Here, in the heart of Russia, on the left bank of the Volga between Kazan and Nizhniy Novgorod, live the Finno-Ugric Mari people. There are some 671 000 Maris in total. Anthropologists consider them a Sub-Uralic people. The Maris are divided into three ethnic sub-groupings: the Hill, Meadow, and Eastern Maris. Meadow Maris live in the central and eastern part of the Republic of Mari El. Every year, on 12 July, the Maris celebrate the pagan holiday of Sürem. It is their most important midsummer festival.

The religion of the Mari seem to have similarities with the Druid beliefs and with the Nordic Viking beliefs - just hints of these ancient practices.
