I've looked for a lot of videos for doing under painting videos especially with acrylic and this is by far the best and most well explained video. I find that besides the advantage of setting your values with indirect painting it also give you a great "road map" to work thru your painting when you get to adding color. Amazing and very educational video. Thank you.
this is so great. Not only are your painting and drawing beautiful but you are also a fantastic teacher. This cleared up so much that I have been struggling with. On a side note I have been trying to teach myself via UA-cam and many other websites how to draw. One day I came across an incredible sight, saved the site to my home screen, and began to use it exclusively to learn from, but I never thought to check for UA-cam videos from that site. Today, in a frantic search for knowledge and understanding of how to paint with layers and glazes, I stumbled across this video. And wouldn't you know it the Creator this video and the Creator and teacher on my favorite website are one in the same. So grateful for you. thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.
I started painting with watercolor and for some unknown reason I’ve thought acrylics need too many supplies and I don’t know how to layer them and never cared too, but this method just sings to me!!! I often use grisaille& Brunei underpaintings in watercolor. Now I’m excited to try acrylics, bcuz this is the method I’ll be using.
Thanks so much for this video! I was trained and self taught in art school, direct painting in sort of using a palette knife and using a brush to pull paint from the mixes. I could never find an artist demonstrating "color glazing" as you're showing here.
I am new to painting and was told to glaze but wasn't sure what it is. Found this a great help in explaining. I used burnt umber and white for the underpainting. I will try glazing tomorrow using water.
Thank you, thank you thank you so much I didn't understand how to do this and this tutorial really simplified everything in really easy to follow steps and now I get it now I understand, you got yourself a new subscriber
Great demo,i have developed a product that help me with glazing i can choose one of the 12 colors place it over my work ,i can how that glaze of color will look like before I commit, i work in watercolor ,must try out acrylic, tfs
So a glaze functions similarly to watercolour? You just add a little bit of paint to a lot of glaze and mix it up into a thinned out substance? It would have been helpful to see the mixing process in action.
Great video thank you. I've tried Golden's glazing medium but I don't like the way it is milky. Are there any acrylic glazing mediums that are clear? Thanks
I met a problem. The paint doesnt stick to dried acrylic below, it just washes away with the brush, with medium or not. What's happening and how can I solve it?
Do you have a video on how to use glazing techniques on acrylic painting but not the method of indirect painting? I have a painting w/ flowers and need to punch up the colors and was told to use glazing/complementary colors
WOW,,, This man sure has some SERIOUS talent.... i Wish he could teach me how to draw.... I cannot draw to save my life! Pretty discouraging,, especially because I practice all the time... I dont need to be a master at it, But I should be getting better atleast.... I need some ADVICE people.... Feel FREE to comment! and yes I already know that I have to keep practicing! HELP! Kateri Levasseur
You still going with it? If so Ive learned that no matter how much u practice if u continue making the same mistakes the whole time u don't get better, so if you notice for example ur images are out of proportion focus on that, for ur next pic, so look at the loomis method if it's for faces or something. Or if it's a shadow problem look at how to identify the values, Steve proko is good for this or drawpaint aswell they're both on UA-cam!
This looks fabulous! Thank you for a great video, but the process is.... exhausting in my opinion. I know that layering is absolutely necessary in painting, but this method, indirect painting requires way too much patience.
Isn't there a limit to how diluted you can paint with acrylics? I understood that, at some point, the diluted paint would become unstable in terms of pigment and adherence.
If ur using a medium then it's fine, since the medium is just a colourless binding agent, it's when ur diluting with thinner or water, that it becomes an issue
Just so you are aware: grisaille is pronounced griz-eye, not grease-a-el. It is french in origin, and I think it is important for everyone to know how to pronounce it correctly.
I didn't know this could be accomplished using acrylic paints. Thank you for this excellently clear and informative tutorial!
Thank you for not mangling this wonderful video with ads throughout 👍🏼
One of the most informational videos and explanations I have seen. Thank you so very much for sharing!
Gosh, outstanding little lesson. So clear, so well expressed. Heartfelt thanks.

So amazing. That 'squinting' tip is really going to help. I've never heard that before.

: to look at something with your eyes partly closed.

Very cool
Verdaccio. Bravissimo!
Thank you so much, 💛💜
This video makes me quite hungry; but it's helpful.😋
Thank you very much learned lot
very beautiful
I was wondering if you could do something similar with coloured pencils?
Thank you
👌👌👌
Great video thank you. I've tried Golden's glazing medium but I don't like the way it is milky. Are there any acrylic glazing mediums that are clear? Thanks
you mentioned using carbon black is there a reason for this ,or can other blacks work, tfs
Other blacks are fine too. Ivory black works well. You can also use Raw Umber and white for warmer undertones - or blues for cooler hues.
You're amazing
I met a problem. The paint doesnt stick to dried acrylic below, it just washes away with the brush, with medium or not.
What's happening and how can I solve it?
Amazing. Loved this video.
Is it a necessity to buy matt medium or does simply diluting paint with water work too?
Water works too.
Thnak you

I have a question. Because is it possible to glaze over watercolor graphite pencils with color pencils or watercolor?
Hi here, any visual difference with oil glazed?
This looks fabulous! Thank you for a great video, but the process is.... exhausting in my opinion. I know that layering is absolutely necessary in painting, but this method, indirect painting requires way too much patience.

It would have been useful to have the reference photo on the screen.
Where is your reference?
Thanks for waiting till over 50% of the video had passed to talk about the actual subject.
Just so you are aware: grisaille is pronounced griz-eye, not grease-a-el. It is french in origin, and I think it is important for everyone to know how to pronounce it correctly.
Omg, tasty!
great video but i wished you didnt cut out some of the important parts
I thought glazes are supposed to be done with transparent colors. cadmiums are too opaque. crimson for that cherry. it looks too much like a tomato.
Glazes do perform better with transparent colors, but you can use opaque colors too. Thanks for your opinion, but I like the red I used.
Acrylic inks work well also.
It would be more helpful to show the still life you are painting. Otherwise, we can’t observe the original source so it’s counter-productive.
first.reply plz
Sweet Disco!
awesome glaze on the cake
Seems like a waste of time. Just use straight paint!
