  • The most essential modifications for Honda’s venerable 250X or 250EX
    Honda’s TRX250X, formerly known as the TRX250EX, is a t nimble handling, peppy running, sporty looking machine that’s great at getting new riders hooked on the fun ATVing. It’s reliability allows it to be handed down in families again and again adding a lot to its value. One of the best things about it is that iIt’’s a machine that younger riders can afford to save up for and purchase.
    Like any other sport, new riders tend to improve at the fastest rate in the beginning. In motor sports, even recreational ones, this often results in a desire for upgrades and performance parts. Based on our review of the 2016 250X and our time spent riding the machine since, we put together an upgraded version of the 250X and 250EX looking to improve it in every way while covering some absolute essentials.
    With a few hours of installation time and a modest amount of money, we made our 250X a tougher, safer, and more stable ATV with peppier power and, in our overall opinion, increased its overall appeal. This combination of upgrades work well as a whole or you could pick and choose the upgrades that fit your needs best. This ATV is all about having fun, and we think our hopped up 250X delivers more of it.

      @@aenarcos7021 I'm so sorry we missed this question. We need to make a video on this in the future. There are two types of a arms, standard travel and long travel. You can achieve around the same wheel travel with either setup. However, long travel refers more to the length of the shock used. Standard travel will typically use a stock length shock in long travel requires the use of a slightly longer shock. Anytime you add wider aftermarket A-Arms, you will need to have your shocks revalved and re sprung to deal with the added Leverage. Simply cranking up your shocks spring preload is not sufficient. If you plan on adding long travel a arms then you will either have to have your stock shocks lengthened, in addition to the other before listed modifications which can only be done on certain models. Adding an axle does not require you to do anything to your suspension. We did the rear shock on our Raptor redone to match the fronts. We worked with Race Tech on this build. They can help you figure out what you need or if you have any other questions feel free to hit us back.

      @@ATVonDemand Alba is making extended long travel a arms that come with adapters on them so your able to run the OEM shocks. Can’t really beat the price and then you have the option to change to “long travel” shocks later by simply unbolting the adapters and removing them which gives you the lower mounting point for the LT shocks. That’s what I went with and was able to mount the Alba a arms immediately with the OEM shocks on my quad while I waited for months for my custom PEP shocks to be built and sent out to me. That was really nice because I got the Tusk +6 rear axle as well and the Alba a arms aloud me to enjoy the benefits of the extra width front and rear while I waited for good shocks. So I was still able to ride the quad and there was minimal downtime, just something to think about. I had my raptor to the local Motocross track already and put the Alba a arms and everything to the test and they held up to whatever abuse I could throw at it so I wouldn’t be afraid to run those A arms in any situation.

    That's a good looking quad! I loved my 700 but with a wider body I could see myself clipping more trees and rocks at high speeds. I had to replace my steering column twice. It doesn't look like anything has been done to help the lights from breaking off in a roll over either. I'll bet that thing would be real fun in the dunes!

    That's about what I'd be looking for in a new quad. Lower maintenance than a 450 as well. I had a yfz450R and bought it exactly because it had a low center of gravity. Where I live, it's dusty and we're able to hold the bikes topped out, so I had to shim my valves every 2 months. A wider Raptor would have fit the bill just perfectly. The MT-07 engine would be great for a 700RM model. Or maybe the super tenere 1200 engine, and call it the Rex.

    By all means! Keep sport quads alive! My 18 year old son is buying a raptor , I’ve had a raptor for a couple years and I’m tired of working on old $#!!. I would buy a 700rr and sell mine for an extremely discounted price to my 14 year old son! Then I would have some incredibly maintained 80s-90s sport quads for sale! We all start from somewhere .

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  3 роки тому

      That's cool that you and your son are rocking sport quads. You might have to toss a couple grand to build your own RR. Yamaha doesn't have to do much without competition. The Raptor sells itself. You bring up a good point, compared to the amount of time you spend working on new machines is greatly reduced. Sport quads are also a lot easier to work on than 4x4 ATVs or SXS.

    Also, an fz09 and fz10 version. Also, supermoto versions all around. Also, a wr450r like the wr250r, and a wr650r like the ktm 690 enduro and wr250r. Then a big twin (~1000cc) fully faired sport (not super sport) bike.

    I'd buy one for sure. Part of buying a new machine for me is not messing around and buying all kinds of new parts. I want to purchase something like this. Then all I have to do is add a programmer and a dual pipe option and perhaps some beadlocks. I'm a trail guy and I'm 41 years old. I still don't see a SXS in the near future. I'll never understand why people younger than me want SXS's. I get it. What ever floats your boat. However, I'm a hands on type of guy. SXS's just seem like the lazy approach. When I can't blast through the woods on my own anymore, then I'll buy a SXS. Until then, build the Raptor RR. It will sell judging by all the comments. Raptors already fly out of the dealerships here in PA.

      Ralph Kowalski that's why part of our goal with his project was to maintain the use of his many current factory parts as possible like the shocks. A slightly wider Raptor shouldn't cost much more than the current model.

    • @Holgrinator
      @Holgrinator 6 років тому

      It wouldn't cost Yamaha much to make the changes. But we are talking about the company that charges an additional $300 for a "special Edition". What's so special about the SE to justify the cost.... color. Yep, $300 for a different color. I love my raptor $700. But you know damn well they'd charge $1500 to $2000 more for the "Double R" if they already charge $300 just for yellow or black plastics. I'll keep my base model, and upgrade it myself. Currently running Barker Dual exhaust, FCI intake, and MSD fuel programmer, with custom suspension work on the oem shocks. I love yamaha but I don't see them doing this without A. Passing the cost on to the customer, and B. Making more profit off the change.

    @furiousatvmct.v.3685 6 років тому

    Honest Opinion. I would like to start off by saying great video loved the build. As a owner of many Yamaha's including my Raptor 700R SE what I would like to see an upgraded model offering is that new YFM 850cc engine or maybe even a 1000cc pushing that light weight frame. I would not lower the stance any as this is a bonus for trails and Ground clearance is an absolute must have especially for a single axle sport quad, hard to ride a side hill if you don't clear a tree root or washout, Also an adjustable ECU that has a programed back up map for performance installed off the showroom floor would be great, although not necessary and probably hard to produce with due to emissions standards. But honestly It really is a downer to have to spend an extra $1500 and upward just to optimize a performance machine for performance, I mean you practically pay just for tuning ability and a proper exhaust and intake to aspirate that 700 up to its natural potential. The wide stance is also nice in areas but is not always a bonus, obviously suspension is always key and always a welcomed upgrade especially with sport because you want the bumps and the jumps and everything between. The electrical hardware is already more than enough and less is best off road although the speedometer should be brought back, its simple just add a bigger faster engine its time. #FreeTheRaptor1000R

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  6 років тому +1

      Adding a bigger heavier engine without making the machine any lower or wider would only make it handle worse not to mention a real pig in the weight department. We're all for Yamaha making a 850-1000cc machine to take on the Scrambler and Renegade but those are 4x4 machines. The 2wd sport segment has always been about light weight, maneuverability, and the rider controlling the machine. We have tested several 800 pound plus machines and the rider has a much lower level of control if things get sketchy.
      Also, we have seen the programmable ECU on the YZ450R dirt bikes which you can tune with your phone. We would LOVE to see this technology on ATVs but we're pretty sure you will never see it, or the uncorked exhausts you desire. There is no off-road race segment for ATVs like there is dirt bikes. Manufacturers have to produce ATVs that are quiet enough and burn clean enough to pass more and more stringent EPA standards. Suzuki had a second map available in their LTR450 and pretty much got that machine fined out of existence. The prior year, Can-Am's DS450 a mysterious green wire that if you cut added a lot more power through a second map. They suffered huge fines from the EPA as well. Manufacturers are able to sell dirty emission, off-road dirt bikes in two and four-stroke variations because of a market segment that ATVs don't have and manufacturers aren't likely to lobby for. That's why we don't see any two-stroke quads or programmable ECUs on ATVs or UTVs

    • @furiousatvmct.v.3685
      @furiousatvmct.v.3685 6 років тому

      Hey thanks, I appreciate your feedback your videos are good quality and very informative, Although honestly speaking on the base of mathematics and light weight four stroke engineering of today, if you were to truly break down the the general motor specifics and dynamics you will find the weight would be somewhere in the ball park of 10-23lbs in the difference between 700cc to the 850cc-1000cc. realistically and respectively that would make it roughly 432-445lbs wet weight, and works out to at least an 18-30% power increase to about a 4-6% weight gain. As you know there is more of a significant difference in weight between riders and gear at times. My point is with properly adjusted suspension for the rider I assure you the Raptor 850R's weight or handling would not disappoint,
      Stance extensions are not a bad thing either, it's a great upgrade. But don't lower ride height, you can adjust sag & springs for that anyway just like in your video, not to mention we have the 450s to cover the low center dynamic.The 450 quad is way too low for my preference I'm 6,1" that's what initially interested me in the Raptor 700R in the first place, it was simply the larger machine. At only 422lbs wet it's very comfortable to handle and still agile enough to still be able to ride a track because realistically there is only about 17lb of difference from the YFZ 450R. I would slightly extend the swing-arm along with suspension travel with a-arms & axle to fully complement a more powerful engine not without it
      .
      The first upgrades to the typical raptor of today Is the "Big 3" optimizer, intake and exhaust. And most of the time that's followed by hotcams and big bore kits ect. That's over body kits and any other upgrades on the market. It would be arbitrary to put anything ahead of performance upgrades. In regards to Yamaha's and other manufactures production policy along with EPA regulation my knowledge is limited. I am not nearly educated enough on the subject to truly discuss the matter, as to why I only touched on the subject in conjunction with my comment when discussing "having to purchase expensive optimization programmers and other equipment in order to gain the ability to tune the machine" ultimately addressing the fact that a more tunable unit would be appreciated. Flashing and bypassing the original ECU is typical practice today and is not very cost effective in my opinion, Speaking from the perspective of a customer with over 20years experience riding and turning wrenches.
      Leave the 4x4 market for the Grizzly model to address, I'm sure the updated Raptor will more than certainly follow an updated version of Grizzly that will directly compete with the Scrambler & Renegade machines.

    unless on the dunes or the street, and if insisting on keeping 2x4, absolutely more rear clearance is needed. I hate that the sport market is dead, save for Yamaha. But as much as I love shifting and tossing around a light sport quad, I need something that can go a lot of different places/through a lot of different terrain, especially for the money a single unit commands. There is certainly a reason (ok, many reasons) why the "sport" 4x4 market is what it is today vs sport quads. The fact that these machines are costing nearly as much (or more) than full-on automobiles and have a laughable warranty/maintenance schedule for the $$...a lot of people need something that does it all, as they can't just buy one for each occasion. Despite their considerable bulk, the Scrambler/Renegades of the world have lots of power and can ride in more environments. I'm not saying anything people don't already know (except manufacturers, for some reason), but I was hoping for something a bit more groundbreaking than "we widened it". Either way, I appreciate the work and time everyone put into this. I'll take small steps over no steps, I suppose.

      We have had this discussion with Yamaha actually. This is not an exact quote but this is what we were told. As you have probably noticed Yamaha still makes 2 stroke dirt bikes. From what we gathered, the EPA or whatever government agency that deals with the approval of new vehicles has a classification for red sticker off-road dirt bikes. All ATVs that are sold have to be green stickered which means they burn extremely clean. Red sticker Vehicles do not and you cannot get green stickers for them to take them to off-road areas like many sand dunes , national forests, Etc. While there is a red sticker classification for the sale of off-road dirt bikes there is no red sticker classification for the sale of ATVs that do not burn clean enough to be green stickered. Perhaps all of the manufacturers could get together and petition the government to create a red sticker classification but it is unlikely that any manufacturer can do it alone and unfortunately there is not enough interest in the sport segment that we love. So basically, Yamaha would probably like to sell you a new banshee but the Paris climate Accord loving bureaucrats in our government don't think you should be allowed to have a two stroke even though they fly around on private jets. That is our opinion not yamaha's.

    • @ATVonDemand

      We had our shocks revolve Andre sprung by Race Tech. They can set up the stock shocks for you or build you aftermarket shocks if you like. That's only really necessary if you're going with long travel A-Arms and will need a longer shocks. Our setup did not.

    700r

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  5 років тому

      Great question! Without looking too far into it here are the things that stand out most. Displacement of an engine has little to do with its retail price. Complexity and materials have more to do with it. The Raptor has a 4 valve single overhead cam engine while the YFZ uses a 5 valve double overhead cam engine. The YFZ also uses titanium valves. Well the Raptor and YFZ both use shocks with similar adjustments, it's pretty safe to say that the shocks on the YFZ are definitely a bit nicer. Aside from the obvious Kashima coating on the YFZ shocks and their larger size, suspension tuners tell us that the overall quality of the materials are better.

  • @paytoncooper286

    How about just using wheel spacers rear and front and keeping shocks stock to save $ but get the wider stance???

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  5 років тому

      Great question! Using wheel pacers will widen your machine's stance aiding stability, however ,they put more leverage on the stock axle when jumping increasing the chances of bending an axle. Up front the machine becomes harder to steer and bump feedback is increased through the steering. The wider the wheel spacers, the more stability you gain, but the worse the negative drawbacks become.
      We've used wheel spacers or wider offset wheels on lighter weight and less powerful machines like the Yamaha Blaster or Honda 250EX / X to save some $$$. However, the more powerful and heavier a machine, the greater the drawbacks become. We hope this helps.

    • @Subi_doo
      @Subi_doo 5 років тому

      ATVonDemand yeah just seeing if the dealers can actually do that because Yamaha likes those plastic ones to much.... if it was “Delrin” I’d be keeping it because that’s better and lighter than the aluminum ones. I’m so in the air as to what I want.... 700 or 450.... Sorry, but your video made it so much harder to decide now because it shows how good both quads are, which is completely not your fault I might add. I like the 450 width and height, but I like the raptor 700 engine smoothness.... maybe I should just go 700 and add a widening kit.....

    • @voxpopuli905
      @voxpopuli905 4 роки тому

      Nah I think I’d rather build up a 450. The chassis is far superior and much lighter and it wouldn’t take much to mod that engine and get probably even more performance than the raptor offers.

    • @voxpopuli905
      @voxpopuli905 4 роки тому

      Tiny McPoop Ok but what about the chassis design and it’s ability to actually use that added extra power? I mean... I could throw a ESR330 powervalved engine in my lawn mower and make it faster as frig.... but I’m not gonna. Idk man I think I’ll just stick with the Honda. The Craptor is an ok machine, but when I’m spending thousands of dollars start getting into the details and it’s just a fact that the TRX450 is very very very closely designed off the TRX250 chassis and that chassis set the bar for superior race stability and cornering capabilities at race speeds with the ability to do so using mondo horsepower and lunatics at the throttle. And quite frankly that bar has never been topped by any other maker. Only by makers who are literally copying the the TRX250 geometry. It’s just a fact.
      It’s lower center of gravity and narrow framework between the a arms and not to mention the litany of aftermarket parts to make it even wider stronger longer and better is just a mile long. Sooo idk why go for pretty good when can be fukn amazing? Honda simply just came up the absolute best combination of measurements and angles and it really can’t be beat.
      To be totally honest I’d much rather skip both of these and go directly to the TRX330 and just be done w it. And probably the only reason I’d go to the TRX450R is if I absolutely wanted a brand new machine that’s only been ridden by me.
      Like I said I’m not shitting on the Craptor. It’s pretty ok machine, I’ve ridden quite a few, it’s basically for Yamaha fans. I’m not saying it’s not good, I’m just saying it’s not number ONE that’s all. Maybe a person who’s taller or heavier would want one over the other. That’s also a factor. I’ve had banshees I’ve had Tri-Zs before. So it’s not that I’m a Honda fan boy that thinks only Honda makes good stuff. It’s just that this chassis like I said is simply that much better. It’s just all there is to it

    • @voxpopuli905
      @voxpopuli905 4 роки тому

      Tiny McPoop Back in the day the TRX set more race records than anything on the market. And even today those records have only been replicated by the fact that this chassis by default was almost taken out of the game, by regulations demanding a in production machine....and then the intro to the 400EX kept it in the game. Yamaha has a 450 and that chassis is also better than the top heavy raptor. I’d definitely go w that one over the raptor also, and guess what else.... Yamaha was also staring at 250R blueprints when they built their 450 also. They tried to disguise it, but anyone paying attention can see this in the front cross section.
