    My son is studying astronomy and physics, so I need to be conversational in such things as Kepler's Laws. Thanks for the tutorial!

    Had to watch this video like a million times to finally understand the laws but I did it! Never thought orbits would confuse me that much but here we are!

    so t is time it takes to take its one orbit around the earth and r is the distance from the sun if you take t2 divide it by r3 you get its constant my question is what exactly is the constant is that the speed in which the planet is traveling?

    • @ThomasStevensontutor
      @ThomasStevensontutor  4 роки тому +2

      I'm afraid not; the constant is simply a number that's roughly the same for every planet in a given solar system. It was useful historically because it allowed Kepler to understand how the planets moved, and later helped Newton to come up with his theory of gravitation. You can find out more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler%27s_laws_of_planetary_motion#Third_law_of_KeplerTo calculate the speed at which a planet travels, you need to divide the circumference of its orbit by the number of seconds in one year on that planet. (Circumference/time)Hope this helps! :)

    Explanation is awesome but it would have been more good if this was an animation while you were explaining the 2nd law

    • @ThomasStevensontutor
      @ThomasStevensontutor  4 роки тому +2

      Fair enough! I wasn't comfortable with animations at the time I created this video, but will certainly give them a go in future astronomy videos. :)

    What's foci?

    • @ThomasStevensontutor
      @ThomasStevensontutor  4 роки тому +1

      It's the plural of 'focus'; the two points inside an ellipse that determine the shape of that ellipse. You can learn more on this website: www.mathopenref.com/ellipsefoci.html
