Shigeru Miyamoto thought this game was running on a modded SNES as he couldn't believe how good the music was.

Miyamoto once said the best 2D platforms on the market were Super Mario World, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Plok. He was really keen on this game during development. Don't really remember if that opinion carried on after release.

I hope it gets a reboot, it seems pretty beloved especially in the UK. Which is fitting, since it feels like an Amiga game that just never came out on that system. I say that as a high praise of course.

You nailed it: it's one of the best hidden gems on SNES, the only real problem being how incredibly long it is with no way to save your progress. Fleas take exactly three hits to kill, their color reliably changes each time they take damage.
The thing is that they have a big after-hit invincibility time. Interestingly, this timer lasts even longer on the EASY difficulty for some reason, which always made me think the fleas were actually tougher on easy until I figured out that only hits count when they AREN'T flashing.
Hits with super weapons seem to bypass the invincibility, too, making them the most effective way to fight fleas.

Plok is such a gem of a game. The artstyle, the gameplay, the soundtrack and the general feeling of it is just so unique and unforgettable. I liked all those weird and courageous ideas. Especially the idea with playing Plok's grandfather somehow made me feel kind of nostalgic for a past I never experienced, if that makes any sense. Unfortunately I never made it through the whole game, because of those last few vehicle levels, which just weren't my cup of tea. Nevertheless I love watching speedruns of Plok. Adding to this, I just realized that the speedruns in this game are still very competitive, with a new wr just being achieved 5 days ago.

It has the best and most creative soundtrack on the SNES. I think it undersells it a little to compare most of the tracks to Yoshi Island and Turrican, not that they do not have outstanding soundtracks too. This Prog rock comes from insparations of the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and so many other synth/rock/jazz 70-80's jams sessions.

I'm surprised you didn't cover this game before. It's certainly one of the most creative and unique SNES platformers, not far behind Yoshi's Island in terms of quality, in my opinion. Yeah, it gets really tough, especially the vehicle levels towards the end, and I think you need more than 2 hours to complete it, maybe 3 or 4

Ou man, it´s Plok! =)) I found this game quite fun to play back then and had a great time with it. Never finished this game because the later stages were quite challenging as I remember and it didn´t help not having a Save-Feature. Hehe But appart from that I liked it a lot! It´s kind of hard for me to explain but: The whole game had a sort of like funky feel to it. =P It´s a shame that we never saw a sequel becaus in my opinion Plok was one of those 16-Bit Jump´n Run Mario/Sonic - Counterpart´s that had potential. I mean look at those visuals and listen to those tune, cool! =D Post Scriptum - And what was that about Plok´s Grandfather suddenly digging out Al Bundy´s Shoe?! ? Hahahaha =D =D

Excellent and accurate review. If you're a fan of platformers and haven't tried Plok yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

My cousin had this game growing up and I LOVED it. I recently purchased it for $15aud, a bargain imo. Never finished it then and still haven’t to this day although I haven’t played it on an emulator with save states. Even though it’s aged extremely well, a remake with the ability to save would be amazing.

That is an unreasonably excellent approximation of an electric guitar. How dare they.

plok was great. I recommend it all the time. plok is an example of almost everything done right when a similar game called super widget did almost everything wrong.

I bought this game after watching this video. I looooove the music! Some songs remind me of 70s prog rock, amazing stuff!
The game is funny and the right kind of challenging *EDIT* OHH it's hard right now but if there's no saves...hmm
Thanks for all that you are doing SNES drunk!!

I completed Plok, looking at the comments I'm 30 plus years later chuffed with myself. It helped a lot that I only had about 4 games so had plenty of opportunity to play it. The music was outstanding and really helped make the game so playable

I played through this game a few years ago and thought - "Wow, this is really hard!"
Then I found out it was made by some of the same people who did Battletoads on the NES and I was like - "Ohhh, that makes sense!"
I still managed to beat it eventually, but I probably won't ever put myself through it again, lol.

what most people don't know is that plok has a very complex warp system, wich cuts the game on half. still, very dificult, I managed to beat this beast on a snes, 10/10 would do it again

This game was quite well known back in the day, and I think it's safe to say that it's actually a pretty freaking hard game to beat. If it was worth playing then...then *why in the world wouldn't it be worth playing today?!?!*

Has anybody ever wiki'd the story plot for this game? It is bar none literally one of the most stupidest, nonsensical plots ever put together (if you could call it that, that is put together). The game itself, esp. for the time as far as when it came out as far as music and graphics was pretty nice tho, no doubt. I've actually never played it but I always wanted to. but for whatever reason I wanted to weeki the plot of the story due to the fact that the last boss has the "flea Queen". The plot of the game described by wiki is so stupid it killed my desire to even wanna play the game anymore. It's literally that stupid. I just honestly can't believe with anything inside me that a grown person designed the story plot of that game

I played this game for my first time a few days ago before watching this vid. What he said happened, I played the first few levels I thought it was going to be a wack game where it was going to be like this the whole time, and thought it was going to be short. I stopped playing after the first few levels and my thoughts on the game were wrong after watching this. I'll be giving this a second go

I'll just note that _Plok_ does have an "easy mode" - however, if you play the game on easy mode you won't see every level or be able to properly complete the game.

This game was in some extent the Yoshi's Island inspiration - it's so unfair it didn't took to the top charts - so unfair Miyamoto ditched it =(

I played it as a youth, and I'd say the more progress you make and the longer the levels are, the more boring it'll get. And the end of the game is pure boldness and made me hate this game since today, even if the soundtrack is very cool.

This is basically Yoshi's Island. From the graphics engine to the play style and target system.
