  • A very important record for me. Words from the inlay:
"My brother Stephen died of lung cancer on June 29, the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul. To watch somebody with a life force that verged on the diabolic reduced to a box of ashes overnight was a shock. I'm grieving.
I was with him for five days before he died, all by myself toward the end, when my son Dominick staggered in the waiting room from a brutal two-week hike in the southwest in time to deliver a eagle feather into my brother's hands just hours before he died.
It wasn't as if we didn't know he was dying. The question was, did he know? he had been dying all his life. He was born dehydrated and my mother couldn't nurse him. It hadn't been for penicillin, he would have died from pneumonia at the hospital. He went under the knife so many times in his adult life he was like St. Sebastian, full of arrows. They opened him up last Christmas and found the tumor too close to his heart to operate. But this was his third cancer. There was something about the way he stood up to it that made me think maybe the old reprobate might just scrape by.
I remember him standing in the middle of that miserable apartment in Arlington, rocking slowly back on his heels as he came on terms with his diagnosis. Stage 3 lung cancer, inoperable. 'In [???] Calabrez', he finally said in that dialect he loved to affect, his teeth clenched, his jaw thrust out, 'I survive everything'. And that was that. It might have been the last time he gave his cancer any real thought. He remembered me of that brigand Norman Douglas wrote about in Old Calabria with his two amputated hands cut off and strung around his neck who grinned at the crowd and spat in defiance as they handed him to the gallows.
I sat back in the car on the return from his first visit to the oncologist. His friend John was driving. My brother took a draft from his cigarette. 'Well,' he finally announced dryly in that gravel dirt voice of his straight out of The Godfather, 'it's either radiation, or it's decapitation...' he paused. 'And if it's decapitation...' another pause, 'they cut off your head and replace it with the head of an Irishman. And that's when you know you're not just brain-dead. You're dead-dead'. He tickled his ash."

I do not own this music. I do not monetize this. I will remove this if authorship is enforced. People must have the option to listen this because it is good or have historical value. Ty for your attention and a nice day for you too.
