  • The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (French: Bataille de Diên Biên Phu; Vietnamese: Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ) was the climactic confrontation of the First Indochina War between the French Union's French Far East Expeditionary Corps and Viet Minh communist-nationalist revolutionaries. The battle occurred between March and May 1954 and culminated in a comprehensive French defeat that influenced negotiations over the future of Indochina at Geneva. Military historian Martin Windrow wrote that Dien Bien Phu was "the first time that a non-European colonial independence movement had evolved through all the stages from guerrilla bands to a conventionally organized and equipped army able to defeat a modern Western occupier in pitched battle."
    The movie:
Diên Biên Phu (French for Điện Biên Phủ) is a 1992 film written and directed by French veteran Pierre Schoendoerffer. With its huge budget, all-star cast, and realistic war scenes produced with the cooperation of the French and Vietnamese armies, Dîen Bîen Phu is regarded by many as one of the more important war movies produced in French filmmaking history. It portrays the 55-day siege of Dien Bien Phu (1954), the last battle by the French Union's colonial army in the First Indochina War during the final days of French Indochina, which was soon after divided into North and South Vietnam. This was a prelude to the Second Indochina War, known in the United States as the Vietnam War.

This movie was made by Pierre Schoenderffer, a former French army cameraman who requested to be dropped on Dien Bien Phu even though the outcome of the battle was pretty much decided, to document the battle for later generations. Unfortunately the films he made during the battle were lost or destroyed, so he made this movie. It is incredibly emotional and presents the battle as he saw it (we don't even see any vietnamese soldier until this very scene). For added realism, it was entirely filmed on location (not in Dien Bien Phu itself, but not far), with the vietnamese army helping with the recreation of the battle by building hills and digging trenches to mimic the french positions. It is a gritty and realistic portrayal of what that battle was like. Rain, mud, an invisible enemy, death everywhere. That's how every war movie should be.

@JHyun - they were a part of a Vietnamese puppet government that later on became the RVN under US control. They used the same flag. Three red horizontal stripes on a yellow background.
Thats why normal war loving American dont understand how they lose. They reused a corpse.

Those Vietnamese fought with French some for money because they were poor farmers some were members of Vietnam Quoc Dan Party (VNQDD)that Ho Chi Minh had tried to destroy back in 1920's.

well Vietnam has really no alternatives.Western investment ( the US) and free market economy has made this country wealthy and its people prosperous and raised its standards of living . We did the same with china and created a genie that cannot be put back in the bottle without a military option.Vietnam is weaker militarily especially their navy ,leaves them vulnerable to china,s aggressive control of the island and strategic shipping lanes in the south china sea. Vietnam is great my wife and I visited it in 2016. ho chi mi n city was like Vegas, party city..went into a bar got a makers and coke for pretty much nothing..asked the manager about seeing some of the battle sites or finding a tour ,since iam into the history of the war..she pretty much said no cares or talks about much .."long time go...bad for business". So a free market economy with voting rights for city councils, and what would be a governor or premiere .They are terrified of the Chinese and need the US and their Asian partners to protect them

@@snowblind9065 That's very interesting, thank you. What alot of people don't know is that after America withdrew and the South fell, it was a united Vietnam that invaded Cambodia to stop the genoceide of the Khmer Rouge. The two countries were never friendly. But Vietnam did a service to the region from that action even if there were more motives than just stopping the killing.
I'm happy to hear the country is prospouring and our relations with them inproved. From that you described it sounds like a democratic process as far as elections. Is it still considered a real communist countryy?

Rain Coast - That's not right. A major in US foreign intelligence in 1945 said "French Indochina is on fire." He saw that Vietnam was on the way to independence, and any involvement would be troublesome. Truman was distracted by the USSR's threat to the situation in Europe, and needed French goodwill, and they played hardball, wanting their empire back. The US helped France stab Vietnam in the back then, and mishandled the entire Asian situation. Any bad things that happened in Asia, and the US probably had a hand in it. We had people who knew what was going on, but the people in charge weren't paying attention.

But I can't find it anywhere. I've checked UA-cam, Amazon, Hulu, and every pirate website I could think of. Pirate Bay and Putlocker are dead, so no luck there. I even looked for DVDs and came up empty. Any ideas? It's like the earth swallowed this movie and it won't be rediscovered for thousands of years like the Rosetta Stone. Goddammit!
