theory here is that MC started as a literal lab rat. a purple one.

My theory is that MC was a lab rat, literally, got experimented on and somehow gained the ability to shapeshift.
The scientist dude helps the rat escape (prolly cause someone is trying to get to the rat.) The guy died though, and the rat took on his likeness to roam the human world.
Notice how MC always have pointy ears and a tail, and during the lst sequence with the doppelganger, the reflection is wearing the lab coat with human ears. This was the scientist, or, a representation of him in the MC's mind at least.
Not sure on the symbolism on the self-cest(?) going on here but at least MC made it out alive and well. And maybe he'll meet werewolf boy and the red guy eventually

at 1:06 theres a figure very similar to the evil goat guy we saw in the last song 👀
i feel like the concept here is to embrace the other side of himself, rather than repressing it with a fight.
the mirror scene is a moment of vulnerability where him, the experimented guy who can shapeshift while having rat features, cries in front of a mirror. his reflection is still his past self, what he used to be before it, human ears and without a tail. that reflection serves as an antagonist, tells him what he has become now is wrong and holds him up for it to try mislead him, serving as the embodiment of insecurity the mc always wants to run from.
through the fight of himself, he runs away from his past but eventually decides not to let the insecurity of who he is get to him, instead bringing his other side closer not to forever be rid of but to embrace as a part of himself. they soon merge as one, as he learns to accept both sides of him as a singular person regardless of his past or what he could be. the person he is now decides to accept both who he is now and how he wasn't in the wrong for simply being able to survive even if someone else died in the process.

right. and his past self also having a lab coat and theories on him being the scientist... i think we can also interpret that how we like :P could be a kiss directed for the scientist too while he fights his inner turmoil etc, this depiction of insecurity could also be survivors guilt
I like where you're going with this but I don't think mc is the scientist I think he's the rat.
In the flashbacks we see the rat being experimented on, then the scientist trying to escape with the rat but gets shot and dies. We know mc can shapeshift so he likely took the form of the scientist since he helped him escape.
In the mirror scene mc's reflection take on the human appearance of the scientist and tries to strangle him, I think this is supposed to represent mc blaming himself for the scientist's death. He thinks the scientist would hate him and want him dead so his reflection reflects that. (lol)
In the falling scene mc has a flashback where we see the scientist smiling and saying something to him after being shot, I believe he may have told mc it's not his fault or something along those lines, which is why mc suddenly smiles because he stops blaming himself and realizes the reflection of the scientist isn't real.
The kiss might just be his way of finally thanking the scientist for saving him, instead of running from him out of guilt for his death.
The reflection might just be some other supernatural entity disguising itself as his reflection/the scientist (maybe a spell cast on him from the sigil he stepped on prior to the mirror scene?). It used his own insecurities to attack him but he overcame his own fears and was able to defeat it.

i'm so invested in this story, it seems to be connected in some way with "i am a werewolf", same universe perhaps?
first of all, roi never disappoints! I want adopt this little meow meow (or should i say squeak squeak) ;-;
but i have a theory re the 'evil' and 'good' rat. i don't think either of evil but rather two conflicting emotions on the researcher that made him. It's the trauma they (the scientist) inflicted on him (the rat) during the experiments and enjoying the first taste of freedom when they passed vs the affection they showed him in their final moments, risking their life to free him. (Or in simpler terms, the urge to go crazy rat rampaging vs the more honourable urge to avenge his creators).
Hence why the rat was shown reminiscing those three punished scientists, but not too bummed that he failed to set them free - rather, they were ecstatic about the chaos (much like a lab rat on a rampage). He's a bit in denial. He's happy to be free, but survivors guilt (and a sense of responsibility to them for creating him?) is still shackling him. Hence why a lot of the lyrics regarding himself are paradoxes. Hence the 'let bygones be bygones' 'feels good to forget the past' when the man comes out of the mirror to taunt him - but clearly, he still chases after revenge over those that killed the scientists. He's so self-contradictory maybe because at times, he doesn't know what to do with himself. he's stuck in one place, running in circles, much like, say, running on a hamster wheel . . .
in the end he accepted this self-contradiction as fact, moved past the denial and was finally able to break through (by kissing his inner demons, whom are shaped as the researcher ?? but also technically himself ? iconic.), and gain a true free life by letting go of the past - but i have a feeling the true battle has just begun. there will be many more to come. Though, you could also say that by attacking them, they've decided to stay on this path of vengeance. It's all meant to be misleading as the character's facade itself.
One thing's for sure, though he's peeked into his denial and soothed his guilt, by punching it back into oblivion, he'll forever wear the masks that he has glued to his face. He'll forever be Gemini.
Also note: that was most certainly doubles as a thank you kiss to the scientist for helping him escape.

Because as a gemini myself, I really related to it, and the way he made the two personalities of a gemini two people living in the same body is something that i feel and understand .
