- One thing I look forward to when heading up to my mate Darren's for a catch up fish is live-baiting for "Big Reds"
Just like last year Darren and I had a great day on the water live-baiting for Big Reds, I was there pretty much this time last year with similar results. Being a week or two earlier this time I'm unsure if it mad the difference, or could be tides or moon faze maybe but we didn't get onto them as much as last time. This time I found the fish a bit bigger though and to catch a couple Johny's and Kings this time it didn't really matter.
We headed off at first light to fill up the live-bait tank and decided to do a little bit of softbaiting along the way, because we don't like taking to much of the big stuff softbaiting along one of the small islands gave us a couple nice eaters to take home for the day. After about an hour we headed off to try our luck live-baiting for a couple of the big boys - we had to shift around a bit through out the morning but spot X number 3 gave us some good string pullers...
Being in shallow water and taking the time to raise them they seem none the wiser once let go, it is great catching a couple nice fish but to hold for a quick pic and release to watch it power away is very hard to explain.
After catching 2-3 big bad Reds we moved on to try and catch a couple more eaters and if we were lucky maybe a Johny or two, Darren was keen for a King as well as he always rants about his King fish chowder....
We called it quits early arvo as we had a few nice fish in the bin including a Johny and King, it was another epic catch up fish with Darren.
I can't wait to head back up and next time I might even take the snork gear and the gun

Hey what ramp is that and how do you access it? Cheers
spot x lol. Where the other 100 boats are at spawning time. what was it like back at the ramp at low?
Hahahaha yea - the ramp was fine but can't remember what the tide was - it was low but unsure if dead low - the boat has quite a flat hull as well...
Nice semi secret ramp too.
Yes great having those secret little ramps ;-)
@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing no longer secret; Works start next month to make public with 20 car parks
@@keriboi oh bugger - I gues once a few boats use these places they decided to make it more user friendly maybe? Havent been up there for a year now...
What rig and technique are you using when fishing the live baits?
I use a couple different ways but the main way is a 1/2oz ball sinker that runs straight to the hook, starting at the tail I go right through then just below mid top fin right through then push the hook through behind the wing and beak just back out front of wing - pull tight - half hitch around tail and sinker together. Now instead of finishing in wing I bypass it and go through the nose so hook is exposed out of nose. If you just go through so not to injure it to much it keeps kicking away for quite awhile.... ua-cam.com/video/LZHPlUoUvPs/v-deo.html Another way I use is a 1-2oz straight to hook - the hook straight into the nose.
