I grew up a few blocks from Engine 42 on Monroe Ave. When I was 8 in 1965, Engine 42 was the first to arrive at our apartment building at 3 am and quickly knocked down a fire in the basement just under our apartment. Paint and solvents were being stored in the basement and the fire could have gotten away from them quickly, but they did a great job. I was in the street in just my pajamas and it was in the 30s. I was freezing and one of the firefighters wrapped me in his turnout jacket to keep me warm (literally gave me the coat off his back). That night inspired me to become involved in the fire service, which i have done for the past 40 plus years.
This channel simply has the best FDNY response vids… period! Rock on! 🔥 (There are a few other FDNY video channels out there, but this channel’s video skills are well above those others… the video actually captures the full story of events… plus a detailed description is usually always given) 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very deceptive fire presentation, light smoke, nothing in the basement, no heat. Kudos to Experienced Command for not returning units and continuing to investigate.
That civilian in the B wing telling them that the fire was in the walls across the courtyard is an absolute champ at 6:30. The 19 should give that guy a thanks or something. Sometimes, the people that live in the place know their buildings a lot better than we do. Sometimes.
Although he was correct, The guy was cursing everyone out for like 20 minutes and wouldn’t stop yelling. The members already knew they had fire extending up the walls.
@@FDNYResponseVideos People are bizarre.
Do you actually think the FDNY didn't know they had fire in the walls??? That they needed that nut to tell them???
You cannot always count on civilian accounts
@@jamesstasio6697 Ain't that the truth!
This again reinforces the saying that no call is ever ordinary or the same. This started off like it was going to be nothing. An hr later 4 alarms. Love the videos
Maybe should have extinquished it.
My brother was a firefighter and the fire chiefs in Jackson New Jersey I know how hard you guys job is but the end the gratification is more than what you are doing I pray for you everyday God bless even if you didn't know my brother he was a good guy
This fire was nothing short of eerie. For the longest time just smoke sneaking out of a lot of small places. Hidden but growing and growing. Good job sticking it out. It would have been easy to wrap up this video early and head home.
Oh I did go home lol. Went home & had time to make a coffee and went right back.
@@dawnm1292 yes unfortunately UA-cam deemed it to violate their guidelines. I am currently working on an appeal as the video was 100% for documentary, educational and historical purposes. No word on the results as of yet.

Apartments should have a Fire escape, its insane to see how Apartments with more the 1 Level/Floor high have NO Fire Ecapes, specialy real high buildings
I totally agree! They need to reinforce laws, fire escapes, and no obstacles around the buildings, for the fireman to get their trucks and equipment thru.
This building had fire escapes. You didn’t see them? The big difference between this fire, aside from being a much smaller building with six floors instead of 19, and the one with all the fatalities is it didn’t spread so fast so there was time to evacuate.
I’ve never understood why most firescapes are in the kitchen the main area for a fire to start, why aren’t they in a bedroom or living room
Newer buildings have multiple layers of fire protection that prevent fire from spreading. They’ve no doubt saved many lives. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen this past week, simple failures can lead to disaster.
@@julissavillar7153 You stated the very reason in your statement. that is the most likely place for fires to start. The most likely time for a kitchen fire is when cooking is happening and the people doing that are in the Kitchen. Hence the need for a fast egress from the fire.
A big thank you to our FDNY on the job at 181 Tremont in the Bronx on 1/9/2022. Unfortunately 19 people died including 9 children. God rest their souls.
This is not the fire that killed 19 on Sunday. Seeing a lot of comments mixing up this fire from Saturday with Sunday’s tragedy.
I wonder if it was uploaded to mislead people and profit off the high rise fire? Seems strange the timing of this video :/ Unless it was uploaded before the fire?
… the video has the upload date clearly visible in the description. Uploaded over 24 hours prior to the fire today. The video of the fire today is also on our channel.
I'd listen to radio traffic via app. Thx for the video. Now I can see what I'm listen to. 👍
Thank you John and all the fire personnel.
Excellent coverage of a very difficult fire to fight.
It must've been frustrating to not be able to find the source of the fire. Great job, FDNY!
Ok so I live out in the sticks,it’s still weird to see them have to fight to get in to fight the fire. We just don’t have the gates and bars on anything like this. Hats off the the brave ones going in👍😀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yes, but it's not the first time they have to do that and I think it takes way too long. They should be better equipped. And better prepared.
They were trying to limit the damage to that door because they were just checking for extension in that store. Had it actually been on fire they would have simply cut the gate down rather than try to disable the locking mechanism.
@@FDNYResponseVideos I see! Thanks
@@Ottedikkie Well, if it was easy that would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it? Maybe you could show them how to do it?
You may not have gates n bars but like the recent Boulder County, Colorado fire, any neighborhood can burn to the ground with the right weather conditions or other factors.
Wow I live near there, came out the subway in the morning and noticed the damage going all the way up to the top floor.
One of my favorite jobs of all time prior to retiring out of the service, was flying the bucket… nothing beats that!

I dont understand why they didn't Evac the building? Doesn't matter how bad you think the fire is..
Different fire. No injuries at this one.
I can't believe how people just block the hydrant. You can tell it's been there for a while with the snow on it.
Welcome to NYC? As a firefighter we would just sting the supply hose through the car Backdraft style.
@@amtraktraveler9118 They deserve it. I'm born and raised in NY but I always see people block the hydrant for short periods. That car looked like it was parked there for at least half the day with all that untouched snow piled on it.
The van looked like it had been there for a month. Doubt it even runs.

They went from talking about "residual steam" and the fire being knocked to an hour later and the entire building is on fire, I mean wait what?🤔

Is it fair to assume that you’ve never fought a significant fire in a building constructed similar to this one?

Amazing how all of this happened from a battery

I don't buy it either

@@joeburros4878 So you're saying it's a cover up? That a battery didn't catch fire? I'm amazed, like Gary TheFireman, but my amazement is of people like you that for whatever reason believe everything is a conspiracy. Those batteries explode and/or burst into flames on a regular basis and have caused a hell of a lot of fires. before we had those radios the police and fire had to talk face to face
Why modern building codes have prevented these kinds of fires. The walls in this building may not have had any fire breaks. A modern building should have fire breaks in the walls.
This is a old building, obviously.
The firemen could get better cutting tools. They work hard to cut through gates and locks.
If the city wasn't so busy funding BS social experiments maybe.

@@catdooley4616 this was not the fire
Lithium ion batteries. Again.
Another fire with one source ends up on multiple floors! NYC needs to educate citizens about CLOSING DOORS on rooms with a fire in it. And absolutely close a door to an apartment with a fire in any room, no matter how large or small.
I learned the value of closing doors 50 years ago when my supervisor’s house caught fire. When one of his kids got home from school, the fire department was there and wouldn’t let him in the house. A neighbor has seen a whisp of smoke. The fire had used all the oxygen available and was not burning. It was still HOT. Opening the entry door would have set off an explosive backdraft.
The family had a habit of every one closing the bedroom doors before leaving the house or going to sleep. Because of that habit, the fire was confined to the living area.
this fire spread upward through the wall spaces behind the drywall. Closing doors had no effect on this fire.
@@CommandFireApparatus Thank you for the reply. Are fire Marshall’s or other officials working on a way to address the problem with those batteries? I watched a video a few days ago where a lithium-ion battery came off a bike and was on fire in the snow. Firefighters threw all kinds of chemicals at it and it wouldn’t go out. A household fire extinguisher would be useless to keep the fire from spreading.
Tuff job well done 👍
Is there a firestarter in NYC as there are too many fires!
Big city with a fair amount of careless idiots that do stupid things and accidentally start a lot of fires.
Largest city in the US.

Film Department of New York has the most realistic videos.
Is this the second fire in new york
Surprised they didn't hook that $#!7box and pull it away from that hydrant.
Big old pre war ordinary type building. Building can handle fire but you have to expect fire extention vertically via wasteline pipes and dump waiter. When these type of fires occur within communitys with understaffed fire department personnel and/or volunteer fire departments the out come of the fire is not promising and usually ends up with a total loss of structure. Becauses FDNY is properly staffed and with great FF's and leadership these type of fires "room and content " fires with extention into the structure get extinguished. This fire is considered a A plus extinguishment and because they saved the building and occupants the media has no idea of the "What if"
Reminds me of seeing Grenfell Tower fire on the news in England. I wonder if the reason the building there was lost was a combination of poor apartment planning, lack of firefighters, and no pre-planned idea of how to fight a fire in a high rise building.
It’s relieving to see the FDNY is capable and had a plan.
32 people have life threatening injuries. I just don’t want to down play the fact that the issues you mentioned are factors. These guys need more funding because the jobs they do require communities investing more into fire department personnel, equipment, and support. These guys did an amazing job and deserve much credit. They are facing death and we know they saved countless others. Let this video be a reason everyone continues and increasing fund fire and police departments. You analysis was spot on too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Can you explain why they do what they’re doing for us laypeople.
There was a fire in the building and they were extinguishing it....
How did it spread to every floor? Echoes of Grenfell Tower (cladding at fault) here or not?
The word cladding gives me low key ptsd from the Grenfell tower fire 😔 poor people!
@@emmbee6552 understandably. Horrible event, and horrible (government) response
Please inspect the buildings to make them safer😩😩
Do these building have special fire conduits or something? It's weird why it spreads in such ways, especially since the FD is there. Bad building design?
yeah i wondered that also, like it creeps through something and comes out in another area.
It spreads inside the walls and ceilings Unseen until they open it up.
It’s known as an H-Type which is a Type of New Law Tenement that started being built in 1916. Horrible design due to the steel beams or channel rails that run throughout the Bldg as a result of how it’s constructed as well as the open, often u divided cockloft space which is the space between roof and top fl ceiling. It varies in height but is filled with really old dry wood framing. Fire usually gets behind a wall into one of these voids including pipe chases and once it gets into the cockloft it turns into a big problem. We now have a cockloft nozzle to use to help extinguish fire in the cockloft but the damage done at that point is horrendous. I’ve been saying for a while the city should require Bldg owners to install sprinklers in the cockloft with Pex tubing. Cheap and simple. Would save lives, property and a ton of our hard work
@@pujo28 That's mad! I often wondered why it spread so well and even went past the firefighters, it's quite frightening that that can happen. I wonder how many times this has caught FFs out. I'm surprised that more hasn't been done as you suggested, because it would save a whole lot of money long term and reduce the risk to everyone. Stay safe.
Was this duplex apartment legal? What other not legal renovations were made to this apartment ?
you would think they would train them on how to open rolling steal doors in the big city
These Fire fighters have to spend so much time to cut security doors off store fronts…there has to be another way to access these building’s.
What alternate method would you suggest?
Well, if it was easy that would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it? Maybe you could show them how to do it?
The only much faster way I can think of offhand is explosives...And that ain't gonna happen.
KRAS boxes would be the best option, but would be difficult to do with the amount of store fronts there are in the city.
@@rj4590 exactly, get the ordinance battalion with the C4. Let's just demo the entire building.
So they where there over an hour and couldn't control a small fire that in the end envelops the entire building 🤐
Look like it was burning inside the walls fire Department didn't know what was going on & they smashing windows wit no eye protection like that
Question how do they know which hose goes to which firetruck?
Each truck has a different ,color of water. The hoses are matched to the color of the water.
Can someone explain how Rescue Battalion is dispatched? Is the RB sent to every incident where a rescue unit is dispatched? How does one RB cover all five boroughs?
RB01 is assigned to tech rescue and water rescue matrixes and fires that are 2nd alarm or greater. He responds from roosevelt island (AKA SOC Island) and responds to incidents citywide.

the firefighters are well trained in america. but the stuff like slow and much large fire cars that move slowly and cannot be on site in time. if a fire hose has to be connected, a firefighter has to take 10 minutes to go from fire hydrant to fire truck and extinguish the fire from there. The fire brigade must be on site within 6 minutes. because the cars are too big and slow it takes more than 15 minutes to get there. and then they have to connect all that stuff. american fire brigade should take example of the dutch fire brigade cars and their techniques.
i dont think is the same fire reported today with 20 casualties
'cheap' lithium batteries from China without the proper protection circuitry.
🧐
the firefighters were there before it spread?? wtf were they doing?
I have never seen so many fire engines attend one call out, is that really necessary????
So if you were trapped on the 6th floor would you be asking the same question? You should be thanking these brave people who risk their lives to save people they don’t even know. It’s a large apartment building and they don’t know what their facing until they get there. Shame on you for your terrible comment.
@@doreenblatz2440 you think my comment is terrible, I think not. Am well aware that a lot of fire engines have to attend but we're all the fire crew from each engine actually in that building. Here in the UK we had the Grenfell Tower tragedy and there were 200 fire firefighters from 40 engines and the tower block had 24 floors. The fire and smoke spread just as quickly as it did from the Bronx fire, but unfortunately a lot more people died. Maybe the UK don't have the same resources as the US but they all do the same magnificent job, especially in some cases they are putting their own lives at risk....I should know I was married to a firefighter.
@@TheGyna1 they are not all in the building at once. Some are there to relieve the firefighters inside when they become exhausted. If you are a firefighters wife you should know that. After the recent fire in the Bronx where 19 people died, I’m sure they were on high alert. If your British why do you care how many firefighters New York has? I watched the Genfell Tower fire and they could have used way more firefighters, I’m sure they did the best with what they had but more lives would have been saved if they had the firefighters to save those people. Since neither you nor I are firefighters, let’s leave it up to those who fight the fires and save lives. I’m not American, I’m Canadian and there are just as many firefighters show up here too. I’ve lived through a house fire and every time I see fire trucks passing I thank God for people like these brave men and woman who do this job.

Different fire.
Pardon my ignorance, and these are literally the pros, but was breaking open ALL those windows required to…confirm/locate individuals in potential distress as there was no other way to access & to gain access to the sources(s) of the fire(s) in order to get water on it? Just seems like methodically and completely busting open ALL those windows would add a LOT of oxygen to the fire(s), presumably accelerating the spread and severity significantly, no? Or yes, BUT, was required for xyz reason(s)? Also, do all apartments have access to their own fire escape? Presumably yes but, residents unable to reach them due to fire/smoke? I had no idea this had been raging for so long. Heard 31 injuries but no deaths, thankfully. Side note: loved seeing the shot of their command center area with the huge whiteboard and multiple tablets keeping track of everything.
The windows probably would have broken up either way. The heat of a large fire is enough to shatter glass. The glass doesn’t even need to be in the fire, it just needs to be in contact with the heat to shatter everywhere and cause a bleed if someone’s there.
That’s the only reason I for sure know of why it’s a good idea to break the glass.
Well that and putting water on the fire via lift is easier than climbing six floors to put water on the fire that way.
I’m sure there are other reasons too
@@rinmedrano8869 thanks Rin. I guess better to bust the glass in a controlled manner than for the fire/heat to potentially break it at an in opportune time. The fire/heat itself did seem (to me) to be at a state where it would have busted out all those windows at all though.
To answer your first question, no it’s not required, and yes breaking all of these windows in the way they were doing it does cause fire spread especially when you have yet to locate the seat of the fire. There is a method to ventilating a room on fire. You especially shouldn’t break windows from the outside of the building, because that truly does cause fire spread and it can cause a deadly situation for the firefighters trying to locate the fire. What you just watched is how firefighters can spread a fire trying to fight a fire.
Damn. They let that little roll up door whoop their ass

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted".
Matthew 23 NIV
YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IMAGE in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.
AND WHEN YOU PRAY DO NOT BE LIKE THE HYPOCRITES, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. BUT WHEN YOU PRAY GO INTO YOUR ROOM, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
This, then, is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
