This vlog series is really helpful to me- I just graduated with a degree in piano performance in the states and am looking for gigs to take me different places. A friend mentioned looking into being a cruise ship musician so now I’m checking it out. You’ve got a great range of repertoire! If you make another vlog, i would love to see the pros and cons of your time as a pianist on the ship. Thanks!
Great series so far! This job really intrigues me I have a couple questions.
1)how did u get the job and what was the audition like?
2)how much sight reading does it require? This is my biggest weakness so could I get away with mostly having stuff prepared, improvised/memorized or would I need to quickly read new music often?
1) I was contacted by Hapag Lloyd through my website. There was no audition required because of my UA-cam channel.
2) Not much sight reading is required, but sometimes you need to learn new repertoire in short amount of time (for morning messes, guest requests, special events, accompanying other artists / choir,...). My sight reading also sucks and so far it wasn't a problem at all.

My son plays each week in the piano bar of a local 5-star hotel. He jokes it's like a cruise ship without the seasickness. He can easily name all the pieces you played because he plays the same ones! I'm curious if that cruise line also has invited musical guests to come perform from time to time? Also, do you get to play accompaniment with any of the other musical acts onboard?

I have watched your performance videos but only just started watching your vlog Really cool stuff. I was wondering how you practice on the ship? is there a piano where there are no guests?
Backstage in the theatre there is one I can use when there are no events / rehearsals. Otherwise in one of the clubs during the day with headphones on a digital piano
How much time of repertoire you are required to bring to one Cruise? The video is very interesting!
There is no specific time but the repertoire needs to be very big and include lots of different pieces from different genres.
What was piece you played in the introduction? It's beautifully played and I've heard it dozens of times but I still don't know the name of it. I feel kinda dumb not know such a popular piece haha

Does your repertoire have to be completely memorized or are you able to play from music? Like an iPad or tablet? Often wondered about being a cruise ship pianist 🤔
You can do it however you want!
Hello! I love your job. I am also a pianist and would like to audition for a cruise ship. How many songs do I need to have in my repertoire to apply? ¿100,150,200?
There’s no specific number, but a lot
@leonorangelicagarciagarcia9999: as @@MagnusBaumgartl said : a lot, and I add - as much as possible - competition is hard.... Brain Jukebox has to be loaded with at least 1000+ different pieces, many genres, you have to be good at transposing too( for ex. changing the pitches during playing a song) and also good improvisation, perfect sight reading is very important and bonus for being hired as CSpianist too.. I've passed the audition in 2020 for crusing company for Latin America destinations. Magnus, congrats for your professional performance on your current cruise job, please do more vlogging it's nice to watch them.

I think the cruise management were lucky to have a pianist of your caliber
