At Aviation Festival Americas, Simon Gandy, EVP & COO, The New Terminal One (NTO) at JFK joined for a 5-minute conversation, sharing his insights into the state-of-the-art terminal.
The NTO, a 23-gate terminal dedicated to international travel, aspires to set a new benchmark for world-class design and service, reimagining passenger experience with the hope of becoming one of the top five airport terminals in the world.
At 2.4 million ft2 in size with areas as tall as 85ft, Gandy described the new terminal as a "cathedral like" building filled with local artists' work, specifically designed to inspire an instant connection to New York. In addition to creating an impactful facility, Gandy shared how the terminal will draw on lessons from existing airport infrastructure, leveraging technology and human touch to curate an elevated passenger experience.
Noting one of the project's mandates, "making every experience an extraordinary moment to remember," Gandy unpacked how advanced technology and automation will be coupled with human touch to cater to desires across the board. However, he also acknowledged the challenges of ensuring technologies integrated today remain relevant to the demands of the future given the entire project will not complete until 2030, with the first phase opening in June 2026.
