Without any dispute John knows music theory in and out, is a fantastic musician but for me this is just finger training and technical theory but no music.
+David Owen Or you are just not a fan and would rather waste your time writing all of these silly comments and look like a fool. Carry on friend.. carry on.
+David Owen Their influences started to get obvious around Octavarium and onward. There older stuff definitely had more personality. Petrucci is one of the more ripped off guitarists today and i dont think he gets the credit he deserves when it comes to influential melodies. He is what spawned a lot of clones (cough Circus Maximus cough) that go for 7/8 mid paced riffs and suspended chords in todays metal, for better or for worse. And to answer your question on the noodling to 80s drum tracks or synth. Its just mindless fun. I love doing it, but i try not to do it all the time. But i sometimes like to just turn my brain off and dick around on the fretboard every once in a while knowing everything i play is going to sound good no matter what. Sure, its cheap, but not when used sparingly. However, i dont think that style is relevant to this video. This approach to attaching leads to chords is a lot more deliberate than you are making it seem.
***** guess you dont know much their early discography. The mention of their only radio single is a bit suspicious. Not sure what you mean by "based on context" and to be honest, its the worst song on that album. The quote is from shakespeare, forgot which play. I dont know or care. Shakespeare is for hipsters.
Im guess you mean Images and Words even though that isnt technically their first album, its the one with the radio hit. Awake is even a little 80s and it came out in 94. But really, is this a bad thing or a matter of preference? We arent talking about Dragonforce here are we? I havent really thought you a "troll" or that you think they such or untalented in some aspect of music, its just i havent heard a good example from you of how sections in particular songs in their first three albums (the 80s sounding ones, and Metropolis, the hipster one) are mindless, uncalled for, wank medleys with no flow that the recent albums have become. To be fair i think Petrucci's solos and the decisions they made on where to put them were restrained compared to most of the bands they idolized.
NightmareGuitarist Yes I know that. But the point is by combining two simple triads all it really is doing is creating an arpeggio based on more complex harmony. So it is not actually really alluding to anything. Its more of an illusion in the players mind that he is playing two simple things when in fact he is not. Its just playing on words :-)
Any time I watch a lesson that inspires me to grab my guitar and start writing. it's a good day!
My mind + this lesson = mind blown to pieces
These lessons are sooo useful for songwriting
+DaShortyJ Can be...if you read between the lines harmonically. Chord theory + harmonic relativity = songwriting.
"So up, down, down, down."
Mind. Blown.
Beast ,,
I just don't know where I'll use this
Sya kasi like walapun sya nda paham :D
Triad is an arpeggio right??
Where is the Majesty? Haha

Well, try to listen to Damage Control(one of his most famous solo-career songs) and come back to say if you've changed your mind

Should the title not be alluding to illusions rather than allusions.
Allusion: an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

this will not get you laid
oh yes it will!
+Salt and lime life Pcbflausa i'd bang petrucci
+Salt and lime life Pcbflausa You're playing for the wrong reason.
+ASquared007 it used to be about getting chix ...not mental or subversive masturbation,,lol
+Salt and lime life Pcbflausa I use musicianship as a mental exercise. To each, their own. :)
*heavy breathing*
