    I am glad you had nothing to do and did this video. No music, no showing off No glamour. Just the facts sir. To say it is educational and unbiased is an understatement. I saved it to consult it as I go along in developing my own system. I am shooting for a R6 MK II though. Oh! and you did get a like from me. Thank You.

    No question... just greetings from Ontario, Canada. My dog broke my old Rebel T5 DSLR. Just ordered an R6 and adapter and hope it works well with my Sigma 150-600. I am really enjoying your videos which I just discovered. Very helpful. Thanks for making them.

    great video! ive been wanting to jump up the the EOS R6 from my EOS 6D but I was weary about using all my EF lenses, I spoke to Canon through their live chat and they told me about their mount adapter, and that's how I found your video! this is going to work great!

    I use the Canon R5 with both the standard adapter without control ring but also the adapter with drop-in CPF. To make it short, you don't feel anything that you use an EF lens on an RF Mount camera. I am into Wildlife and I use on my R5 adapted Canon 600mm 4.0 III and Canon 400mm 2.8 III lenses. And this with great, great success. Autofocus performs greatly, no impact in sharpness or whatever. The great performance of adapted lenses on the R5 makes me not buying any RF glass yet :)

      Thanks for watching and your comment. Interesting to hear how other people are getting on with adapted lenses (particularly the long telephoto glass) - yes it’s impressive how good a combination the latest cameras are with EF lenses. 😀

    I know a lot of people are moving over to the Canon R5, R6, R and RP from existing Canon DSLRs, so wanted to do a video on the available adapters. Let me know if you have any questions on anything relating to EF to RF adapters. Thanks for watching!

      Hi, I do have a question. Everyone is asking about focus speed but my concerne is more about TStop, if the light transmission has some loss with the adaptor. Also if the ultra wide angle lenses 12mm or even 16mm get loss of sharpness in the corners (happens on all Metabones and other adaptors for EF lenses to Sony mounts, including sigma mc11 and latest metabone). Thank you for the video!

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and the questions. Just so I’m clear on what you are asking, do you mean adapting Canon EF lenses or third party lenses like Sigma/Tamron?

    • @cdave2006
      @cdave2006 4 роки тому

      @@cameracravings3216 adapting canon EF lenses. But if there are issues with ultra wide angle or Tstop loss with Canon EF adapted, those issues will show up on third party lenses too for sure. When I add a macro tube to my lenses I undoubtly lose light, so I guess we do lose some amount of light. I just hope the amount is so minute that we can't even measure a Stop difference. But I can't find the answer anywhere.

    Appreciate this review as such a return to Canon from Sony with all my existing EF lenses work 'okay'ish' on the Sony but would prefer the native experience and all the features which aren't all available cross-platform, so reassuring to hear this.
    One extra comment which I'm not sure gets made much is that as tempting as some of the new RF lenses are to replace our older EF lenses, I do wonder about the future limitation of being able to adapt RF lenses to anything other than Canon R bodies, whereas despite some limitations, the EF range can be adapted to many mirrorless option... just a thought!
    If anyone from Canon is watching I'd go as far as to suggest that ALL new RF lenses should stay in EF mount but just seamless in action with an adapter... altho they'd NEVER do it I know :)

    I think the R system focuses ef lenses quicker than on a DSLR, I noticed a distinct difference myself on the R. I did a video the other day about drop in filters that are better than the canon drop in filters. the company has designed 27 drop in filters for the EF lenses to work with the canon R drop in filter adapter, worth a view if you have time.

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah I think in some cases you are right about the focusing, partly depends on which dslr but I’m amazed at how well the R5 and adapter works with ef lenses I’ve tested. Will check that drop in filter vid out 👍

    The R6 looks a awesome camera. Someone downloaded the Jarid Polen images and went through them, the R5 did get the most images in focus but he found the next camera was the Z7 (about 10% less) and then surprisingly the Sony.
    The thing that is interesting is that the Z6 is generally regarded to have slightly better AF than the Z7. The results from the new Canons look really impressive tho, Im hoping the twin processor Z6S will get a bump in AF speed and accuracy and finally get parity with Canon and Sony.
    Thanks for the heads-up on the ND adapter and it's usefulness.

    OK, my last comment I need another camera so I'm sold on the R5 after doing a lot of homework. But I plan on renting one by October for 7 days cause I would do a high school reunion photoshoot and football games. Good time to test it out for 7 days. Best Buy is giving me 24 months interest free financing on the camera so I'm set on testing it and making my decision.

  • @KaiTiura
    @KaiTiura 4 роки тому +1

    Hey, I got quoted! Cool. That comment was actually that it slowed down a little (or seemed to) on the Sigma 14-24 Art vs the Canon lenses, but not vs my DSLR (I have a 70D, and it's not really comparable, and I haven't tried the EOS R yet), but it's almost imperceptable in most cases. I must say that my judgement is based on videos I've seen as I don't own any RF lenses to compare without the adapter. Regardless, it is very fast in any case!
    Also, none of the lenses I own currently can use the 12 shots per second feature as far as I can tell. Not sure why the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM II won't work, but it doesn't seem to and isn't in the list you provided.

    • @grahamblack7689
      @grahamblack7689 4 роки тому +1

      I just left a very similar comment. I have the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and would hope it would reach 12 shots. Not sure how many organs I would have to sell to try and get the R5 and an updated 70-200mm lens

    • @KaiTiura
      @KaiTiura 4 роки тому +1

      Graham Black I hear ya! I looked at B&H's site to see what I could get for my 70-200 and they don't even give an option??? It's a great lens, and I'd consider taking a spanking on a trade if it wasn't too bad, but not an option? Seems kinda weird. I've got so much money in gear already, not being a pro, that I have to rein it in a bit on spending, especially considering that I might have to get a Ninja V for external recording... Ugh!🤬

    • @KaiTiura
      @KaiTiura 4 роки тому +1

      Graham Black PLUS... I'd really like to get an RF lens, so I can take advantage of the high speed continuous shooting. That's gonna hurt!🤣 Currently I get 2-3 shots per second.

    • @cameracravings3216

      I’m not sure about that lens. What camera are you putting it on? I know Tamron has issued a notice about compatibility issues on the R5 and R6 whereby error messages come up. Link to the tamron page below.
      www.tamron.com/news/press_release/20201127.html#
      If it works without errors I’d say it’s a pretty good lens and obviously a big saving. Only other thing is that you need an adapter to mount filters on the front of it I believe. If you can afford the Canon RF15-35 it is excellent.

      Yeah generally they aren’t shipping with the adapters. I have seen a few companies offering deals with free adapters with R5 or R6, but suddenly in last week or so the adapters seem to be sold out everywhere and those deals seem to have disappeared. Yes the cheapest adapter (without the control ring) is £99, so yes I’d allow for that when you are costing up total you will need to spend.

      Hi, no the adapters only way 130g Max so shouldn’t really effect the gimbal, so long as you aren’t at the max pay load weight of the RSC2 (3kg or 6.6lbs). May need to shift the camera back slightly to balance correctly, but I think the RSC2 has pretty good clearance at the rear. Depends on what camera and lens combo, but for example an R5 with ef 16-35mm 2.8 lens and adapter would weigh approx 1.6kg.

      @@potatoman5285 I’ve not yet fully tested the R6, but based on my use of the R5 over the last 5 months and the features that the two cameras share - I’d personally go with the R6 for the autofocus system with face and eye tracking for both people and animals, 20fps drive speed, great low light, stabilisation and fully articulating screen. Or if you can save up for the R5 do that. I’ve been shooting on mirrorless cameras for over 5 years now and I just think the benefits outweigh any drawbacks particularly for shooting events. Also it’s pretty clear Canon is going all in on the RF lineup, so not much value in buying a Canon dslr now IMHO. If I were you I’d try to hire an R6 with adapter and try it out for a weekend. Also if you can I’d wait because Canon will likely release more RF cameras this year like the R1/R7 which may bring the price of both the R6 and R5 down.

    How was camera when photographing sports? How would tracking and AF stack up to X mk III?

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 роки тому

      Hi, it was fast and pretty accurate. Did struggle a couple of times on mountain biking shoot, but to be fair I’d only had it a couple of days then and hadn’t dialled in the af tracking sensitivity properly so probably more my issue than the camera. I haven’t had a chance to do a direct comparison with the 1dxiii, so hard to say but I think overall it compares well. R5 is not a dedicated sports camera, but I think you’ve got most of the speed of the 1dxiii with the extra flexibility of the 45mp sensor. I am hoping to hire a 1dxiii to do a side by side soon as a few people have asked me this. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀

      A7iii is a great hybrid camera which I’ve both hired and subsequently owned and used for professional work (stills and video) - main drawbacks of that are 8bit video and no 4K slowmo but it really depends what you are going to be mainly using it for and if you already have any lenses either E-mount, or EF or RF. I’ve not used the R6 yet, but looks great as a stills camera and decent video specs, apart from the overheating issues. Hoping to get hold of one to test soon. Let me know what your planning to use it for and I may be able to offer more advice?

      Ah cool, yeah it’s tough I do think the A7iii is great value for money now and It’s always been a reliable tool for work. I think the video image coming out the R6 is going to be nicer but it’s weather you can rely on it and yes shooting to 2 cards for both stills and video on the Sony is a big plus. The Ibis on the R5 is excellent, so if it’s the same on the R6, that’s something to consider, as is the touch interface and control system which I have to say is better on the new Canon’s than the current Sony’s (A7SIII aside). Main thing is to work out what you need in terms of camera and lenses etc and do some costs, I suspect you will find currently the SonyA7iii plus some lenses will come in a fair bit cheaper than Canon - RF lenses are pretty steep and there’s not as much third party options yet like there is for Sony system. Hope you enjoy using what ever you end up with 😀

Main benefits I’ve found are that non IS lenses become stabilised on the R5 and R6 and the af performance is also improved including the eye and face af tracking for humans and animals. So yes adapted ef lens can be better on the EOS r cameras.

      Hi Allan, thanks for watching and the question. Canon brought out the RF to EF mount adaptors alongside the EOS R camera that was released in October 2018 but also in preparation for the RP, R5 and R6 releases. The RF mount is what canon is using for their full frame mirrorless cameras (and some of their cine cams) now moving forward, so the adaptors allow users to adapt their existing ef lenses be that Canon or third party. What Tamron lenses to you have?

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  3 роки тому

      I haven’t seen any focus shift on the ef lenses I have tested with the adapters and I haven’t seen anyone else saying there is any focus shift.
      My understanding is that Canon has specifically developed these adaptors to ensure the exact flange distances to mean that there is no downside of using ef on the rf mount and in many cases the lenses actually focus faster and more accurately. I’ve not tested that many lenses yet, but apparently all Canon EF and EF-S lenses made since 1987 should work, with 100% performance with all features on all lenses, on the EOS-R system.
      The EOS-R cameras also defaults to correcting lens aberations automatically with most EF lenses and you can adjust corrections in the camera menus too.

    Thanks for the quality report.
    I have a question for Canon full frame mirrorless cameras. The adapter for EF lenses physically represents the same ring as for macro photography, which should zoom in on the image, i.e. change focal length. Plus, the EF's flange(the segment between the matrix and the objective lens) is longer by definition than the RF's. What will we eventually see on the matrix? In my opinion, the image on the matrix should be enlarged due to the camera-adapter-EF lens system. The question is how much to change?
    Thank you.

      Hi, nice to here you are getting back into the hobby. Just to clarify (as Canon has a confusing naming system) When you say EOS 500 do you mean a 500D? Also what lenses have you bought with it? And when you say EOS 5 R body do you mean an R5 mirrorless camera or the older 5DSR DSLR (I’m assuming you mean R5 but I don’t think you can get them used for much less than 3 grand currently). In answer to your question about EF-S lenses, these are lenses specifically designed for crop sensor aps-c cameras like the EOS 500d. You can use them on full frame cameras but with a crop factor of x1.6 in the case of Canon. Let me know the model of lenses you’ve got. Sorry hope my reply isn’t too confusing.

      Ah ok that all makes more sense now 😀 yes my video was talking specifically about the adapter to use for adapting EF lenses to the new Canon RF mirrorless mount - With regards the 5DS R which is a DSLR rather than mirrorless - If the lenses are EF mount you may not need an adapter. You might need a different adapter (like one from fotodiox) if they are older FD mount and again wouldn’t get autofocus or electronic interactions between the camera and lens. That price seems pretty good for that camera too.

      The EF lenses on the adapter produce sharper images on EOS R series of cameras (RP, R, R5, R6) than they do on DSLRs. I have several EF lenses and also own 5D mk3 and canon EOS R. I did extensive testing and came to a conclusion that anybody who is already invested in canon EF lenses should keep them for future use on EOS R series of cameras. Canon EF to EOS R adapters are the so far. I have used MC-11, Metabones, Commlite, Vello, etc, but none of them compares to Canon EOS R adapters in terms of usability and image quality.
      I also did testing to compare my EF 24-105mm f4L with RF 24-105mm f4.0L and didn't see any significant sharpness difference. I'm using my EF 24-105mm mostly on panasonic G9/GH5, otherwise, I will return the RF 24-105mm f4.0L which I recentlypurchased. .

      No worries, yeah I’d try the firmware first then see if that sorts it but I wouldn’t think it would be that as I’ve used the adapters on old and new firmware and they worked fine. Worth a try first before swapping the adapter though. Hope you get it sorted, always frustrating when things don’t just work as they should!

    Very nice review. You actually answered all my questions. I knew photo auto focus will be ok, I was wondering about video af.
    I still have 6D and buying R6 is kind of logical step on (not there yet). Sensor size and pix numbers are the same, but quite few jams are really inviting for me. IS for 24-70 2.8 for example, good video focus on EF lenses, excellent eye focus for photo and more. Perhaps a bit on a downside is lack of top screen (I use that a lot, actually most of the time) and electronic viewfinder that comes with mirrorless system (just another monitor we are watching through our day).

    Appreciate the video, I'm in the same boat. I have a bunch of L glass from my DSLR days, but shoot Sony E-Mount. Have debated whether to sell my Canon glass and go all Sony or get an R5 and use one these adapters to continue using those lenses. I have the Sigma adapter for the Canon lenses on my Sony bodies and it's ok, works well with non-moving subjects but faster moving stuff is more 50/50. So I'm debating whether to go back to Canon or just go Sony. I don't want to develop two systems.

I’ve seen a lot of comments on videos about the R5 and A7siii with people claiming one brand is better than another, but to be honest I think it’s up to the individual to decide what serves them best for their needs.

      I will say that using my 24-70 2.8L mkii was very fast and responsive with the adapter (when shooting fast moving mountain biking and football) - much better than I’ve ever had with the Sony’s.

      @@cameracravings3216 really appreciate your replies! Very helpful! I know there are folks that like to be in one 'camp' or the other and then bash the brand they're not using. I don't care really. I use what I have in hand. I've gotten used to Sony files, and for years was a 5D (several generations) shooter. I hate the idea of losing a bunch of money in selling my L glass and rebuying all new lenses. I'm more of stills shooter, and starting to dabble in video. So for me it's more R5 vs Sony A7rIV. I have the Sony A7III and II. Would like a bump in resolution.

    nice video. I got the control ring canon and the viltrox for my R5. This way I had some to compare to on day 1. Well, my R5 did not work at all with the viltrox. More importantly, however, is that it was a loose connection compared to the canon. I mean it has extra play that the canon did not have. That was too much for me so I sent it back.

      Anthony Martin - thanks that’s great insight, and slightly concerning re the play on the mount! Yes as I think I said in the video I’d usually go with the own brand adapters usually much more reliable. Remember once I tried a comlite or something similar on my Sony in the early days and it almost killed the camera! Never again 🤣

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 роки тому +1

      Don’t think that’s possible? Will double check but my understanding is the R5 recognises that an ef-s lens has been put on, so automatically crops to avoid you seeing a big black circle round the edge.

    • @neiltodankar8034
      @neiltodankar8034 4 роки тому +1

      If you hold Crop lenses near Full frame lenses, the glass on the camera end of it is much larger (on the FF lenses).
      That in turn is to do with how much the sensor reads through the lens. Usually, the smaller the glass is toward the camera end of it, the smaller the sensor size.
      I have an EOS R myself and cannot switch it off or go to full frame while using an EF-S lens.
      In my opinion, it defaults going to the crop mode because of it's physical limitation.

Probably best to contact either Canon or the retailer you purchased from and get it sorted under warranty. Hope you get it fixed.

    Does the canon lens mount adapter affect af accuracy and also af speed

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 роки тому

      Hi James, no not that I’ve noticed in everyday use. I’ve obviously not tested every lens but on the ef lenses I have tested its been excellent and as good or better than those lenses would be on say a 5div, eye/object tracking is excellent too. Ultimately some lenses focus faster and more accurately than others no matter which camera they are on. The RF lenses I’ve used have generally been a little more snappy to focus but I think that’s just the latest af motors in them and the other thing I’ve noticed is that the RF native lenses generally focused down to more of a -ev than ef adapted lenses. But overall it’s a great experience using ef glass on the R5.

      I believe the other 4 pins are the data connections for the RF control ring which is programmable. The basic lens communications flow through the other 8 pins. That would be my best guess at it. The RF lenses have that programmable adjustment ring and that’s the only difference between the RF & EF/EF-S lenses. I just ordered an R6 MKII with an ND adapter ring for my EF, EF-S lenses. I’ll order the RF 50mm STM prime Friday as my first RF lens. If I figure more out, I’ll let you know.
