- In this weeks episode we travel into the High Sierra region of California to visit a dynamic young family who are living big in a yurt home on their 30 acre homestead / permaculture property.

Traditionally used by nomads in Central Asia, yurts are much less common in the west, however these well insulated, portable structures are certainly starting to become a popular option amongst those seeking an affordable, alternative home.

Brett and Beth together with their son Sequoia have established a beautiful lifestyle in their yurt and on their land, where they grow food, live (almost) off the grid and are working on regenerating the land through permaculture.

I wish more people would understand that Yurt originates from Mongolia and we call it “Ger”. We have been using it forever. Most Mongolians use it to this day. My grandma have one and I grew up in it with her. At that time I didn’t realize how special it was. I am glad people are finding our ger(yurt) super efficient.

Biggest one i ever saw
My wife and I chose not to have children, however, if we had done it differently, we most definitely would have wanted to do something like this for our child. I think this is so important, especially in today's throw-away society, to know what is necessary to live a fruitful life. I believe I would homeschool as long as it made my child feel fulfilled. I realize that maybe at a certain age, a child might want something else as far as friends and such, but as I've watched many UA-cam channels on different styles of living and raising families, I believe we are coming back around to what's important not only for us as humans, but for the earth and sustaining a lifestyle that is conducive to giving back to the earth and taking care of it as it takes care of us. My wife is great about buying second hand, and recycling which helps us to not only care for the earth but to save money. We love what this couple has done and as we near retirement, we will be able to sell our home and live a much smaller life with a smaller footprint. These videos inspire and excite us! We have lived tiny before, but as our parents have gotten older, they needed to be close to family which is why we have a house/duplex at this point, so they can have a place to live and still provide all of us with privacy. I'm not trying to write a book here, so I will close by wishing all the best to this amazing family and thanking them for sharing their lives with us!
"Yurt" is a Turkish word and meaning "homeland" .
Nomadic Turks where live Central Asia (Turkistan) and Mongolian people generally use it .

I'm not really sure if those round walls will securely carry that roof. Especially in a storm situation. I really love those geodesic domes tho. A quite large one would be amazing imho.

Really impressed with how immaculate everything is! Glad to see solid walls, seems much safer against intruders, 2- and 4_footed kinds, insulated, can run pipes and wiring through, etc. Beautiful inside and outdoors. 😃👏🌲🌲🏔️

This whole reclamation idea is the way to go. It keeps useful material out of the landfills, and it makes building a home more affordable. I am looking at that kitchen and thinking that it would have been a crime to toss it all into the dumpster. Good cabinets and counters, double sinks, an island. All useful and much needed. Think about it; all over North America people are renovating or tearing down buildings. And all that is headed into landfill. What about recycling the good stuff? A decent one room condo is going for over $250 000.00 these days. And it took less than $50 000.00 to build this house. Think about it.
Habitat for humanity restore does just that. It takes donations of furniture and building supplies ie: cabinets, lights, sinks, doors, countertop, toilets.... and then sells them and uses the money to help others. And they pick up all you do is call and make an appointment and they come and pick it up whatever your getting rid of. It counts as a donation to shop there so you can also write off the stuff you buy in your taxes 👍🏻 and you keep good stuff from rotting in the dump. I’ve found so really great stuff for a fraction of what I would have paid in store
Sandra Nelson I have reclaimed a lot of stuff over the years. Keep in mind that reclaimed materials and furniture can be very economical, and in some cases older stuff that is reclaimed is a lot better than newer things. But, the romance of reclaiming stuff fades for many people when faced with the time investiture need to make reclaimed materials actually work for you. There is an enormous time investment that is required.

Yes, so true. I like Habitat ReStore as well. I've gotten such good things for free (on the side of the road) and cheap and I'm incorporating into my builds as we speak.
@@Amanda_in_wonderland sadly it doesn't work sometimes. We has a habitat for humanity store in Virginia Beach and it closed after a couple years. I was sad to see that go. I think they didn't give it enough time to catch on or something. One would think it would almost automatically succeed. We as a culture have become such a throw away society and its driving force is corporate greed.
Just superb way of living... I am from India, and here our ancestors followed organic lifestyle including building techniques and food, everything... I agree lol. It is wonderful but, I live "traditional" and haven't had a dishwasher in years. But it is a great way to raise a family I think. Going back to our roots so to speak. Although, I applaud the composting toilet as well I wondered if it draws animals being all open like that?🤔
Tiny living is as much about your impact on the environment as the square footage you occupy.
Not tiny, but we like to showcase all kinds of alternatives and I think it's healthy to break away from our usual every now and then. :)

@@nealm6764 Yes, and it's new for them at the moment. After a while, it won't be so new and they will probably have the same attitude as those who grew up on the land.
I didn't see any sanctimonious or superior attitudes. I just saw how thrilled they are to be able to give their youngster this kind of life.
We have largely been separated from nature. It's great that they recognize how important it is. I am leaving the suburbs and doing something similar with my family. I grew up in the country, and I miss it.
@@judylloyd7901 Yes. I agree. All I saw was a couple expressing the importance of self-reliance and respect for nature. I think a lot of people forget that those in cities do not naturally think this way. It's very important and what I see is excitement.

Inspiring. Most of us dream but few do. I feel so disconnected from the outside living in a small 4 wall apartment. And what a gift they have given their child, to be able to learn about growing food and living with animals and nature. God Bless then.
This home is absolutely gorgeous! The couple was so talented, wise, and artistic. The husband knows so much about living off the land, I could listen to him all day. It’s so refreshing to see people like this who have chosen their path wisely and unplugged from city life and all its traps. I hope to see more videos from this lovely couple.
I love homes like this where everything in it has a story. That makes living there so special. And their son is growing up in a gorgeous environment. He will be able to live off the land and have an amazing life. What a beautiful family. We have an off grid property. Only 12 acres. But we are talking about possibly adding a few more acres. A man who has about 100 acres behind us has offered to sell us a little more land. I like the idea of having at least 20 acres but if we can get enough to have 25 that would be nice for my husband. He hunts. And I might try at some point. But I think the animals are so beautiful. We have a lot of deer and turkeys. hope we can have something as nice as this family one day. I think this is beautiful. The yurt is such a pleasing home size and shape and to put drywall and insulation is brilliant. They have great taste and truly have worked at making a very light on the land home. I just visited the Kogi Indians in Colombia who have a very strong belief about being good to the earth. Their houses are similar and they garden in a similar way. No livestock or really big torn up tracts. If they were able to afford 30 acres in rural CA (which is no where near the price of the crappiest home in the SF Bay Area), then more power to them. They are protecting and being great stewards and that is likely why they had the opportunity. Bless you both!! I'd love to learn more about your life.

I so enjoyed this one! It's inspiring and I'm very envious! Loved seeing the little one with red stained face from berries and him making his way through the garden with his hand open with anticipation of what he was going to pick next! Happy people living in happy places makes me happy!
They should line the walls with tapestry rugs and make it really a beautiful showcase the way the Mongolians do! Just love yurts! They are amazing!!!! So beautiful and easy to setup with little need for much and everything is typically cosmetic so it's very simple to do especially with nomadic farming. 💚💚💚💚💚💚stay green fingered 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
PS I would consider figuring out a way to offer heated flooring if you plan to stay put in one spot, only if that's an option. But for basic nomadic living that wouldn't work too easily unless the flooring could also be disassembled and reassembled every move. But it would be worth the luxury to have better heating especially in this cold climate.

Maya Brits maybe they are well informed and understand they are claiming to be off-grid (meaning you are not connected to the electrical grid) yet they are connected to the electrical grid. They use propane etc. drywall and insulation in a yurt. Very confusing. They just grew a beard and dreads and claim to be off grid and eco friendly. They just have a garden is all.
@@organicthug5220 more often the slang 'off-grid' is not referring to an electrical grid, rather it encompasses a larger topographical grid. They are removing themselves from the physical distribution of needs that come with typical living arrangements and immersing themselves in a 'more' primitive lifestyle. We should be trying to understand the nature of one another's language as opposed to disfavoring right away. They seem like happy beautiful people

@@chelseahartshorn3509 Wrong. "Off gird" first and foremost means not relying on utility companies and the government. You can invent whatever it means for yourself I suppose, but being hooked up to the Electric grid is an immediate diqualifier to actually being off gird, or "mostly off grid". It doesn't make them bad people, or not a lovely family, it just means they aren't off grid, so relax with the overwrought drama.
Ppl will always have somthing smart to say no matter what no matter how well ppl are living there’s always a negative comment coming from every direction

Not every tiny home makes me cry tears of joy, but a *Yurt* of all places, lol! This nest is soooo beautifully laid out inside with gorgeous woods & woven crafts all over,vand the glasswork, wow, nice job!!👍🏻😄 This place is absolutely STUNNING!!
I knew someone 40 yrs ago who named her son Cedar Robin, so l think it's cute & cool that their wee one is named Sequoia!👍🏻
And this precious little angel is being treated to a very unforgettable childhood! As an older person, this is the way l think more kids would benefit being raised like. Less video games and more playing outside in nature.
My goodness that kitchen area just screams to be used enjoyed every day -- it would certainly entice me into enjoying cooking + baking again, like l did when my kids were young.

My Mongolian ancestry has been calling me to a yurt for sometime now.
Do it. You won't be sorry. If you don't do you may regret it all your life. It won't be easy, you will have to do things when its cold, when its wet, when its hot.....You can't ever say "I will do that tomorrow" because one day you will wake up and tomorrow will be gone.

I am a retired builder,, [ not by choice, retired per SS physicians unfortunately stroke/tumors/neuropathy in rt foot] . I have remodeled many many homes and used thrift stores, 2nd hand stores dump, even found great items in other people's trash being tossed out. I love the way you designed the home, addition, land around you & most of all besides the 30 acres my other fav is the kitchen layout Beth designed. Wow, that is a kitchen to die for. my ex girlfriend and I did one large project in Northport Long Island New York together. We remodeled an old 5 story rooming house on Main st near the ocean. It had 37 rooms I believe in it when we started tearing down walls etc Together we laid out/designed 7 seven fully brand new condos/apartments. Getting kitchen/bath cabinets from others who were remodeling all over Long Island. What a challenge but what a result. It took me & couple helpers almost 11 months to finish. We did soup to nuts. Your kitchen reminds me of the nicest 2 bedroom one we built. All of your furnishings too bring back so many good memories for me, you Both have great taste. I applaud you Both for the Beautiful home you've created especially for your son to grow up and learn all you are teaching him. We’re off grid and eco friendly, but bought a prefab yurt, are connected to the electric grid, and have a gas hookup. Basically we couldn’t handle off grid so we fake it.

Gorgeous! The stone under their stove is a really nice touch. They did a great job.
That is truly s nice Yurt and something I could live in permanently, as it seems people always use it as a temporary dwelling until their real house is built
I think most people don't use yurts permanently because they aren't meant to be permanent structures, they breakdown within a couple years. So you have to replace and repair often. Making them more work and expense in the long run.
Since they are made to be easily taken down and relocated, it is possible people are concerned thieves might haul it away.
I don't like that you can't use the windows as emergency exits, and yurts usually only have one exit door. Oddly, people tend to put their wood burning stove next to the door, too!
A great set up for raising a family and I wish them every success but I did have a chuckle when I saw the dishwasher :)
I chuckled at the oven after they showed her using a solar oven. I have a feeling that solar oven is not a part of their everyday cooking.
@@michaelb1761 it is used a LOT in the summer :) the yurt gets pretty hot and I avoid cooking inside as much as possible.
@sophia pinella Same. I don't have a dishwasher, it's just me and cats :) water is expensive here and I don't mind washing dishes. I like the idea of a tiny house but where would I have my sewing and art studio? lol

Irene Ewens Nowadays dishwashers are very effective and most likely run on less water than if you do your dishes by hand.

People live in ramshakle houses all over the US. Visit upstate NY, West Virginia, or any other rural part of the US. It's not really an unusual way to live. I wish they had forgone toxic drywall and insulation and opted for a natural hay insulation solution and clay walls. I also want to add that one can definitely live frugally and minimally in cities, towns and the countryside without having to resort to this sort of "build it from scratch and escape society" living. Sometimes working with what you already have is best.
I feel like they were the kind of people who bragged about not having a TV while watching netflix on their wi-fi in their city days. :-/
It also seems a lot of these products that do this are very well off financially. Yes, I hear people say they haven't had to for 6 years now, BUT they spend all their spare time on youtube lol.
@@brandyatracey3003 Rest assured there is a trust fund involved. It's the same as people purchasing brand new teslas and claiming they are "green" as opposed to buying a used honda with mad gas milage, that doesn't demand new resources for production, and endevoring to walk or bike as much as possible. They could have bought a foreclosed house or cabin in the country with acreage and farmed that. Doing things from scratch is always the least sustainable method.

Anjali Rajadhyaksha I think a lot of people don’t do this out of fear. They’ve become so dependent on having a 9-5 and a store down the street.
