    Hey Nothando! I loved having this chat with you and hope my answers shed a little light on how to find work as QS in the UK, as well providing some more information on the profession as a whole.
    Joe from Metroun (the other guys also say Hey!)

      I don't think there's much point! I have an MSc in QS'ing, I can't see how a DR would advance your career anymore than becoming chartered/ experienced. Your major advantage is you're a woman. It's a lot easier to get hired as a QS and become chartered as they're trying to diversify the profession. At least in the UK.

    Can you help to find a QS job in UK?

  • @thehalokidster

    Just some of my thoughts as per my experience. I transfered into the industry at 40 with absolutely no experience. I got a MSc in QS'ing, it's not valued anymore than a degree as the MSc is a 'conversion degree', meaning it's the 4yrs compressed into 1 year and it's hard work! Working hrs can be 50-60hrs per week, depending on your workload/ efficiency. There is also no overtime pay, just your base pay and possibly a bonus if you work on the contractors side! The work can be very stressful juggling many projects/ tasks especially in your 1st couple of years learning etc. There is a deep learning curve to go through (years), if you have no experience, it's even harder. The money sounds good but when you take into account the hrs you work, the demands, the cost of living in the UK, the travel etc, it's not that great. General Advice: Pick your company with caution, I barely got any training in a few of them and was expected to be able to hit the ground running and just somehow pick the job up whilst working (straight out of Uni). Make sure you have a mentor/ QS colleagues available to help with that, otherwise it'll be hell! Consultancies are more professional, but skill expectations will be higher, but you've a better chance of getting chartered/ diversifying. You are more likely to be screamed at on the contractors side (less professional). QS'ing is not an easy job, it can take over your life at times. Just general advice, different companies can obviously differ!

      Hi,
      Is it that bad?

    • @thehalokidster
      @thehalokidster 2 роки тому

      @@reshranpise Yep! I've worked in 4 companies so far (small & huge), much of what I said carries over into all of them with some differences in intensity! But I'm still doing the job, so it must be worth it, I guess! I can only talk for the UK. If you are not experienced, or not an amazingly fast learner and you hate the feeling of not knowing how to do something, that you're expected to just pick it up after a 5min demo, this isn't the job for you (in the UK). As you'll have that feeling for years. If you have issues with stress, or always feeling thinly spread, it's not for you also.

    hi m from india with 6 years experience as senior site engineer and as project co ordinator but no experience as qs.so these are my questions.
    1.can i get job at uk as (junior or asst.)qs with ug degree and site experience.
    2.do i necessarly need to do a pg degree on qs to get a job at uk.
    3.what other job options can i seek at uk with current experience.

    • @thehalokidster
      @thehalokidster 2 роки тому

      No idea about you being allowed into the UK/ right to work here. But with your experience and understanding of construction tech, you have a major advantage and will find the degree/ education part a lot easier than many. Yes, you'll need a degree ultimately, but consultancies etc hire people whilst they study, that's a n option. Also with a prior degree you can jump on a a MSc course, which is 1-2 years. You biggest issue is being allowed to work in the UK. But if you could, you'll advance quick, mainly due to your understanding of construction tech.
