DEWM 64 has sadly been trapped in the pages of gaming history until now. I look forward to getting a chance to play an official port of the game on my Switch. Make yourself heard: did you play this game back when it first came out? Or are you only now discovering it for the first time?
Nope. I didn't buy it at the time since my older brothers advised me to get Turok instead. No regrets there. But I discovered Doom 64 via a custom wad, using GZdoom. And it rocks. Especially the ambiance. The official port will surely be different though, especially the controls
I played it when it came out. I remember that critics ripped both Doom 64 and Raven Software’s Hexen apart for using sprite-based graphics, for being “dated” and “old.” Ironically, I think the sprites were so beautifully drawn in Doom 64 and have aged a lot better than the early-3D low-poly look of its competitors, like Turok and Quake. In any event, gameplay has always been more important to me than the technical aspects of the graphics. It is a shame though, I think Doom 64 just came out at the wrong time ... it was far too late to ride on the success of Doom, but far too early to capitalize on the resurgence of retro-gaming and nostalgia for sprite based games.
The name certainly didn't help things. "DOOM 64" makes it sound like it's just a port of the original DOOM to the Nintendo 64. I had no idea it was an original game until MANY years later.
The most underrated Doom video game ever. I'm preparing myself playing every other doom, but since I don't have a N64 and the cartridge lying around, I'm gonna wait to experience D64 right before or in between D:E.
Doom 64 will always have a special place in my heart. Not only is it one of the first N64 games I bought once I got hold of my uncle's old video game consoles, but it's also the first Doom game I ever played, and that was the one that got me into the series. Just the other day, I played through the game on the old N64 console (still works after 20+ years) in anticipation for the release of Doom Eternal, and I recently learned that the re release will have new exclusive levels set after the main campaign. I really can't wait for this to finally come out tonight/tomorrow.
If i had to guess I think it might have something to do with it being a pre-order bonus. They don't want people to pre-order, get Doom 64 for free, play through it, and then cancel and refund their pre-order.
I gave up for a bit when dropping down a clute into the outside and finding too many spiders killing me while I look for a way back into the building. Need to throw a grenade at the shits.
Always loved Doom 64, and I could never understand when it was released why people just dismissed it simply because it wasn't 3d. The atmosphere, greatly enhanced by the eerie soundscapes was, to me, so much better than the blocky, 'jumpy' enemy mechanics in Quake, or the over use of fog and simple 3d in Turok. People were so drawn to 3d games regardless of quality they overlooked 2d for a generation... regardless of quality
Actually it wasn't because it was 3D that it was dismissed, it was because it WASN'T 3D, as in it still used sprites instead of fully rendered graphics. Reviewers lambasted it for this at the time, for being "dated", yet nowadays its high quality sprite work and moody lighting have aged amazingly well, while the blocky early 3D titles with their muddy textures have not at all.
Abazigal so true. It's funny how.the tables have turned. These types of games are just artistically pleasing even after all the years. But all those early 3D games look absolutely terrible.
Loved Doom 64 when I was a kid. I've recently been playing Doom 64 retribution which is a great conversion. Mostly because it adds the shotgun and supershotgun reload animations
I just love this game. Played it for hours on my good old N64. I loved the darker athmosfere and soundtrack if you compare it with doom 1 and 2. There was just 1 thing I missed in Doom 64: reload animations!
My first taste of Doom was on the Sega 32X, which I played to death lol. Then I saw a demo of Doom 64 in front of a KB Toy Store and was immediately blown away from the looks of it. My mom ended up buying it for me for 20 bucks at a closeout store. Took the game home and became obsessed with playing every level and finding every secret. Then played it on my pc with Doom64 EX. Now I just bought it for my Switch and for my PS4. Yeah, I’m definitely a huge fan of this classic Doom game. One of my all time favorite games. I can’t get enough of the map designs, the eerie creepy music and the addictive combat. God I love it !!!
I honestly always found the animated monster sprites scarier and just overall more appealing than early 3d games. Pinky from doom 64 is scarier than any quake beast
I remember playing Doom 64 for the first time through totally legal means and not on Project 64, expecting it would simply be a port, but I was pleasantly surprised
I still have my original N64 cartridge, but have actually been replaying this on the Xbox One (more than Doom Eternal in fact). The ability to now play with twin sticks rather than the N64's stick/c buttons makes it a joy to play. Really enjoying it
Picked this up the other night on the PS4 and played the first few levels. Really cool game, love the atmosphere. I've never been a big Doom player, grew up with consoles back then. Definitely a gem from the N64 era.
he out alone tomorrow on the Xbox store, psn and eShop for 4.99£ (€ or $). i can't wait for buy on new-zealand store. i want to (re)play this game again. (Absolutely magnificit with legendary Doom 2 classics game 🎮😍👍).
0:40 the lighting on his pectoral muscles disturbed me as a child... It highlighted the detail of the moment as he was much more bigger and powerful than you.
I didn't pay it much attention at the time, I thought it was just another port, maybe doom 1/2 bundled together with a revamped engine or a new weapon or something. I remember I saw footage on a promotional N64 VHS tape of all things, where the shotgun had no pump animations and I just ignored it after that. But yeah, Doom wasn't the hottest property at the time. Other newer shooters were taking attention, both on the 64 and PC as well as other emerging genres. I'm really thinking about picking it up, seems like it fits in better with 2016s timeline than the real Doom 3 does. Not that thats hugely important to me for doom. But Doom 3 just seems like a black sheep in every respect. They seem to have been wowed by Half Life and stuff that came out in the intervening time between the original games and forgot what Doom was good at. Doom 3 has a protracted intro, a lot of exposition and quite slow combat. Thats not really in the spirit of Doom to me. They really leaned back the other direction in a way that works for 2016 and captures some of the essence of doom. You get a pistol moments in and swat away people trying to tell you the plot.
Back in the 90's the game was first called Final Doom 2 and later Doom Absolution, finally it was releaed as Doom 64, i still have my game magazines from that era, i was extremely hyped for this game, it went under the radar but it aged better than most of the other 3D shooters for the N64
What a pleasant surprise from my pre-order. I’ve always heard of Doom 64 but I never played it, so once I’m done with Eternal I’ll definitely be diving in.
I loved the hell (heh) out of Doom 64 back in my N64 days. It was so different, so much more geared towards tension and dread just through the atmosphere and music. "In the Void" was an awesome secret map.
As somebody who's never found the Doom games all that appealing to play, I'm loving these looks into the series' history, design choices, and such. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on D:E. Any chance for a video on some of the other content made for the series? Maybe an in-depth look at Sigil?
Man, I remember DOOM 64 when I was a kid. I couldn't play it for more than 10 minutes. It took the horror aspect of DOOM and brought it to the forefront. The ambient sounds in the hallways, the pitch black dark and the demons just scared the fuck out of me. I was young so I often got lost and was just too scared to continue. A lot of people like the smash and run DOOM which I guess the original was like that with all the music and stuff but to me DOOM is all about puzzles and horror.
I bought this when it came out. The original system and cart still work. When I get bored with GoldenEye 007, I throw this or forsaken in. Doom 64 is still fun and hard as hell.
I feel like the N64 was Nintendo's answer to the kiddy image they had with the Super NES. With N64 more westernized and darker games were released for the console like Conker's Fur Day, Doom 64, the Turok trilogy, Hybrid Heaven, Duke Nukem 64, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, Resident Evil 2, Nightmare Creatures, Vigilante 8, Mace: The Dark Age, WipEout 64, the Castlevania games, Hexen, Quake 64, StarCraft 64, Mortal Kombat 4, Killer Instinct Gold, GoldenEye 007, Majora's Mask, Perfect Dark, them South Park games, and Sin and Punishment.
I just played this game earlier (had it back on N64) boy I forgot how good this game really is.. and weird thing is even though I really like Doom eternal, I like this just as much...who else feels this way?
I had no idea about any of this! All I ever heard about Doom 64 was that it was a port of the original game, and I already had the original game on my PC so why bother, right? If I had known that it was a *new* game in the series I would have happily looked into it, even if I had heard any negative comments about the game (which I largely didn't). I was told exactly two things, that it was a *port*, and that "personally, I don't like the new look." Seems I was seriously mislead.
Great narration, editing and writing. Good job guys. This game rules. Only thing I can say, though, is this could really do with some background music or game sound. It sounds a bit empty.
I remember renting DOOM64 at a local video store only not to play it cause it was so damn dark and since I was a kid I didn’t know I had to configure the settings haha, now I’m an adult and I’m excited to play it once again 🤓
I didn't miss out on the original release. Just - a FPS on a console and myself were never compatible. Hopefully, we can get Goldeneye on the PC and I can enjoy that. It was always difficult to play back in the day. Such slow down during 4 way split screen multiplayer.
It's worth mentioning that a lot of people didn't realize it wasn't just another port of Doom and Doom II on the N64. The original title would have helped with that, but just calling it Doom 64 probably hurt sales of the title a lot more than people today realize.
Doom 64 is the best old school Doom, and the best game on that console. Yes I'm including SM64. I've played through every source port multiple times, and can't wait to finally play it officially and with new content. I'm almost as excited for the new levels in D64 as I am for Eternal.
Love Doom 64, it's funny how it was classed as dated on release due to games like Goldeneye and Turok yet has held up far better than both of these games when played today.
Who is the only artist to work on DOOM 1,2, and 64 ???? That would be me!!! Glad people are still enjoying DOOM 64! Funny enough, I have never played it....I Might need to change that.
I have the original Doom 64, Doom 64 EX, Brutal Doom 64 and now Doom 64 2020. All of which are still good regardless (unless you prefer gore to which Brutal Doom 64 would be recommended)
The bonus levels in Doom 64 Remaster is the the levels that were going to be Doom 2 64 that was cancelled/probably scrapped. Yep not so interesting unless something like a new enemy or maybe the full game of Doom 2 64 but nope because I already know Bethesda.
I missed out on Doom 64 the first go around because I thought it was just a port of the original doom, or maybe a collection of Doom 1 and 2 ports. I had no idea that it was actually its own entry, and I actually prefer CreepyDoom (I am one of the few people I know who legitimately loved Doom 3).
ill definitely give it a shot.... also the original doom/doom 2 footage in the video looks weird as if the textures have been compressed from the original ones, it just looks wrong
Tommy, I'd love if you would stream your playthrough of Dewm Eternal so we can watch your raw reactions as you come across things that happen. Don't wanna take away from your possible enjoyment though, so think of it what you may
Opinions on DOOM ETERNAL thus far? It's like playing speed chess while pumped up on cocaine and meth and turns take 5 seconds if you're really taking your time. 4 levels in and I need to take a break to stop the errant twitch I now have in my hands. It's pretty damn solid so far.
Doom 64 EX was developed by Samuel Villarreal, head developer of the Kex projects. It's safe to say EX is an older build of the 2020 official release just minus all the Bethesda dot net crap.
I don't get all of these people saying Doom64 was poorly received. I knew several people that loved it at the time and the reviews I read were fairly positive. It was definitely sort of dated compared to Quake 64 or Turok but I think it has aged better than either of those. I love the soundtrack. It is very similar to the Playstation version that came out before it. The soundtrack of both by Aubrey Hodges really gives both of them an unsettling feeling and atmosphere.
I love this game, the only thing I did not like is that many levels are very dark. That was the reason why I didn't buy the game and only rented it when it was released. A multiplayer would have been incredible.
Always wanted to play this! Used to see it in the video shop, but never owned an N64. And for £4!? Ye cannie complain Also, It's got Aubrey Hodges Amazing soundtrack like the PS1 Versions 👍
Why they did not used the oportunity to include in the remaster more weapon animations? The super shotgun without it's reload animation is super weird.
I think one of the reasons 64 was overlooked for so long is because of the dumb naming convention for N64 games. It made me think it was a port of Doom I with the "64" moniker attached.
DEWM 64 has sadly been trapped in the pages of gaming history until now. I look forward to getting a chance to play an official port of the game on my Switch. Make yourself heard: did you play this game back when it first came out? Or are you only now discovering it for the first time?

Doom 64 is great. I was excited when it was a pre-order bonus with eternal!
The bonus levels in Doom 64 Remaster is the the levels that were going to be Doom 2 64 that was cancelled/probably scrapped.
Yep not so interesting unless something like a new enemy or maybe the full game of Doom 2 64 but nope because I already know Bethesda.
Doom on Atari Jaguar was awesome!
Doom 64 was my dad's favorite game, but I was too scared to play it by myself.
ill definitely give it a shot....
also the original doom/doom 2 footage in the video looks weird as if the textures have been compressed from the original ones, it just looks wrong
I suddenly want to see Peter Capaldi play Doom 64
Tommy, I'd love if you would stream your playthrough of Dewm Eternal so we can watch your raw reactions as you come across things that happen.
Don't wanna take away from your possible enjoyment though, so think of it what you may
Sorely tempted...
I would love to see what kind of mods come out for this updated version.
Good video, definitely agree that Doom 64 is an underrated entry.
But texture filtering? I can't forgive that.
I loved doom64,it’s my fave old school doom
Who else remembers the cat and mouse level.
Me. I was 14 years at the time. Scary shit back then 😂
In it's originally released form, I'm not talking ports, mods or updates, Doom 64 is the best of the 2.5D Doom games.
Change my mind.
I love Dewm :)
Doom 64 EX was developed by Samuel Villarreal, head developer of the Kex projects. It's safe to say EX is an older build of the 2020 official release just minus all the Bethesda dot net crap.
Should have come with split screen. Would’ve been nice with coop
Great vid wow
I love this game, the only thing I did not like is that many levels are very dark. That was the reason why I didn't buy the game and only rented it when it was released. A multiplayer would have been incredible.
In the remaster you can ser everything.
People will now atleast know or remember Midway studios. ....one of the very older game studios who were in the business
Always wanted to play this! Used to see it in the video shop, but never owned an N64. And for £4!? Ye cannie complain Also, It's got Aubrey Hodges Amazing soundtrack like the PS1 Versions 👍
Terrific game
Why they did not used the oportunity to include in the remaster more weapon animations? The super shotgun without it's reload animation is super weird.
I think one of the reasons 64 was overlooked for so long is because of the dumb naming convention for N64 games. It made me think it was a port of Doom I with the "64" moniker attached.
Fun fact: doom64 ex was made by one of the dudes at nightdive
