Solid video John. First of, I really dig your jersey. Have to agree with the early Cure. Seventeen Seconds was a brilliant record. I saw The Cult during their 'Love Tour' and The Cure on their 'Faith Tour'. If they both toured together at the time they could have billed it as the 'Faith & Love Tour. {smile} Wonderful and gothie John. Enjoyed it very much~

Hi Rob, the shirt I am wearing in this video was made by my daughter. She got a 'tie dye' kit for Christmas. Up till now it has been too cold to wear it, but now the sun is shining so I had no excuse not to put it on. 'Faith & Love Tour'. That would have been cool. Just imagine how the merchandise would have looked. That is one gig T-shirt I'd love to have. Cheers

I think the cure are sometimes goth sometimes not but when they are they are perhaps the most melancholy of goth bands

This video complements Vinyl Richie's Goth overview nicely. When I first started working there were a couple of Goth workmates so I went along with them to some shows, Sisters of Mercy and Inca Babies I remember in particular. Was never into Goth much but definitely those on the fringes who you showed - I still love Echo and the Bunnymen! Take care, John.

Thanks. Goth was never my thing either really. It was a cul de sac in the evolution of rock music IMO. I have always though of Echo and the Bunnymen as being a Goth band but whilst checking up, it couldn't find any reference that suggested they were. New Model Army were another band that apparently were not Goth either.

Was it a purposeful irony to do a video on Goth while wearing the loudest, brightest T-shirt you've ever worn in a video?

Nice video John. I think I've mentioned before that Goth Rock never really chimed with me, though I'm capable of enjoying its slightly poppier offshoots. My claim to fame is that I was once in a band with a guy who was then sharing a house with Wayne Hussey. I didn't know that at the time, even when I went round to his house to pick him up for band practice etc. Do you remember that Dean Everest was really into All About Eve? I had a brief fling with a girl who really liked them and would play their tapes in bed. I didn't really like them. They were probably a bit distracting.

No, Goth was never my thing either but it was big at the time (mid to late 80s). At art college on my foundation course, half the students were Goths. I would have been a social outcast if I hadn't have able to reference David Bowie, Hendrix and Mark Bolan as my musical interests. Bowie obviously carried weight, Hendrix was obscure enough to the other 17 year-olds to be impressive and Mark Bolan was held in high regard just for being Mark Bolan. No I didn't know Dean Everest was a fan of All About Eve. Shame we don't hear from him these days. I always looked forward to his updates. RE your fling with AAE girl, I used to know a girl that would send me Goth mixed tapes in the post. She sent loads to me. I really should listen to them again, there are most probably all sorts of gothic gems on them.

When you get time, be sure to Google 'The Mission Deliverance (Sorcerer's Mix)'. It's uses audio samples from the 1981 Excalibur film. One of the best tracks to come out of Goth IMHO. Oh, by the way, did you get the reference of the thumbnail to this video?

@@johnbellamy3406 This girl I knew was no Goth. Her tape collection also included Phi Collins, Invisible Touch and Tango in the Night. All About Eve definitely managed to cross over somehow.

Seventeen Seconds is my favorite Cure album. I need to get Dreamtime. What a great band. I have that Mission album but it is not a gatefold. I've never heard of The Nephilm. Enjoyed the video.

I was 16 when I got into the alternative and indie scene, since I was kind of an outsider but not a loner, age 17 was when I got more into goth after seeing the banshees, the creatures and the cure on top of the pops reruns, I'm still waiting for my vinyl copy of disintegration from Germany, been waiting for over two months

Thanks for making a response! Some great choices! The Mission is a good choice. I don't have anything by them, though I know I should. I had totally forgotten about Fields of the Nephilim. Great choice!! I don't have anything by them either. All About Eve is a good choice. Another I don't have.. Reminds me a bit of Cocteau Twins, who were also big with the goth contingent.. I've hear of Balaam and the Angel, but don't know if I've ever actually heard their music. Thanks for giving me some new things to explore!

I'm glad you enjoyed my video. It was fun to pull out these records and remember them from my youth. I had always thought of Goth as being a purely UK movement, but I was totally wrong. One of my beast friends who was a goth had naturally platinum white hair and very pale skin. One day he came to school with bright purple hair. He apparently tried to dye it black, but the dye colour just wasn't dense enough for the lightness of his hair. Poor guy, he never really lived it down, no matter how dark and brooding to tired to be.

John, I really enjoyed this. When it comes to Goth I think UK and of course places like The Bat Cave. You really had a lot of great goth albums. Do you have any pictures of you dressed in goth lol. Enjoyed the needle drops. Very informative as always

Thanks Steve. No, no photos, just the blackening of my soul from the nihilism and sadness played a 33.3 rpm. Ohhh that was dark. :-) Thanks
