If you think 61 years to statehood is bad, Guam entered the US at about the same time, was run like a naval base until the Japanese occupation, and still isn't a state.
Try 125 and counting --Puerto Rico was also annexed in 1898 and is still nowhere close to becoming a state despite having a GDP greater than 11 states and a population greater than 20 (which, by the way, is 98.9% "Hispanic or Latino").

@@coryandrum nonbinding vote. 54% voted to become a US state. 55% turnout. There have been 3 referendums in the last 12 years. Congress needs to allow a binding referendum for once. Then, only then, a lot more people will show up at the polls.

You neglected to mention that the President of Hawaii, Sanford B. Dole and his party were explicitly petitioning to be annexed by the US since they took over. The cause for annexation you mention was just the US taking its time to sign off on it.
Sanford B. Dole’s cousin was James Drummond Dole who later would go on to found the Hawaiian Pineapple Company which would later merge with Castle & Cooke, Inc. which was one of the major sugar businesses that emerged after the overthrow of the monarchy and had previously acquired Standard Fruit & Steamship Company which was known for meddling in the government of Honduras. This merger created the modern Dole company of today.
Might want to mention who put Dole in power, too ...

4:58 So for those who don't know, the French guy's demands are in reference to the French invasion of Honolulu of 1849 aka the Tromelin Affair. In the Treaty of 1843 with Hawaii, France had agreed never on any pretense to take possession of any portion of the Hawaiian domain. The French government told their new Honolulu consul in 1848 to be on their best behavior, but Guillaume Patrice Dillon who led the consul was like "Hehe NO". So on August 12, admiral Tromelin arrived and found out about tariffs and Catholic persecution. Angered by American protestant missionaries, he worked with Dillon to make a list of ten demands for King Kamehameha III on August 22.
Butttt the demands were not met by the 25th, so 140 French marines landed and sacked government buildings and general property in the city, causing 100K USD in damages (nearly four million in today's money). They also took the king's yacht, said "THANKS FOR THE FREE PARTY BOAT!" and sailed it to Tahiti. At first, the French government condemned what happened, but reconsidered it as more justified and did not make any reparations.

"Hawaii is the biggest island in Hawaii" is reminiscent of the equally-confusing fact that in my home of Canada, Québec is the capital of Québec. In common speech, Québec City (or Ville de Québec in French) is the name, but legally it is just Québec. The same is true of New York, New York but that's decently well-known (and NYC is not the capital city of the State of New York).
The best case of this is San Marino. It's a microstate completely inside Italy, but still independent. Like other microstates, its capital city has the same name as the country. Despite its size, it has several municipalities. If you're in the City of San Marino, you're also in the municipality of San Marino, in the country of San Marino.
If you’re curious as to the actual reason why the entire country took the name, it was because the king who would eventually unite the whole island chain (Kamehameha) was from the island of Hawaiʻi, and simply brought the other islands under his already established rule. Had the ruler who united Hawaiʻi been from one of the other islands, the country and island chain could very easily have been called Maui or Oʻahu.

We got several of those in Argentina. Córdoba (city) is the capital of Córdoba (province), and the same goes for Mendoza, Formosa, Santa Fe, San Luis, Corrientes, Tucumán, Neuquén... I'd say roughly half of our provinces.
This actually makes sense. What doesn't is the USA capital, the city of Washington, which is nowhere close to the Washington state. And which also officially isn't in any state and isn't a state itself, and it actually has a different name, District of Columbia, to show that it's a federal district and not actually a state. It's really confusing because there's also a country names Colombia but they're not directly linked. So the city is abbreviated as Washington DC.

While a glottal stop is a stop it’s not really “nothing” either. Like “uh-oh” is different than if you said “uhoh”. It is a consonant in its own right.
There's a little more to the Hawaiian flag story than that: A Red Ensign with the Union Jack was given to Kamehameha I by Captain George Vancouver in 1793, who previously visited with Captain Cook in 1778-1779. However, Ireland wasn't part of the UK until 1801, so this specific ensign didn't become the current Hawaiian flag. So what did? Well, Scottish captain Alexander Adams of the British East India Company! The current flag was created by him as part of a China trip in 1817. At this time, he was part of Hawaiian Kingdom Navy. On his way to China, while stopping on Kaua'i for supplies, he gave Kaumualiʻi (last supreme ruler of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau) an ensign to raise at the port, as Kaumuali'i only had the Russian flag left behind from a failed Russian colony.
Yeah, there was a Russian colony attempt. Basically, a German physician approached Kamehameha I to help fight the rebellious Kamuali'i, Kamehameha said no, they sailed to Kaua'i, Kaumuali'i was more than willing to become a Russian protectorate, the German promised him that Tsar Alexander would liberate Kaua'i and conquer the Hawaiian archipelago from Kamehameha, they built three forts, but turns out the Tsar never backed this German...so he was forced to leave in fall 1817.

Depends on who you talk to. If they're speaking in Pidgin then you'll here the V. But generally I've heard most Hawaiians pronounce the W.

Two quick notes:
1. "Hawaiian" refers only to ethnic Hawaiians. A citizen of Hawaii irrespective of ancestry is simply called an "Islander."
2. Despite the annexation, Hawaii still feels admirably distinct from the rest of the US, moreso even than other "foreign-ish" states like CA, TX, NM, or LA. To this day politicians take their official photos wearing leis, and it's expected to know _at least_ some Hawaiian words and phrases.
For the benefit of international viewers (like me) please spell out the names of the US states mentioned in your comment.

I think another point worth mentioning is that Hawaii is the only US state where “white” is not the plurality ethnicity. Asian/Pacific Islander is the largest ethnic group, and they were the state to elect the first Asian Senator
The glottal stop isn't just a pause button. It is a specific consonant sound, and the symbol for it is a letter in Hawaiian.
The pause button is already the anglicized version of the word. I've never in my life heard someone say "Huh-why." The final i still makes a sound in English.
Most Americans say /həˈwaɪi/ and most Hawaiians say /həˈvɐjʔi/. There is no /həˈwaɪ/

At least from what I’ve learned, the Hawaiians were seen as much more civilized to the American government and public precisely because they rolled over to influence, and the reason Americans decided to annex was an inherent distrust of the queen believing she would push for less American influence on the islands, something that would be devastating to sugar farmers and military advances. TL;DR, it wasn’t all race, America was only explicitly motivated by race everywhere else (except maybe Alaska but even there the Inuit could be argued)

The cycle of conquest outside of European colonisation is fairly different though, in that most conquers annex land to actually incorporate it and its people as a part of their civilisation. Colonialism specifically made conquered people a resource to exploit, as was their land, which leads to a very different dynamic. If civilisations are wolf packs in normal cases the losing wolves will be incorporated into the new pack or chased off, but under colonialism they're kept as spare meat and breeding stock.

In reality, the aboriginal native Hawaiians did not fully understand the concept of land ownership (because they instead viewed land as something that could be owned and instead as something that must be cared for) and they ended up selling their land for well below value to foreigners who took advantage of the Native Hawaiians

The US annexation of Hawai`i was illegal. No argument. But in reality does anyone think the alternatives were going to be better?
What if Imperial Japan annexed the unprotected islands? Does anyone think they would have treated the native occupants fairly and with respect?
How about Imperial Russia or the USSR after their revolution? How would that have gone?
China didn't have a significant foreign policy until after the 1940s so they weren't an option.
While the annexation was BS, the long-term outcome probably preserved more of original culture than any other colonial invader.
Not necessarily, though the US coup & annexation is certainly not the worst case scenario.
Japan almost certainly would have invaded, but then they'd be freed after WW2 like most of their other island holdings.
Russia couldn't have done anything, they're the first world power to be defeated by a non-european country (Japan).
The USSR might have tried interfering, but NATO would have interfered too and so it'd be similar to any other communism vs capitalism battleground. Probably ending up western aligned but independent after the USSR collapsed.
China is certainly an option now, but they've only really been a threat for the last 20 years or so. That's an extra 100-150 years where Hawaii could have aligned themselves with the west, just like all the other small pacific islands.
If france/UK hadn't done anything by the time the US interfered, they would never have.
Other pacific island countries have remained independent. If the US hadn't staged a coup and annexed it, it's likely it would have remained independent - barring any temporary WW2 occupation.
Hawaii seems to have about as much culture as the natives in NZ. Which is to say, a reasonable amount considering being conquered, certainly better than Australia/Canada/mainland US, but still a far cry off what they used to have.

Hawaii is out in the middle of the Pacific and in the days before international air travel, is the size and location for a large military presence.
Monday morning quarterbacking is always easier but considering the era, taking possession -- legally or not -- was still the basic method of international foreign policy.
Given the attempt to systematically eradicate the Hawaiian language and culture and institute a racial hierarchy immediately following the US occupation, the country’s transformation into a plantation economy (which has served no purpose other than to enrich the descendants of missionaries and destroy the natural environment beyond repair), and the military presence which has likewise polluted the environment and dragged Hawaiʻi kicking and screaming into every imperialist spat the United States starts, there is absolutely nothing “pragmatic” about tolerating colonial rule in any form. Would Imperial Japanese occupation have been worse? Possibly, but this is not an excuse for apologia for the current state of affairs. If British, Russian, or whatever other colonial occupation was hypothetically even worse than Imperial Japan, would that then justify its rule? Absolutely not, all imperialism and colonialism is to be opposed, and to hypothesize about which hypothetical power is worse serves no other purpose than to run interference for the one currently occupying the country.

What is a German Austrian?
Guttural stops aren't used as much in Austro-Bavarian as they are in German. In Bavarian they are used in a similar fashion to how they are used in English, i.e. not between every word.

The whole "colonialism bad" perspective of Hawaiian history is a half truth.
Most people are satisfied with this perspective however, and everyone tends is gloss over the "monarchies also bad" perspective.
Another major factor in the Hawaiian kingdom's downfall is the Hawaiian class system. The Ali'i view their people as property that they had rights to and, as a result, sold the Hawaiian people out to the foreigners for their own benefit.

yes, I am just as offended by that fact. But shouldn't that logic also work in reverse? If you are offended that the Hawaiian government was overthrown in such a way, should you not also be offended by a thumbnail that, in a political climate characterised by so much racial tension, will clearly come off as race-baiting to many people? Judging by your doubling-down on it in this comment, I can only conclude that your choice of thumbnail was very conscious and intentional.
If you want to acknowledge the fact that yes, the annexation of Hawaii was in part justified with racist rhetoric, couldn't you just mention that in your video and maybe give an example? By doing so, you could show in what way this historical event is relevant to current politics. Your thumbnail, instead, succeeds in three things: pander to leftists, provoke racists, and deeply disappoint people who, after reading what your thumbnail says, might have expected and been interested in a video actually explaining the racial angle behind the annexation of Hawaii, supplying it with context, and pointing out how it might be politically relevant today. What could have been "good clickbait" is reduced to a snide remark about race; not only bad clickbait, but bad in a needlessly inflammatory way.
It also puzzles me that your Austrian version of this video has "Amis" instead of "white guys". You must know that the two don't quite translate to each other. Did you aim for your German-speaking audience to take this video in a completely different way?
I have always really liked your content, so I am very sad that in the future I might not anymore, if you are willing to use such unconstructive methods to push politics. I wonder how things would have turned out if they didn't come under our umbrella, wonder if they would have taken up communism like some other parts of southeast asia, or how ww2 would have gone.
I can't help feeling that hawaii was better off getting stolen by the US, as in I bet the people there wouldn't be in as good living conditions. Not that I think that negates the crime, but at least they're in a pretty good spot now overall, at least compared to other groups that got everything stolen (and worse) like the native americans.
The part of modern hawaii that's pushing for independence is so misguided imo. Seems like it'd be better to let the past go, life's hard enough without the chains of historic wrongs weighing you down, but I can't understand what it'd be like so idk.

The people who wish for independents wish for it for similar reasons as America did in the past.
They don't feel American and they don't want people from outside deciding things for them.
It isn't a surprise that some of them don't feel American, most of their shared history with America is being bullied by America, and they are far away from America, physically and culturally.
It is not about changing the past, it is about changing the present and future of Hawaii
@@E_D___ But just about everyone alive there today was born after it became a state, they have to look at the past to have the perspective you describe, except for the being far away part.
But even without considering that, I can't see a net gain from splitting. US citizenship is such a valuable thing for future prospects and travel, even without considering the other services the federal gov't provides. Yea they wouldn't have to deal with federal bs, but they'd still inevitably be influenced by america just b/c of their location.
The more I think about it, the more hawaii independence sounds like Brexit (which we still haven't seen the full negative repercussions of yet imo, and some were hidden by covid).
Beings basically guaranteed Japaan would have take it over. They had like twenty% was Japanese population and in addition japan went all in with imperalism. And japan death cult mentality of the time, Hawaii would have been much worse off.
