- The #RashtriyaSwayamsevakSangh, the fount of Hindutva, is arguably the most powerful and influential organisation in India. It's three years from turning 100 and its influence permeates all spheres, from politics to society.
But how did this behemoth come to be, and where is it likely to go?
Welcome to episode 1 of Let’s Talk About: RSS, hosted by Abhinandan Sekhri and Shardool Katyayan.
In this episode, guests Rajshekhar and Indraneel join Shardool in talking about their personal journeys growing up in the Sangh - the camps they attended, the training over the years, and how their opinions have evolved over the years.
“I grew up inside a system where, from waking up till the end of the day, almost every single decision was centred around the daily activities of the shakha,” says Shardool.
Rajshekhar says his realisation of the world outside led to his eventual disconnect with the #RSS. Indraneel says, “The biggest shock was upon reading Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent. It was then I realised that you don’t have to worship the identity you come from."
Parallelly, this episode also explores the birth of the RSS in British India and the life of Keshav Hedgewar, the man who was the seed to what would eventually be the RSS’s tree. Featuring guest panellists like Hartosh Singh Bal, Hitesh Shankar, and Walter K Andersen, the episode pieces together the early days of the RSS, including the many challenges it faced in newly independent India.

I was in 8th class and was going to RSS sakha since Feb of that year. Sakha was near to my home I was learning all sakha activities including exercises, sports infact for few days I use to keep the RSS flag. Then one day, it is First anniversary of Demolition of Babri Masjid. There was a Special event where firy speeches were given, I remember Bharat Bhayya (his name I remember as he was shaka pramukh) gave speech about hindu state and glorification of Babri demolition bla bla bla which was contradicted with what my Social Science teacher was teaching me from the syllabus. That day was the last I attended an RSS skaha

NL folks I am rare of a Muslim who attended Shakha of RSS when I was in grade 8-9. The Shakha is still held in the same park of Banarsi Das Estate community (Timarpur, North Delhi), which lies on the lane perpendicular to the back wall of the Mandir bordering the BD Estate and Govt Qtrs (at that time E Type) in Timarpur. I stopped going once from my late father a English language journalist Ibcame to know as he told RSS had got Gandhi ji killed. It hit me as my father and uncles from paternal as well as maternal side had been freedom fighters. Neither of them took a penny of Freedom Fighters Pension after 1947 all their lives. And my late father had kicked Lahore to return to India in 1950 ( 3 years of it's creation) where he was posted before partition as an Information Officer being from Press Information Bureau, a Central Govt Class I officer job. Being a Muslim he could have risen to top level in the Muslim Pakistan, but he preferred to resign and come back to Delhi, India. Such deep rooted has been in our family the commitment towards creation of India by the freedom fighters who got India for us as a "Secular Nation through the Constitution drafted by Dr Ambedkar and gifted to all Indians"! My experiences with Shakha is another set of stories comprising of those who were my seniors + Pracharaks and who were attending Shakha just like me. Even the fathers of my three classmates residing in the same Timarpur community of North Delhi were daily attendees of Shakha I witnessed.

I genuinely think, rise of extremists is also demise of democracy which open to all discussions. Since ancient time, India, its institutions were based on critical thinking and discussion. The repeated question to Hinduism made it liberal and different from other religions which is strictly based on books and religious spectators. RSS learned, accepted and teached all the bad elements which every person should avoid.

The biggest political and social change happened in India was the creation of hindu identity. It happened after the hindu religious reformation.After that religious reformation, hindu identity politics ( hindutva) and hindu nationalism originated . And the people who were leaning to these started entering congress. And congress started walking in that direction. Biggest example is bal gangadhar thilak. And as a result of creation of a pan Indian identity called hindu. The indian society, became 2 instead of a thousand. It was hindu and muslim identities. And an Idea of India was originated and established. It is British who during census labelled many people with new hindu identity. But it is the biggest mistake they did. The creation of pan Indian hindu identity lead to the destruction of British Empire.

I went to shakha for almost 9 years my father joined shakha in his early 20’s.I failed to get into the best high school in my city as i was average my dad asked help from our local MLA he gave the letter requesting college management to enrol me but they politely declined to do so and then there comes the shakha pramukh krishna ji my father asked him if he can help us one call he hardly spoke 2 mins with whom idk and i was in the best high school in my city even my school fees was taken care of and it was all happening before modi government so imagine what power these people hold now although I stopped going shakha after i moved to warangal for my further studies but it was hell of an experience.

Irrespective of what anyone does or did for years, what matters is what you see them practically. Just like a research medicine maybe whatever in the research lab…..what matters is how it performs in real time. Hence, with what I see; hear or act what their representatives stand for concerns me a lot. Let’s be smart and sensible……

If one happens to be in Nagpur on Dussera-the situation is always tense as Diksha Bhoomi where Dalits from all over India converge is right next to RSS HQ which stages its own show of strength-RSS insiders may say these is no casteism within RSS but during such events RSS and Dalits who reject Hindusim itself to embrace Buddhism are like oil and water.

Also people within the ranks of the RSS either try to defend manusmiriti or totally disavow it, as Maharaj Manu established Ayodhya itself.Top RSS brass has for the most part been a certain sect within Brahmins-its more politics I think.Just like the Baba Gorakhnath peeth always has a thakur mahant the current one bypassed more senior monks who were dalit and bhumiyar(brahmin rulers) and very very respected within the math itself

Those who are think and said RSS is not castist, they should read 'Bhawar Meghavansi's' book.
Merit of RSS is in being ready to evolve and being pragmatic. They accept ideas from anywhere, when they realise it to be good.
They understand that Hindus and India can't be United and strengthened without destroying castism. So they are working towards it.
Other organisations which rely on Abrahamic religions like PFI resist accepting positive changes required as time progress.

I had HOD from RSS and in my teenage I went to their office with my casteist friend and I saw and here where the upper caste group in the end of the day sat alone and made decision and my HOD of department was such a big castiest and he was a Brahmin and not only he hated SC he hated anybody who was opposition to their ideology

One of the things that rss is helping at the ground level is the destruction of caste identity. In the statement given to court by godse, he says I joined rss to fight against caste system and inequality. Rss is not talking against caste and stuff publicly. But it is leading to the destruction of that identity at the ground level. The games in rss shakha , the eating by sitting side by side etc are acts which were revolutionary during 1920s. Hedgewar a chitpavan brahmin is not allowed to touch other castes. But he did this in order to create a hindu identity. I think it has succeeded to a lot of extend.
I personally feel this is a sort of gimmick that RSS has used to survive in the post-independence landscape. But truly speaking, swayamsevaks on the ground will tell you a different story. As a person who closely knows a lot of RSS karyakartas in my vicinity, there's obviously slight ethnocentrism towards Hinduism against Islam; but my experience with them has been mostly peaceful and harmless.
However, though it's not explicitly said to be against those of lower castes, there's a clear push to 'follow your Hindu ideals', which also involves things like not eating with a person of lower caste, not touching harijans, etc. Since I was a child, there were a few Hindu friends of mine who weren't allowed into the homes of other Hindu friends; and weren't allowed to share food with those other friends.
These things seemed rather small, but growing up, I was mature enough to understand why this was done, and it gave a proper insight into how it's a mutual understanding that we're all of different castes and religions; and would have to live peacefully together in that manner. My personal observation as sort of a third party to all this has been that RSS doesn't induce caste discrimination, but it doesn't denounce or discourage it either.

RSS isn't a Terrorist Organisation, as many like to call it.
Yes, many groups like Bajrang Dal, and similar kinds are nuisance to the society, which are often known as sister-concerns of RSS, but RSS at the core level isn't the same as these Dals & Senas.
I don't agree RSS's idea of Hindu Rashtra, and their overall ideology. But, their ideology can't be discarded just because we don't agree with them.
It's the today's BJP that's corrupt & power hungry, the core of RSS isn't corrupt. I know many people who are regulars at Shakhas, we discuss & debate our ideological differences, but we don't abuse and demean each other. Abusing & Demeaning culture is started by the latest version of BJP, ie the BJP of Shah & Modi.
There are flaws in Communist left wing ideology too, which are debatable. Karl Marx's idea of Revolution is debatable as it tries to justify Violence.
Basically, what I learnt from all these years of communication with Left & Right Wing people is that;
If India has to prosper then Indians have to take the Gandhian route. Fight injustice but with non-violence.
As a citizen, our biggest mistake is when we lean to either side of the spectrum, then be it Right or Left.
Being at Left or Right is the politicians space.
Citizens must be pure Centrists. That's the only way to keep our politicians from either sides at check. It's our job to keep reminding them their job of public service for which they are paid thoroughly well with all the perks and pensions.
Don't go for any Unicolour flag, be it Saffron, Red, or Green.
Stand United as Citizens holding the tricolour that represents our nation.
Communities are important for society but as various communities, we should always remember that there's a nation above all of us that holds us together.
