Pouring Molten Aluminium into Water - Slow Motion

  • This video is filmed on an expensive Sony Cinematography camera at 100fps. My cousin was able to rent it for the day from university. The rest of the video was filmed on my normal camera. In this video I pour some aluminium into water and find that it creates some interesting shapes. I cut them in half to see whats inside. I also pour some copper into water to see if it gives similar results but it didn't create anything interesting so I just re-melted the copper.

Some of you are getting worried by the odd uploads recently.
Don't worry these videos are videos that I had to make anyway for my a-level art project and I uploaded them here hoping someone might find it interesting.
I've got a massive 12mm thick knife coming soon that should hopefully be more interesting.

TAOW watched someone pay 45 quid for one of those bits of copper strung onto a cheap silver necklace wire.
You ought to start selling them

I have scars across my forehead in my hairline from molten aluminum being poured into a cold pour off box when I worked in a foundry. Molten aluminum and water are two things I would NEVER suggest someone put together. All it takes is the smallest bit of water to become encapsulated in the aluminum and become super heated. I'm not talking out my ass, I have experienced blows, the only difference was I was wearing heavy work gear designed for the job, along with a helmet and visor. The blast blew the visor off and scarred me.
For the love of God, don't encourage this kind of behavior.

yeah molten metal and water definetely dont mix molten metal can sink to the bottom of the container where a small water gets trapped by the still molten metal and the container you can get a very violent steam explosion especially with aluminum because not only does the molten aluminum explosively vaporize the water since aluminum is so reactive in it's molten state the aluminum aerosol from the steam explosion can react with the steam created from the first steam explosion in a redux reaction releasing lots of hydrogen and a lot of energy from the oxidation of alumium in a very short time with the force of the blast usually causing damage. luckily i have never heard about the secondary aluminum explosion happening in a home foundry but steam pops can definetely happen with small amounts of water. steam pops are alot less damaging than the secondary explosion that can happen in factories but it can still throw molten aluminum in your direction so safety gear is very important. pouring molten metal into a tall large tank of water is a lot less risky than pouring it into a small container of water where steam can become trapped (thats how lead shot is made) however i dont reccomend anyone pours molten metal into water because molten aluminum explosions are not a predictable event and just because it doesnt explode or pop the first time doesnt mean it wont in the future.

I knew an former employee of Alcoa and he also cautioned against water/aluminum explosions. He said they had an experimental program looking into those kinds of explosions and they couldn't determine the cause of the violence of them in some cases. It was more than could be explained by steam expansion.

yeah alcoa did a lot of testing on molten aluminum and found that when they applied a blasting cap to molten aluminum and water if the molten aluminum was poured very close to the surface of the water it exploded. molten aluminum explosions with water are actually very similar to sodium metal explosions in water both are redux reactions releasing oxides or hydroxides and hydrogen gas. aluminum contains a lot of potential energy because aluminum is split from bauxite (which is mostly aluminum hydroxide) with electrolysis when aluminum recombines with water this energy is released very quickly

I don't know the science behind it, all I know is that when it happens you'll wish you were anywhere else but there, even if it's just a steam "pop", things go quickly.

    • @funny1048youtube
      @funny1048youtube 6 років тому +1

yeah i agree even a steam pop can be extremely dangerous and it only take one drop of water in your ingot mold to instantly throw molten aluminum many feet . ingot molds always should always be preheated with the furnace even condensation can cause steam pops

You might find it interesting that musket balls used to be made in large quantities by dripping molten lead into water. Several tall towers were built for the purpose and some still remain: lh6.ggpht.com/-soPrB5t00mM/VQxPi0Lq_UI/AAAAAAABAd0/HQ0_IwiMcCI/clifton-hill-shot-tower-1%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800

Can't believe you used a plastic jug! I guess you won't do that again! :-) Very interesting results, you might want to try a taller water vessel to see if longer cooling has any effect on the end result, especially with the copper. Well done!

Don't try this at home kids. This is extremely dangerous. I don't want to be inflammatory but the truth is this person is lucky to be alive. Just google Aluminum water foundry explosions to see what can happen. I was actually searching for videos of that when I ended up here. I was looking for more information on what causes those explosions. I'm glad that it didn't happen here.

Here's another thought that you might consider... If you can get hold of this camera again have a try at filming your bow strings as they are fired. I would expect them to vibrate quite a bit before they come to rest but normally the motion is unseen. A fast camera could catch it.
    Just an idea. Best wishes.

I haven’t read the negative comments and refuse to do so. As I watched I thought to myself, “He is finding an art form here.” This seems to be a direct offshoot of your interest in the wave form patterns found in your other work. I think it is wonderful and imagine utilizing different techniques as you pour, using ice, and etc, you could have even more interesting results. Really wonderful video. Thanks so much for sharing. Inspiring.
