I was there that day, what an amazing race! Emmo is one of my all-time favorites, he was a blistered tire (1990) and a boneheaded decision (1994) away from being a 4-time winner. Just an amazing driver.
Almost no commentary in the last 5 laps...just let the sights and sounds of the race tell the story. No blabbing at all. This telecast won the Emmy for Best Live Sports Special
Much better than how ABC handled the finish the year before. Then ABC spent the last 5-7 laps with a ~10 second cycle: 7 seconds on track then 3 seconds of split-screen on Unser's and Fittipaldi's wives, then back to the track. Someone at ABC learned something or was replaced.
Me and my pops screaming and cheering late Sunday evening here in the Netherlands. We had several neighbors come check what was going on and if we were ok 😁
The 1990 Indianapolis 500 was the USAC-Sanctioned centerpiece event of the 1990 CART PPG IndyCar World Series that was aired live, nationwide, via satellite on New Vision 9 on May 28, 1990. This was hosted by the late Harry Gasser from the New Vision 9 NewsWatch alongside the PBA on Vintage Sports panelists, the late Smokin' Joe Cantada (Lap-by-Lap) and the late Butch Maniego (Color Commentary) as commentators, with Ronnie Nathanielsz, Dodie Lacuna and Cathy Santillan as Pit Reporters
This years 500 was incredible! A shame it ended under caution. But I really feel indy is on it's way back. It will be even better when they finally bring the aero kits for the dw12 chassis
At the end, Luyendyk let Fittipaldi catch back up with him, after stretching out a huge lead on him. For a long while, I had wondered if, if Emmo hadn't had the tire problems earlier, Arie would've been able to beat him in a head to head duel. The size of Arie's lead with about 7 to go over Fittipaldi shows me, yes, he did dial it back down at the end, and absolutely was the fastest at the end, if he had needed to be.
Boy, Paul Page and Sam Posey didn't even try to hide their disdain for Bobby Unser at this point, freezing him out and essentially ignoring him and cutting him off for the entire race. It began with Unser and Posey not getting along and arguing on air numerous times over the years, and it seems Page chose to side with Posey. By 1993 Unser was out of the booth entirely and exiled to a post on turn two.
I wasn't really awed about this year's 500. 1990 still feels golden due to the attrition. The only moment I cherish from this race is TK finally won the Indy 500.
2:00:32 - The beginning of one of the best media coverages of one of the purest, best on track battles for the lead in 500 history. People have often asked me, with exasperation, what I'm looking for in modern open-wheel racing, with all my decrying of mindless monotonous clone car racing and its stupid artificial parity. This, right here is what I'm looking for.
2:19:30 - 2:21:18 = Glad Paul Page muted himself here.. the natural sound that came out of Indy during this quiet period.. Is some of the best EVER!! the crowd were going horse... and that Chevy V-10.. What a beautiful sound....
The 1990 indy 500 was the year where arie luyendyk won his 1st career CART victory and 1st of 2 Indy 500 victorys and also, the fastest Indy 500 race at an average speed just under 186 mph. Will today be the fastest Indy 500 race with less yellow flags? Will have to wait and see.
Only three cars were on the lead lap at the end of this race. That shows how fast Arie was driving. His average speed of over 185 mph was 15 miles faster than the previous record of 170 mph set by Bobby Rahal just 4 years earlier. That record would stand for 23 years.
41:25 "Let's take a ride around this magnificent circuit with Al Unser Jr." Engine noises only for 10 sec, then synth-laser-tinkle music. These broadcasts are such a mix of really well done and "what were they thinking?"
The engines sound a little different compared to the previous year ('89).....smoother. And it's what we got accustomed to until 1997, when Tony George wanted to be like NASCAR.
Well, last year's 500 wasn't. But, this year's version finally broke the record which, IMO, was the one speed record which I thought would stand forever, along with Arie's 1- and 4-lap qualifying record from 1996 and '97
I still think 1990 was a tad better than this years. I wasn't that awed by all the passing in this year's Indy 500. And the race ended under caution. It would be some time till the current Indycar can get back up to speeds of 230-240MPH done safely. That's just my opinion Ron W. ;)
2:12:35 = I have got to think that Emerson Fittipaldi, during these last 20 laps, was secretly rooting for Arie Luyendyx to win.. I can only imagine what Emo said to Arie in Victory Lane after the race.
Come on guys! 2013 was 10 times better than 1990.I was at both races. There was no passing at all in 1990 at the front.Had Emmo's tired not blistered he would have ran away with it.This year there were 65 lead changes! I usually respect difference of opinion but there is some seriously clouded memories and judgement here!
2:01:03 - 2:02:53 = Was this the first time the race commentators shut up on a live broadcast and just let the natural sound of racing take over your television?
Is anyone going to this year's Indianapolis 500 & has a spare ticket I would to see these type of racing.Scott Goodyear never heard of him.Danny took hard crash on 41:05 something in the rear broke bad same thing happened to Aytron Senna 94 & Greg Moore in 99 something rear causing him to wall & fence both fatal crahes

best sounding indycars ever created, I miss the 89-92 indycars they have that distinct look and sound that modern cars have lost.
1997 is lost
I agree - Best Sound Indy Cars 1989-1992. The 1997 Indy cars sounded like lawn mowers !
@@timothycarpenter9947More like NASCAR

My first race and my first Indy. I was sitting in the NW Vista at turn 4. It blew my mind and made me an open wheel fan for life.
Man that theme music was great, I got chills remembering the excitement I had watching this with my dad.
Radio network still uses it on raceday.
Theme from delta force

He should have won in 1991 too. Also finished second in 1988.
Almost no commentary in the last 5 laps...just let the sights and sounds of the race tell the story. No blabbing at all. This telecast won the Emmy for Best Live Sports Special
doctorindy Yet they totally botched the shot of Arie crossing the finish line.

Het geluid van die motoren is geweldig. Dit missen we echt in de huidige Indy en Formule 1 auto’s
1990. My favourite Indianapolis 500 of all time apart from many others.
I really miss this engine sound
me too
Its POWER !!!
Me too ✋
Powerful Sound 👍
The great Indy Car Sound was the Turbo Chargers Baby !
Me and my pops screaming and cheering late Sunday evening here in the Netherlands.

I sure miss the sound of those cars!!

This was my first Indy 500. I've been to at least 20 races since then.
Anyway... Thank you for the upload!!!
The intro music sure gets you pumped up, for the Indy 500
Only legends that race. Good times.
THIS is how I remember The 500. Something lacking in the contemporary races. The cars and engines looked and sounded better.
This years 500 was incredible! A shame it ended under caution. But I really feel indy is on it's way back. It will be even better when they finally bring the aero kits for the dw12 chassis

I absolutely loved the fly by camera

I disagree, but i respect your opinion. Emmo was untouchable that day, he was flying.

Indy used to be a test track for pushing the boundaries of new tech, now it's just open wheel NASCAR.

Powerful Engine Sound and Soft Sound 🎶
Anyone know the name of the song used during the starting grid?
The engines sound a little different compared to the previous year ('89).....smoother. And it's what we got accustomed to until 1997, when Tony George wanted to be like NASCAR.
Looks like George Costanza made it big before Seinfeld..........
They're back as of last year. Sound a bit more like a mid-80's F1 turbo though.
@ 6:46 spin and win (aka incredible driving) from danny
Was a great race !
No way those tires on Emerson's right rear were exactly the same..blistering out of nowhere and a air pocket
surprisingly enough, it's the theme from the very first Delta Force movie.
Anyone know the name of the starting grid music?
No, I believe The Delta Force was the opening theme, not the starting grid theme. Unless its another piece from that film?
As of 2013, the 1990 Indianapolis 500 is no longer "The Fastest 500". It's moved to second fastest.
This year's Indy 500 average speed is 187.433mph.
2:04:26 - 2:04:28 = that pass for the lead was as smooth as a baby's
bottom.. good job Arie Luyendyk...

Brother, you said it.
41:29 - 42:14 = I am still baffled by this... why do it for just 1 lap?
They'd done similar things in the year or 2 before. This time someone thought that the synth sounds added... well, I don't know what they added.
name of the grid song?
Diego Ospina ; Reminds me of Captain Plant ending song.
Flying Dutchman wins, an exciting race
