All I give a shit about is if my Jiujitsu translates to the streets where it really fucking matters..

the real question is, "Is a black belt worth anything if a blue belt with some muay thai who trained bjj specificly for mma can beat the shit out of the black belt in a fight"

    • @bman8882

I don't think you need some Muay Thai but a lot to have success against a black belt in BJJ

  • @michaelstrong4823

To Gracie Barra nothing transfers ever. You have to train in their Gi and rash guard. You have to certify yourself with the IBJJF which is Carlinhos’, he changes the rules as he sees fit.

Schools making people train in their own gi is fucking stupid. I live in a big city so have a lot of choice - I went to a famous school and they said you can’t train unless you wear their gi. Fucking stupid and culty martial arts bull shit.

It also depends on your personal gi style. A guy whose game is based on the lapel will likely have more difficulty in the nogi transition. MG as they mention is one of the most extreme examples of someone whose gi and nogi games are almost identical.

No gi = more scrambles, angles and levels.
Gi = more grip fighting and positional control.

I find that gi is harder to train with vs no gi. With gi it's allot of grip training..Where as no gi is just much more scrambling. To get good at both just means train both.

As a purple belt in no gi I 100% agree with this! Went from competing with black belts in no gi (also was a D2 wrestler) to getting spanked by blue belts in the GI when I first started the GI...

@@soulsrunner7476 why did you keep getting destroyed? Was it the gripping part?

Get a blue belt in the Gi then go do No-Gi IMO

That gi only black belt gets heel hooked by a white belt in no gi easily. I've seen it happen numerous times. Either both belts transfer or they don't.

Some good points. Such as taking in options versus taking away options. I think especially when defending. Putting on a gi is like putting on a weapon for your opponent to use on you. The adjustment may or may not be hard tho. Because some people adjust to gi jiujitsu coming from nothing easier than others. I came from wrestling and due that I feel can be harder than coming from nothing. Some people are just better all around at jiujitsu and progress faster or slower.

I was doing just strictly the go when i was a white belt for two years then i started doing no gi, my skills in the gi didn't transfer to no gi and i basically didn't know what to do, i felt like a brand new white belt

    • @nickyryan777

Ive been white belt training a total of 6 almost 7 years now consistently. I never put a gi on after my first year and never got another belt or stripe. Only gym anywhere near me though and i love jiu jitsu. I cant compete because i demolish white belts and im officially a white belt. Im basically a brown belt in disguise 😂😂😂😂. I really want to compete, but i dont want to stir any trouble with my gym or leave a bad taste so i just train enjoy jiu jitsu and respect the professor and his rules and honestly am just really so appreciative that i have a gym that im blessed to train in, maybe one day i will have some sort of option that allows me to start competing at my actual skill level.

heavy emphasis on wrist control in nogi. for me that seems to be the trick. wrist control and feet on the hips when possible. nogi is fun and high paced.
GI is opposite. i like to burn people out with grip and pressure(im only 150lbs). its a physics game. GI is my fav but nogi is more fun…if that makes sense lol

Going to a NoGi school and getting a BB and then going to a gi school and getting a BB is a huge journey. Why not get a BB at a school that does both every week?

  • @walkingcorpse1224
    @walkingcorpse1224 5 років тому +3

I always tell people to just train Gi, I guess do once a week No-Gi, compete in both. I train most in the Gi, but when I do go in and train in No-Gi, it's still pretty easy for me. So I can't use collar chokes and my throws don't work and my Rat Guard reaquires me reaching for my leg since there's no belt to grab and everything's slippery, that's alright, I don't even feel like I adjust, I simply just do and adapt really easily. Someone who has never trained in the Gi always says the same thing to me "I can't move as fast, the I get stuck alot, it's harder to escape positions, I don't know any gi submissions." Etc... A gi from the Gi backround will usually say they're not used to this, they get over it and play with what they have. Plus I mean No-Gi is No-Gi, there's no belt in it, just like there's no belt in Boxing or Muay Thai, so would I consider someone who's "a black belt" In no-gi a black belt in the gi? Idk I'd have to roll with them, if they can get up to speed quickly enough then maybe they can just advance to the gi format and get a black belt, so simple answer is at first no, they gotta at least roll in the gi and compete and do well in the gi. That's my take on it and like I said, there's no gi anyways so therefore, there's no belt...

I just figured that Gi is better for actual real fighting not mma witch is sport. Most the time in a real fight the person will be wearing clothes like at least jeans or something. Probably a jacket if Its kinda cold that's Gi to me. t-shirt & jeans advantage Gi guy. when you get locked up they pretty much give everyone shitty Gi's too. shitty county blue Gi's I call em lol. ill finish my black belt with Gi. Just a way better chance you won't be fighting butt naked. even in jail the other guy will have his Gi on when he comes to stab you in the shower.

There are no no-gi black belts. If you dont know anything about gi tecniques, spider, de la riva etc... you are not a real bjj black belt.
