- I couldn't find a video on how to replace these grips when they are different (2 part vs. 1 part grip) so I made one, not professional, but does the trick for someone not knowing how to approach this subject. Link to River Junction Trading - www.riverjuncti...
Fantastic! Really helpful, getting ready to convert mine! Thanks
Very helpful video, I'm going to try to do it your way with some grips I have!
Hey, how did it go?
Well...I haven't done it yet. Everytime I go out to the shop I think about fitting them, but they are sized for a 1860 army, and I want to put them on a 1851 navy. I could put them on it, but I need to get a new grip frame so they'll fit. Thanks for the reminder, It'll make me get on it.
Do you remember the color and finish you chose for those grips.
Do you know where I can just find a spacer for a set of grips I got a pair of colts that I really like but need a spacer I can make one but not sure what its made out of..would rather buy one
Maybe try this ebay vendor: www.ebay.com/usr/arizonacustomgrips?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
Here is the link to the company that I have bought grips from, probably the best I have found as far as being exact of very close to an exact match and thus require none, or very little work on the metal backstrap or the grips themselves...

Very Nice
I hope their SAA grips fit uniformly slightly oversized on an SAA. If they don't that would require return. Grinding on the grip frame? Heavens no!
Most of the time what you’re talking about is out of frame.
Would have been better if it wasn't upside down.
Heu partner try assembling grips tightly and mark high with sharp stylus, disassemble frame and carefully sand to lines and the fit will be much better!!
Glue usually won't stick to wax paper from the kitchen....
Sorry to tell you this but the new grips you're putting on look like poop smears. Otherwise good video.
Looks like they want 75 dollars and you still have to carve them to fit?, seems a bit much. I'll just keep an eye out for a roadkill deer and make mine from that.
Well, that would be quite expensive... If you value your time :)
Would a spring clamp work instead of rubber bands?
😜
That would have been nice. Much easier.
Very strong tho could snap the grips.
Pietta has a different shape to the grip frame than the old colt design. Uberti is a lot closer to true.
Too much out of view,, terrible video
Great video. Although, I just fitted part to the gun and glued grip parts together before assembling the gun. Much easier, and no hassle with glue and rubber bands. Thank you for the tutorial anyways...
Excellent how-to Video
I have this gun, but the grips seem small. Is it possible to fit Pieta's Walker grips to this frame?
Not sure if you’re still needing an answer a year later but the grips on an 1860 Army are larger and the front/back strap should fit on your 51 Navy. Hope this helps!
@@quiglydwnunda5886 I gave the gun to my son, but I will pass this on to him. Thanks.
Another way to make the parts non-stick for the epoxy is to wrap them in Tyvek tape, I've used it in the bottom of molds when making tabletops with epoxy filler. It is really thin and if you cut it right along edges so it doesn't double over it will cover better than vaseline. A combo of the two may be the best.
Great tutorial. Another tip: whenever I re-handle pocket knives, I take a drill bit and make some small craters on the inside of the scales. This way when you sandwich the scales to the liners you have a stronger glue job. Otherwise, when you clamp the scales to the liners you lose quite a bit of epoxy. The epoxy has someplace to go, in other words. I imagine you could do this same method to the gun grips.
you could use paste wax, (what we use epoxy bedding rifles) as release agent.. it drys a bit & removal is still easy
This is how I did mine. Turned out well. Good stuff.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Great view of your mat - the job in hand ... not so much.
