Battery? Those batteries need to be "loaded" before they are put to use. I suggest turning on the headlights on for a minute before trying to start (or blipping the starter to "wake up" the battery). But again thats only if it is indeed is a gel battery....
wouldnt having the headlights on for a minute kind of defeat the purpose of having a bit faster cold start time
EpilepsyWarning well specifically speaking about a gel battery is that it needs a "wake up". once you demand a charge from the battery, it can then provide the necessary amps/volts/cca whatever needed for a quick start.
Totally unrelated but did you wire a key ignition into your crf? and if you did how so? maybe you can point me to a video or article?
You should put plates on your ceiling and the inside of the garage door👌🏼
We know you love the R6 lol when the upgrades coming motonosity 👍🏻💪🏻
