Something that's upset me in recent gaming trends is the biggening of maps while not considering the details and eschewing more tight-knit small interactions and areas for larger map sizes. Rockstar has thankfully stayed faithful to making their worlds feel alive and decorated densely, at least with RDR2. Graphics can only take a world so far, it won't feel real unless the designers treat it like it is.
This is something that will only become worse as time goes on due to the realistic graphics ever improving. Back when San Andreas came out, nobody was really complaining about graphics. It was easy to create more areas without having overly detailed and logical architecture.
The "Casino" isn't what you think it is. This location in the game is based on a part of the Asbury Park, NJ boardwalk, which I live near by. If you google images of it, you can see that it's an almost exact replica as it was when the game was made. The "Casino" building was built about 100 years ago and was never for gambling, but for the old definition of Casino, which was a house of games and amusements. It used to have a carousel and skating rink inside.
For a game made in 2008, it actually blows my mind how good it still looks. And I'd argue its level of detail might still be unmatched. Every single building in GTA4 has such detail, I mean what other game has such intricate and architecturally accurate masonry on every single building!
You missed a great spot at the abandoned Sprunk factory. When I was a kid I used to go to the tunnel next to it because I was sure that there were ghosts or other stuff like that (like Big Foot in SA, or aliens in a tunnel from the desert area) and I was so scared of that area... Also I liked to follow the abandoned old train line that used to go through the area. Man... These memories... Me being 11 years old in 2011.. Playing GTA 4 on my PS3 on a CRT TV in my room at night... Loved it
Fun fact: The doors used at the Auto Eroticar place (the ones that are on backwards) are actually reused doors from the cut 24/7 interior. This is why they have cigarette ads, the atm, the 'WEEKLY UPDATE' and such on it. The textures for the door are called 24_7_signs1 and 24_7_win1.
I'm one of the leading GTA IV beta hunters on gtaf and I didn't even know this wow. That's cool. Did know that one 24/7 still has interior stairs collision and how LODs show that Schottler grocery store had interior though
What fascinated me the most about Liberty City was the ladders outside most buildings leading to roof. I i would spend hours exploring different buildings , finding any hidden interior and attempt parkour between roofs Peter Parker style. It really captured the urban environment so well and feels much alive and denser than Los Santos. I hope in GTA VI we have similar incredible detailed building in Vice City but with more interiors.
4:00 I am pretty sure this Mansion is featured on the in game TV show, CNT's "I'm Rich". Its the Mansion of the Von Crastenburgs, an extremely wealthy family where their riches is coming from illegal diamond mines outside of the US The mansion itself is said to be "Tax Exempt because the Von Crastenburgs _practiced their religion_ inside the mansion" and the inside is made out of carved ivory. The place also said to boasts 45 Bedrooms, a Bathroom with chandeliers and "transparent plumbing".
Lack of purchasable properties in GTA 4 will likely be for two reasons: 1) Due to hardware constraints they had to cut down some content. 2) For story reasons. Niko is an illegal immigrant with ties to organized crime. During the time period that the game's story take place, Liberty City is experiencing a recession and so if news comes out that there is guy purchasing properties while rest of the people are struggling to make ends meet, it will raise a lot of suspicion. Since Rockstar was aiming for realism they opted not to include this feature. I am leaning on to reason 2 as we can already see from GTA5 that was released on the same hardware and still had purchasable properties in game.
I also don't see Niko as the kind of guy to blow all his money on expensive shit like cars and houses, so it wouldn't be very fitting for him. Same goes for Johnny and Luis, just don't see them as those kind of guys.
@@MrFusionI remember a conversation Niko had with Little Jacob, saying that Roman doesn't like cars and weapons like they do, so Niko does like expensive shit.... at least expensive cars, he likes.

All of these seemingly useless places really made GTA IV alive for me. In GTA V it seems like everything has a specific purpose, or just doesn’t exist otherwise. I came back to play IV quite a few times over the years, pretending I was “visiting Liberty City” for a bit just to hang out for a week or so, and I probably still will for a long time.
Places that the base game never used were reserved for the DLC. The problem with the base game is that it never updated any assets to accommodate for any changes that the DLCs did (and neither did Lost & Damned for the Ballad of Gay Tony, because Lost & Damned released first).
I actually feel it's the exact opposite. Including the DLCs, the entire map feels extremely well used and nearly every small chunk is used in a mission in some capacity. 5 just feels big and empty, especially outside of Los Santos. GTA Online does help, but it's just not the same.
That money you were talking about at 8:26 in Auto Eroticar are from the mission Payback given by Jimmy Pegorino. When you kill the guys you are meant to kill for some reason money won't despawn before you collect them even after you reload a save. The sprunk factory is I believe from Phil Bell's mission Trespass. The glass at the 11:15 to the right is actually breakable. You chase the guy you were after in that mission through it and then continue the chase through the rooftops to eventually have a boss hellicopter battle.
8:26 I have a random theory that the money was used as a placeholder for various vehicle purchase points, then got repurposed for Payback, and devs forgot to despawn it outside of the mission. GTA5's vehicle stat menu that appears standing near vehicles in garages and the way you buy cars at GTAO's LS Car Meet were probably ideas that have been bouncing around since GTASA.
My absokute fav are all the abandoned and partially deconstructed railways. They mostly make sense and you can always imagine where the rail lines are supposed to have run. There are lots of Wiki entries on this, too.
GTA IV always felt so full yet so empty. I really appreciate all the detail in the city, but it being only city, with no retreat, really hurts it. My favourite spot to go when I no longer wanted to roam the busy streets was that destroyed hospital on the little island. The one where you do the mission in which you have a shootout with NOOSE. The lack of other features was also disappointing. Most vehicle customization available was pay n' spray. Clothing choice was also pretty basic. You'd do the missions, then play around with the physics for a while, and then just get bored and quit. And I do agree on it's style. The game looks really pretty. I believe it is set in autumn. That's why it has such a cold appearance, and why the city workers keep raking leaves on the ground.
I'd take the denser city feeling of the game(plus weightier cars) than finding myself essentially driving in the bottom if los stantos for 5 minutes, only to inevitable take the highway to blaine county. Not sure if my gripe made sense

Tbh, video game graphics have not been improving at a rate that really justifies revamping everything from the ground up. If they ever remaster RDR 1, I would be totally fine with them using RDR 2's map assets, graphics, etc. And that's a game from 6 years ago. Likewise is if GTA 7, and 8, become a thing one day, I think they'd be best off just using GTA 6's game engine. It's probably why they're putting so much effort into it, so they can use it for multiple games in the future. Maybe that will make 7 take less time than 6 as well. I would love a Liberty State and Alderney based GTA 7, especially a period piece set as a GTA 4 Prequel in 2004-06. Maybe the character being Packie or multiple of the McReary bros, with a Yankton/Guarma short feature of Ireland during the Troubles. That'd be such an awesome game.
That industrial building you visted at the end gave me ptsd. First time I ever tried a game mode online was a deathmatch on and around that building. I got spanked so hard, practically bullied by the other players, that it was all I ever thought about when in that area from then onwards.

Finally, a fellow baggage car respecter. I just love the way it handles for some reason. My favourite thing to do on GTA4 online way back when was just spending hours touring the map in the baggage car with Jazz FM on repeat amidst all the other chaos. Started my lasting love of Chet Baker. Let's Get Lost indeed, brother.
I get done watching the other 2 parts and a few hours later you post the 3rd, luck is not my specialty.. but I do make sure to thank it when it comes to me. Your videos are a charm, I know a vast amount of developer knowledge more so then my friends and its cool when I can appreciate things that come with developing games, I also mod a few game too. I like to kick back and watch people explore words in games or break out of them and you take the cake when it comes to imagining the lore behind detail that Rockstar put their or any studio for that matter just for detail and to serve no real story or purpose.
The interior locations are scattered almost evenly across the map concentrated in certain areas. I believe that areas like the laundromat are intended for Multiplayer modes like deathmatch. I have been playing GTAconnected a lot recently, and I love taking people on a tour of the enterable buildings, starting at the XXX shop. People are always amazed by that. There is a great reddit post that outlines all the enterable buildings in the vanilla game, but there are some more in TBOGT, such as the Rotterdamn Tower Lobby
I remember that industrial area was used during two missions for the payphone missions you get for phil during the story, i can't remember the name of the mission but i remember you had to intercept a deal between the angels of death and some mafia guys, it was pretty fun
Rockstar are the kings of the open-world. Their games are always so interesting to explore and they always feel like they really exist independently of the player.

Fun fact: according to the wiki there was a planned “Dozer” and “Steamroller” vehicles, would’ve been nice to see those scattered about the construction sites,I wonder if the Dozer would’ve been the GTA 5 version, the SA version,or something new entirely
Hi Pretzel! 👋 I wish we got the Catskills in GTAIV, Fire Island would have been a great addition as well. I hope 6 isn’t just one big land mass like 5. San Andreas has my favorite map. 😊❤
8:25 the reason for the money drops all over autoeroticar is because of a mission you do where you kill some mobsters in it, thier bodies drop money, and after you're done killing all of them, the mission ends and it auto saves the game for you and the money saves there by itself. I know this because I used to get a wanted level then lead the cops to my safehouse and savw the game, and even after re launching the gwme you could still see Thier weapons and money scattered everywhere
There are so many stairwells that you can go up in GTAIV and get on the roof. I tried to explore as many as I could. I've also definitely explored the gas refinery in Alderny as well, hoping for an easter egg or at least a weapon pickup.

Something tells me Rockstar knew what they were saying naming a place West d*ke. I mean, it is an actual name that exists, but idk, given that it's rockstar I would not put it past them
The spaces like the industrial area for example, were originally online freedom spawn areas. I spent a lot of time playing this on Xbox when it was released, and latterly using gta connected on PC. I miss the heyday of this game, with overflowing lobbys
10:27 you could be right... VI leaks showed that Rockstar reused bits and bobs from one specific spot near Vespucci beach, Vespucci Mall, with a Binco and some stores. It's just flipped horizontally and changed a bit. In the same way, if you go to the LS Port you'll see a sign that says LC Port Authority on two hangars because they were taken straight from IV and the devs forgot to change the texture. Not sure if E&E changed it but its still there on PC and older versions I believe.
I know gta 6 isn’t even out yet but, As much as I would love to see rockstar touch another location like carcer city for the next GTA after 6, I wouldn’t be made if they took us back to liberty city but added onto it a lot more.

Not to be that guy, but there were a few games between San Andreas and 4. Advance (which came out the same day as San Andreas), Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories.
The thing I always hate about GTA games. Is the actual lack of things to do. You think there’s a lot, and in some ways it is. But it’s really not much to do in the games outside the missions to warrant the huge beautiful open worlds
If you think this game was underutilized wait until you find out about RDR2... They spent the better part of a decade working on that game, with thousands of employees putting thousands of hours of effort into the game and its world, only for Rockstar to instantly abandon it after launch because RDO didnt print them as much money as GTAO. All that effort amounted to nothing in the end. I get that GTA6 was going to be the much larger project and they need the extra manpower for it, but goddamn, they couldve at least appointed a Skeleton Crew to give us SPDLC like RDR1.
Dunno if I agree with it amounting to nothing and I'm not sure the people who put years of their life into making that world would agree either. they still made an exceptional game with a beautiful world with one of the best stories I've ever played in a game, and it's replayable. Don't get me wrong, I would've loved more DLC and online stuff too, but I don't agree that the online mode not working out the way the executives wanted marks the entire game as a failure.
Dude, you've really been fucked by live service doctrine. RDR 2 was stupendously big and filled to the brink with contents, much discovered years after release. It's literally the second best selling games of all times, after minecraft. Their fucking effort amounted to everything. They could selling more expansion packs, but RDR1 barley had any anyway too
That was a great video, I always find them super relaxed.😊😊😊 But I would love to see watch dogs one next video because I think the two games are so similar and I personally like watch dogs one better because it feels so March like home,😊😊😊
With the silent hill 2 remake out, I would love to see you tackle some of the world of silent hill as there are some really interesting environments there.
I’ve played an awful lot of that game, and I didn’t know you could go in the Sprunk factory. (Unless a mission takes you there and I simply forgot) I like these videos though, it’s cool to slow down and appreciate the details in a game that normally aren’t thought too much about.
Great video, though I liked it less than the other two. Maybe me having explored Alderney so much already desensitised me a bit. I'm sad you didn't put the plot of land at the north of Alderney though, with the abandoned mansion and the Sultan RS, especially as it's the only part of the game that really felt like countryside to me, especially with how much you talked about IV not having much countryside.

I found myself drawn to that same parking lot by the lost Mc club a few weeks ago. Just walked around it for like 20 minutes and looked around.
15:23 the lost and the damned has a lot to do in the whole of aldernay Honestly
You should do a morrowind world tour! Lots of vibes on that map!
It's also possible that they modeled the laundromat as a direct reference or homage to GTA3 which also featured an interior of a laundromat
7:40 these stairs were one of my favourite parts things abt the game
Okay, your cleaver segeay at 4:03 on the helicopter was sneaky and genius as all hell lol
GTA 4 and Vice City were the perfect examples of 'size matters not' when it came to their game world design. More enterable buildings in GTA 6 please!
No GTA 6 coming soon with most of the Rockstar staff being fired for all those blunders...
Maybe the map needed a little more open area, not like how gta 5 did it but how rdr2 did. Hopefully gta6 covers that.
Its not chicken coop, i think its some house for the prison dogs
I turn up the brightness and contrast to make GTA 4 look a little more colorful, it really improves the look of the game imo.
Yep, I don't like gray color, idk why people like the gray color so much, probably they emo.
@@Redemption-XM4 True, the urine filter era of gaming was the ugliest imo.
I remember that industrial area was used during two missions for the payphone missions you get for phil during the story, i can't remember the name of the mission but i remember you had to intercept a deal between the angels of death and some mafia guys, it was pretty fun
Beautiful Video! ♥
hearing xenoblade music in a gta video essay just feels so right. two of my favorite open world franchises
If I am not mistaken at 12:45, those are solitarty confinement "cells".
You’re absolutely mistaken. They’re kennels for K9s which all prisons have.
Rockstar are the kings of the open-world. Their games are always so interesting to explore and they always feel like they really exist independently of the player.
Please, PLEASE, play Ballad of Gay Tony and run around in Free Roam. There are so many enter-able locations to explore
I think in 15 years we'll get this in gta7 💀
Just wondering if anyone else noticed the beautiful Metroid music Pretzel used here very fittingly... :)
Sprunk straight from the teat was crazy
That 6th floor in the end, from what i remember all building was used during co-op missions in IV multiplayer, so yeah i been there.
1:56
I never actually beat gta4
As a kid i played like any other child (like a demon) and when i was older i mostly played online with friends, i can only see this building as the soawn point for multiplayer.
The race to the airport will forever be etched into my memories
thank you:))
The background music is very comforting
just noticed the "more teeth" poster is written by Dr. Frankenstein lol
Another wholesome trip down memory lane
Fun fact: according to the wiki there was a planned “Dozer” and “Steamroller” vehicles, would’ve been nice to see those scattered about the construction sites,I wonder if the Dozer would’ve been the GTA 5 version, the SA version,or something new entirely
I wanted to eat pretzels today but didn't have any money, but I compromised. I watched a Pretzel video instead.
My estimation of pretzel as a UA-camr just fuckin skyrocketed
Hi Pretzel! 👋
I wish we got the Catskills in GTAIV, Fire Island would have been a great addition as well.
15:38 i did.
for one during the deal breaker coop mission and i also explored this area on my own.
i also got like 1k+ hours on this title tho.
I love GTA 4
i’m on my third playthrough rn , it’s easily still my favourite gta game of all time , i hurts a lil learning abt its development and how much deeper it could’ve been 💔
5:45 blood stain on the window! I was expecting the No Mercy Witch jumpscare from PDTH lol. (My brother totally didn't freak me the hell out with that once)
I loved the helicopter bit.
Love these videos
Wow...this video is oddly relaxing.
Pretzel you forgot the tunnel beneath the Sprunk factory!
But great video nonetheless!
suggestion for a world tour, take a look at northern journey, might have some interesting places
Something tells me Rockstar knew what they were saying naming a place West d*ke.
I mean, it is an actual name that exists, but idk, given that it's rockstar I would not put it past them
One of my favorite things to do was get a high wanted level then post up in the hospital and see how long i could hold out
I love your videos. I think very similarly about game environments.
The spaces like the industrial area for example, were originally online freedom spawn areas. I spent a lot of time playing this on Xbox when it was released, and latterly using gta connected on PC. I miss the heyday of this game, with overflowing lobbys
i wish you would do the tony hawk's underground series.
GTA V even has a garage with GERMAN signs on them... really caught by offguard back in the day.
I know gta 6 isn’t even out yet but, As much as I would love to see rockstar touch another location like carcer city for the next GTA after 6, I wouldn’t be made if they took us back to liberty city but added onto it a lot more.
i knew the copter joke was comin but still kickin my feet and giggling
SO thats why the casino had the pipe, sprunk direct to consumer pipe from the factory!
nobody said anything so i will, not 100 but i think those are either for bees or compost in the prison
Hi Pretzel, new subscriber here 👋. I love the idea of the videogame world tours, never seen it before and now I'm hooked. Also suggesting Assassin Creed 1 for a future video, keep up the good work! 😊
I think its called casino because of the old casino in edinbrugh by the waterfront. funnily enough leslie benzies the director of gta iv ended up buying up the abandoned building years later and restoring it into a game studio.
Also i did explore that floor! Did u do an easter eggs and hidden spawns video?
Not to be that guy, but there were a few games between San Andreas and 4. Advance (which came out the same day as San Andreas), Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories.
Sadly Playstation exclusive and never got PC versions
They could selling more expansion packs, but RDR1 barley had any anyway too
@15:50 there was an online mission where you had to kill some guys there
11:21 pretty sure you break a window and go onto the roof here
I hope GTA7 is about Liberty City greater area like they planned for GTA4. That would be amazing
The same missions has you throw bricks through the window, the only time in the game I ever picked up something and threw it.
Haven't watched the video but imma say already GTA IV has good detail density
That was a great video, I always find them super relaxed.😊😊😊
But I would love to see watch dogs one next video because I think the two games are so similar and I personally like watch dogs one better because it feels so March like home,😊😊😊
This video reminded me of The Getaway franchise.
There is a Deathmatch map in the industrial area. It is so much fun
With the silent hill 2 remake out, I would love to see you tackle some of the world of silent hill as there are some really interesting environments there.
Red dead redemption made me feel nostalgic for GTA 4
I remember that casino area from playing deathmatch
Do Bully please!
The USA must look so weird in the GTA universe. Just a bunch of islands
I love your videos! I would love if you did this with Sleeping Dogs! It is an interesting setting with a bunch of nice areas
I’ve played an awful lot of that game, and I didn’t know you could go in the Sprunk factory. (Unless a mission takes you there and I simply forgot) I like these videos though, it’s cool to slow down and appreciate the details in a game that normally aren’t thought too much about.
Can you consider doing LA Noire world tour please? Love your videos btw
