The more people pay for meat, that money pays the person to do this. Rape and killing animals is made possible by the person who pays for meat/eggs/dairy/fish products. Can you post back in 5 years? Veganism usually takes about 7-8 years (depending on how much fat you had on your body to begin with) before it becomes unsustainable. Oh, and you may want to start saving up for new teeth. A diet consisting mainly of sugar will wreak havoc on your dental hygiene. When you do go back to a diet with animal products (even just milk and eggs), make sure you go organic and fresh. None of the factory produced shit. You can expect then to live a long life, although it will likely be shortened if you spend too long on the vegan diet. I pity you if you live in the USA. The general quality of meat over there is appallingly bad, although there are exceptions. Your government is literally trying to kill you. For anybody reading this: Eat locally produced, organic food. Include fresh meat and in-season fruit in your diet. Eat more organs, like liver and kidneys (ONLY from healthy animals). Highly nutritious. You follow this diet and cut out processed foods, you're going to be very healthy for all your life. Mental health is also just as important. Your body will do anything and everything it can to continue surviving.

Valid concerns for our world. I wonder why meatless burgers are more expensive if veganism is being sold as using less resources to produce? If you look at low income groups where starvation is real, plant protein have always been cheaper. Commercialisation models that make it more expensive are self defeating to this cause.

Veganism faces negativity because lots of vegans make asses out of themselves. This is so important. I'm not a full vegan yet, but I"m working towards that. And especially as more and more vegan options are available it will be even easier to eat that way!

I am from India and I am proud to say what is followed now by western people is already followed by our Ancestors centuries ago.I am Hindu by religion and in our scriptures ,vedas, hrishimunis, gurus are teaching us to be vegan already long time ago.
Used to be a crazy meat eater. But now I feel better than ever, and vegan food is really good if you actually put some effort in reading a recipe and start cooking. Some people just decide to be blind and say "vegan food is disgusting" and they maybe tried it once from the supermarket. It's really easy to talk nonsense, but why don't you actually try first?
Well yeah, of course you’re healthier if you were a crazy meat eater. You vegans don’t understand that you’re “healthier” (because really, you’re not) because you weren’t eating correctly in the first place! If you had a balanced diet you would have been way better off. Also, if you eat more veggies, you eat more pesticides and more cancer.
Jack Black It's stated in Vedas, that while fasting or offering prayers, one should completely refrain from non vegetarian diet. It's prohibited to carry leather accessories inside some of the biggest Hindu Shrines like Vaishno Devi.
@Jack Black I agree, but now more youths in India are adopting veganism. It's a good development in my opinion. I myself refrain from using leather articles, fur coats, etc.
This is a brilliant message for veganism and it's awesome that this farmer has made that positive transition to plant based farming. All farmers need to do this and if they don't know how, they should have good support from the government to do make the change. A vegan World is coming and I can't wait. Better for the Planet, the animals and each other. Everyone's an animal lover deep down, but like the farmer said in this video, it's a supply and demand thing, if consumers / customers buy horrible meat and dairy, the meat and dairy industry supply it. Everyone makes a difference so don't appeal to futility. Go vegan =)
I've been vegan for 4 months, and vegetarian for 5 years before that and now I can see there was no benefits to being vegetarian really. Everything I ate contained cheese, but now when I see cheese it makes me want to throw up, can't believe I actually used to eat it and I don't get how others still do 🤢.
I LOVE the fact that the Economist is talking about this! This wouldn't have been possible 20 years ago. Things are changing and people are waking up. I have been vegan for 4 years and vegetarian for 20 years. The last 4 years have been the healthiest years of my life. Anyone can do it. Any little step help, even reducing your animal protein consumption to say once a week helps! People are afraid of change but change can lead to amazing things. #govegan

Depressed plant- supply and demand would take care of that. Animals are grown and born due to demand. If less people ate animals, less female animals would be raped to reproduce. The more people pay for meat, that money pays the person to do this. Rape and killing animals is made possible by the person who pays for meat/eggs/dairy/fish products.

Valid concerns for our world. I wonder why meatless burgers are more expensive if veganism is being sold as using less resources to produce?
If you look at low income groups where starvation is real, plant protein have always been cheaper. Commercialisation models that make it more expensive are self defeating to this cause.
This is probably due to scale and subsidies. With growing demand, the products will become cheaper and hopefully, governments will switch subsidies from meat and dairy industries to plants and vegetables.
So right. The starving countries eat plant based. What does that tell us about veganism?
...are you kidding? The only reason meat is as cheap as it is is because it’s massively subsidised by the government. And it’s STILL more expensive than all the products I buy. The poorest people in the world generally consume an almost entirely vegan diet without even knowing it...

Well this is a welcome change from the negativity veganism often faces. Thanks for an informative video. #VGang!
Veganism faces negativity because lots of vegans make asses out of themselves. The cold truth is that more people than not eat meat, so just saying they shouldn't eat meat at all is a bad approach, we should try to convince people to reduce meat consumption even if its only by 1/3, anything is a start when people just flat out reject the premise of veganism/vegetarianism most of the time.
Jared Lapierre Most vegans are not asses XD. There are actually millions of vegans, most just don’t label themselves or don’t do activism. I find that most of the negativity comes from people being threatened when we suggest that their way of life is harmful, which it is. I try to be as respectful as I can, and I often build a report by telling people how I used to call myself a carnivore and rip into steaks and sashimi before I finally made the transition to veganism for environmental reasons. Only then did I see the horrors of the animal agriculture industry and come to understand the cognitive dissonance that I used to have and that everyone who consumes animal products has.

Indians feed the waste from silk production (the high energy, high protein pupeas) to their herbivore cows so as to dispose of them without them rotting & leading to fly & disease issues because it's against their religion to eat them themselves & fix the malnutrition issues in the same way the other large silk producing country of China did.
Their malnutrition is similar to in countries like America where there is fast food induced malnutrition due to lifestyle choices, so you could just as easily ask why poor & time poor people in America produce children when they're not willing to give them the wholesome, nutritious diet they need for best development & can't afford proper health care or education for their children.
