Wow, they upgraded them from when we were there in '89! We hired a basic Fiat with a TWO-speed gearbox. One forward and one reverse! I asked the chap at the desk..."which side of the road do you drive on?" "Round the potholes", he said!
THOSE WHO HAVE VISITED MALTA WILL KNOW WHAT I,M TALKING ABOUT...the old buses were suited for malta..THEN THE PHONEYS IN BRUSSELS DECIEDED THEY HAD TO GO......THEN ARRIVA STEPPED IN AND MADE A COMPLETE COCK UP OF THINGS..1 HAVE WAITED OVER AN HOUR FOR AN ARRIVA BUS BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL FULLUP...A COMPLETE SHAMBLES the max i waited for an old bus was 10 minutes..if that..A COMPLETE BALLS UP...AND VERY SAD.....
+lithiumdeuterid I was in Malta in May 1997, These old buses certainly did have more character than the modern ones as you say. Rode on these old buses every day. It's a pity a corporate big boy like Arriva had to come in and spoil things,
Arriva may have made a big cock up of things, and who was behind it would have been jailed in another civilised country. Roll on 2016, I came back to Malta to visit, but the buses and the routes now are brilliant. I also use the Tal Linja App and gave me all the connections and knew to the minute when the next bus was due. Arriva were paid of millions to leave and a new operator is in, and they seem to be doing a great jon. The new buses 2016/2017 compared to the horror stories and abuse endured on the above pieces of junk spewing cancerogenic fumes that didn't even cover 50% of the island.. well think again or come back to Malta to experience it. Though mind you, not much to bring you back to Malta these days, it's just one massive mess of a construction site and new 25 stories towers popping up, not to mention total gridlock any time of day. Worse than London or Boston! I prefer to jet off to Greece or Tunisia for the same price - it's cheaper anyway.
Those buses look nice the older buses the engine it could be a Cummins engine though those buses would never make it to America but they should at least try
Public Transport Worldwide yeah I gathered that but the running gear and engines are mostly the same just serviced and rebuilt which is pretty good considering some of these buses date from the 50s
i am glad to have seen them in 2010 a piece of history fondly remembered
I really miss the old buses specially designed. Unique.
Thank you for this montage! Brings back many happy childhood memories ☺️
A part of Malta died when they removed these buses.

Those were the days .....
when I went on vacation in the 80's, these buses were green in color
The Volvo in 2:23 was manufactured partially in Greece (Sarakakis Brothers body on a B7RLE chassis).
Excellent was there in 2004
I remember the old green buses of the 70s

Yes, very sad indeed. I visited Malta in October 1997 and I really loved these old buses. They had more character than modern buses have technology.
I agree they were fun for a little kid like I was back then.

ron taylor Agreed totally from the UK !!
Where did the owners get spare parts for the very old models? Some of them look as if they were decades old.
Lots of these buses were rebuild with new parts like engines and gearboxes.
Please, somebody, invent time travel
Di Malta bisnya seperti bis Jakarta tahun 1970an sangat sederhana, dan penduduknya sangat jarang.
This is a new Fb page and Vlog about one of the buses that is now being converted to a Community Bus. facebook.com/CommunityBusMalta/

Calvin Crews they are British busses, mostly Leylands Bedford’s AECs and Fords the engines will probably be Perkins or just built by the manufacturers
